Office Hours: Summer vacation? Really?

Your plan?
191

This past Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer. Yikes!

This will be our third pandemic summer, and while COVID-19 is better contained than at earlier points, the U.S. is still suffering over 2,000 deaths per week.

Travel plans have been made more expensive by spiking gas prices, which hit fresh records this past weekend. Yet despite the soaring cost, about 35 million people took to the roads, according to the AAA — a 5 percent increase over last year’s Memorial weekend.

As if these weren’t enough to dent your plans, the climate crisis has increased the odds that this summer will be dangerously hot. The previous weekend, much of the east coast experienced record-breaking high temperatures, with the National Weather Service warning people in affected areas to avoid going outside.

So this week’s Office Hours questions: How have these multiple current crises impacted your summer plans? What are enjoyable things to do in the summer that don't involve travel, close-proximity with other people, or going outside?

Please comment below. I’ll join in, too.
