A woman in a hot-air balloon is lost, so she shouts to a man below, "Excuse me. I promised a friend I would meet him, but I don't know where I am."

"You're at 31 degrees, 14.57 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude," he replies.

"You must be a Democrat."

"I am. How did you know?"

"Because everything you told me is technically correct, but the information is useless, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've been no help."

"You must be a Republican."

"Yes. How did you know?"

"You've risen to where you are due to a lot of hot air, you made a promise you couldn't keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's my fault."

And arrivals should hug victims and ask them if they want to die... and ask to donate.

This tie-in between the political wing and the judicial wing of government has convinced many Americans that all justice is political. As the Bible tells us, the crowd at the trial of Jesus chanted to free from prison, “Not this man (Jesus) but Barabbas (a felon).”

Barabbas was a high-ranking insurgent against the Roman occupation, a result of chasing Hannibal around the Mediterranean after the fall of Carthage, when Israel was occupied - and sacked - in the process. It is how the Romans created the Mediterranean empire - moving into an area claiming to be after Hannibal and then staying there. (Presumably, to protect the inhabitants from Hannibal!)

Jeshua - Jesus - was a popular rabbi, a holy man - a heretic from the Sanhedrin POV.

The insurgent fought the Romans.

Jeshua preached to love the enemy - a.k.a, the Romans.

The Romans executed Jeshua after the population chose Barabbas - clearly, to continue fighting the Romans - and then eventually evolved a Roman church, imbued - by the way - with many Roman values. Of course, the Jews then became the traditional enemy! Let that all sink in.

As an arguably parallel scenario, say you're a Gaza Palestinian given the same kind of choice by an Israeli governor. Which would you choose? The heretic or the "terrorist?"

Let me hasten to add:

Don't get me wrong about all that. History renders the Levant an imponderable, about which I have not a single clue on how to ameliorate such historic animosity, and I think the outcome will be bloody and bleak for all participants, as well as anyone anywhere near it all.

Expand full comment

Yes, you’re right: there’s no separating justice from politics, from military action, from the values of a population, from history. We live in a complex world.

Expand full comment

No! Hillary and Joe are above the law. Joe was not pursed for illegal possession of documents. and Hillary wiped here server while its contents were under subpeona—no action! Then she did what Trump did: misclassified her Steele dossier document financing, registering it as a legal expense. She was fined $8,000 Trump got a felony charge - and eventually a conviction! So yeah! Let's talk about who is above the law... good topic And who gets to say how people get charged under the law too! .

Anyone who has handled classified documents quickly understands the Mickey Mouse nature of the Classified Mentality. Very insignificant factoids are classified; I know this by experience but can’t give you examples because I’d be subject to jail time. But there’s a difference between admitting that you inadvertently included in your library some classified docs versus lying about how you handed them over to the authorities as Drumpf did. The transgressions of Hillary and Biden are kindergarten offenses versus the intentional crimes of traitor Drumpf.

Hopefully not just a bit off topic: In the early 1950s, members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade —2,800 men and women who fought in Spain 1936-38 against the military uprising of Franco, Hitler, and Mussolini against a democratically elected government — were investigated by the secret police force (FBI) of J. Edgar Hoover as “premature anti-fascists.” Many of those volunteers lost their jobs because of the pressure exerted by the secret police. I’m expecting that we can look forward to a similar political cleansing as Drumpf and his minions take the reins of power. God help America.

Went to school with a guy who’s father was part of the Abraham Lincoln gauge in Spain he got called in front of Congress, the McCarthy hearing. Not at all. I didn't know that particular little part of history. And I agree that Mango Mussolini will try to do the same.

Expand full comment

The original Mussolini supported the Finns in 1939-1940, on the side of the angels actually.

Expand full comment

Here’s some more history. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade WERE actually Communists, and shortly after Franco (relatively) liberated Madrid they absolutely disgraced themselves.

How many of you are aware of the OTHER 1930’s International Brigade?

The Soviet attack on Finland in late 1939 also inspired an International Brigade, with volunteers from all over Europe. Most of the world condemned the Soviets, with one interesting exception: Nazi Germany (Nazi diplomats were instructed to stress the Soviet point of view), the Nazi-Soviet pact being in full swing at the time. The Soviets even combined the playbooks from the Nazi assaults on Poland and Norway into one: Mainila (Gleiwitz) and Quisling (Kuusinen).

The Abraham Lincoln brigade, back in the US, joined in the Soviet-directed Communist campaign “not one dime for Mannerheim” against the Finns.

During the Nazi-Soviet pact the two sides acted as fairly close allies until their Al Capone/Bugs Moran-style fallout in June 1941.

The Soviets continued to run a massive campaign of subversion and espionage against Western countries throughout the war, in fact, June 21, 1941, saw the expulsion of at least one Soviet diplomat from the U.S.

Western Communists were working on the side of the Nazis during the Nazi Soviet Pact. They and their spiritual descendants deserve as little consideration as actual Nazis (plenty more).

McCarthy was right. He could have strangled the deep state in its playpen, with proper support.

Expand full comment

Some of the Lincolns were indeed members of the communist party in the USA; others were militant trade-unionists; still others were adventurers. The International Brigades, which consisted of volunteers from at least 50 countries, was a complex army. Yes, there was something called the Comintern, which was run by Stalin, and attempted to spread Soviet-style communism across the globe. But put yourself in the position of the leaders of the legitimately elected government of Spain: when the rebel general Franco, aided by Hitler and Mussolini, staged a bloody coup that lasted for three years and killed 500K people, the only big ally that Spain could find was the USSR, which Spain paid for weapons (Mexico supplied some weapons, too.) No Western democracy stepped forward to help the Republic. Indeed, Roosevelt allowed Texaco to sell oil to Franco on credit. The Republican government was progressive: their 1931 constitution granted rights to women, instituted land reform, and built thousands of public schools. Thanks to help from Hitler and Mussolini, the fascist Franco won the war, and took Spain back to the Middle Ages with the church, aristocracy, and military in charge. All of the American Lincoln volunteers have passed away. Their legacy is located at alba-VALB.org.

You, Shirer and "our" constitutionalists understand fascism and heartless Strongmen. We too easily forget that authoritarians don't care about others. Tocqueville in 1845 hoped that democracy in America would continue b/c the rich would endorse welfare for those who needed help. What Tocqueville suggested that what would guide the rich was spiritual (religion). What was left out is empathy. It's still continuing; for example, the Christian Nationalists are a religion without empathy.

What we have here are cages where wolves plan to harvest us chickens* and 50% of us are not paying sufficient attention. All of us are facing wolves. (1) We must link with those who value democracy. (2) We must observe the wolves in action, and we must avoid becoming chickens. Don't forget that we're not alone and that each of us can act against wolves.

As a child psychiatrist, I understand that the ultimate solution is to raise children with empathy. This will take patience.

It's only of late that we have come to understand the importance of empathy with our children and with our fellows (including those who follow Strongmen).

nope. When his ball goes in the woods on a golf course, he just drops another one on the fairway.

Sadly, trumpy got this one partly right. If you clear the understory with low impact fires, it prevents the big ones. Native peoples knew this. So you do need rakers, but you would have to pay them. Think the orange one would do that?

Expand full comment

I'm aware that is true. I didn't know you raked after a controlled burn. I thought you just let nature take its course, because small lightning caused fires are very common in the West.

In the wet Eastern forests, Native Americans also set fires to keep open clearings in the woods, because they were more productive of berry patches, grazing for deer, and other kinds of food production.

Expand full comment

Raking is not what you do, the controlled burn takes care of things. My point was that management takes time and personnel, both of which have costs. Government slashing grifters don't like to pay anyone, so they would be worse than what we have now. Intelligent management takes skilled people, sometimes learned through cultural traditions, sometimes learned via formal or on the job education, and involves political will. You are exactly right about eastern forests, though it was not just deer. Bison and elk were here as well 250-300 years ago.
