I write this with love, but frustration, too. Whenever I read/hear any Dem parrot the words, βThis isnβt who we are,β I automatically respond, βYes, it is.β Maybe itβs because Iβve become a cynical senior or maybe itβs because I live in a staunchly Trumpian community, but I have yet to see any evidence supporting the claim that we arenβt a country filled with racist, misogynistic, homophobic America-firsters. Perhaps I need time away from the political talk, so forgive me for my anger.
I agree. But I just thought there were more of βusβ who prioritized kindness, decency, human-rights, lawful order, etc. I didnβt realize weβre the minority.
I hold a contrapositive view. The >US voters< who elected the felon are not who they believe themselves to be and cling to a religion that they believe affirms that narcissistic self-image. And they will forgive any scoundrel that reaffirms that belief. After all, under the religious ideology they embrace, "[they're] not perfect; they're just forgiven." Note, too, how the felon-elect portrayed his hate rallies as lovefests - >especially< the 1/6 insurrection! We have degenerated into a post-rational society - as a whole - that the felon elect truly represents. To my mind, that's the very definition of "decadent."
=========== An afterthought:
Listen to the words of a man with whom I share a very similar Appalachian heritage. (We even dress a lot alike, even as I'm considerably older and located well North of him. I'd be proud of him had he been my son - although I am personally without biologic issue.) He, as have I in this forum in times past, has also banged on about the heretical fundamentalist religion of the Bible Belt I consider Confederate, that has matured into a cult-like status from the times of Jerry Falderal:
That all began really settling in around the time of Ronald Mc Reagan, which is why I think of times from the '80s on until now as the "Ronald Mc Donald" era.
=========== Another afterthought concerning the international front:
What resonates with me is the part about "overplaying their hand."
=========== An unrelated afterthought, that I've banged on here several times before, that I think may be important to keep in mind in the coming years:
DZK, Let me offer that for a 'narcissistic confederate' form of 'Christofascism' to have spread its roots outward to consolidate an 'expanded confederacy' the movement would need to excise key passages selectively from the Judeo-Christian Bible. Here is one example for Leonard Leo and his filthy rich fanatics from Project 2025, from Matthew 19:24 - "It would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God". The passage from M:19:23 ... "woe be unto you...hypocrites" fits equally well. To be a good religious fanatic you would need to focus on your narcissism with a blindered eye, just like big man, if he weren't really the antichrist. I wonder whether he left those passages from Matthew in his $59 buck bible? Thanks for the references!
On a further note, I long ago satisfied myself that the reason evangelical fanatics support Israel is not for the good of Israel. While their enthusiastic support for someone you have already identified as an anti-Christ is not because they don't believe that's >exactly< the model of an anti-Christ they have in mind. It's because they believe they are the righteous, who will be subsumed into heaven in "The Rapture" discussed in Revelation. Their aim is to insure it comes to pass in their lifetimes.
During the time in the '80s evangelists were getting very loud about the era being the 4th Reawakening - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Awakening - I was working for a clown in the DC area who was one of the founders of a church in McLean, VA that emphasized Revelation, and I hold with the insights I gleaned as an outside observer, from having been in their proximity. His wife attempted suicide (and likely succeeded after I left his employ) while he seldom showed up for engagements with anyone other than his high-end mistress rather than his wife, including his motel rooms when we were on the road.
And the evangelicals believe they have the answers for ALL of us, answers they intend to impose. Their own insecurity in their "salvation" is so deep that they can't rest until they make the rest of us follow their religion. Good fucking luck with that!
That was the original "clarion call" shriek leading to the rise of "charter schools." (Tin plated faux Christian madrasa, if you ask me!) The prohibition of religious indoctrination is what they loudly harangue is behind the rise of crime. (Translate that, the rejection of their hypocritical sexual mores - sexual liberation. From my experience and perception they object to doing in the streets what they freely do in church - but are forgiven! Consider their felonious champion sex abuser they've just elected.)
Let me hasten to add that although I am >not< a Christian, being more closely allied to the nontheological Buddhist persuasion, I'd like to direct your attention to some relevant thoughts from someone who >is< an expert on the question:
Clearly he is a very decent man who understands the structure of argument and the problems with holding two inconsistent propositions in one's mind at the same time while not seeing that!
Thank you, Sec. Reich, for this insight. The day after Clinton lost Congress, I walked dejected nto my Campaigns and Election class taught by a future Advisor to Clinton and Obama. One thing that was discussed was that "the electorate is becoming ungovernable." I believe your interview on the radio at this time confirms this attitude toward government.
As I recall on that Wednesday in 1994, it seemed like the end of the World. Much to my surprise, the Professor explained results, the appeal of Newt's Contract. She stated that re-election starts the day after the election. She added that it's easy to throw bombs from the minority, but actually governing is much harder. So here we are again.
Despite the obscene amount of money dumped into a very shallow discussion pool, I believe that the media and leadership are the missing guardrails that allowed progress to be derailed. Derailing progress was easy with massive billionaire-driven and foreign-driven misinformation in this Digital Age. More on this later.
I reject the "this is who WE are" argument. Trump got 72.6 million votes, or 50.8%. Harris got 46.9 million votes, or 47.5%. The two candidates got 140.5 million votes, far less than half America. In fact, less than half Americans even voted.
Trump's 72.6 million voters is TWENTY-TWO% (22%) of 330 Million Americans. Thus, more than one-fifth and less than one-quarter of Americans elected Trump. So the "Who we are" talk goes out the window. Trump didn't even get 51% of voters with less a quarter of American votes. If half of Americans didn't vote, neither candidate and party are talking with, or speaking for, Americans.
Now then, I find it sexist to blame the outcome on a women. Harris should not be the historical Eve that caused America's downfall from Democracy. Hillary Clinton was wrongfully blamed for the Democrats fall from Grace. I really think society needs to stop blaming women. Enough!
The DNC, not "Democrats, failed miserably. Jaime Harrison failed to speak to, or care about, 82% of Americans who do not live in Swing States by the DNC abandoning Gov. Dean's 50 State Strategy. Hatrison failed to a messenger or support messengers to the all important 18.5% of Americans who live in swing states.
Harrison lost his Senate race to Lyndsey Graham, yet he was put in charge of running ALL the Democrats races. This is when the stage was set for defeat. Right here, a year ago, someone pointed out that Harrison ran a poor campaign that relied on tech. Well, if you tried to open the DNC's Reach app yesterday, you were SOL because it was crashed. This is a big story that I would like to know about, but nary a word yet. I don't think that the app would've increased Harris's turnout enough to matter, but hacking cannot be ruled out.
Under Harrison, the main organizing tool of Democrats, NGP VAN's parent company , was sold to a London based private equity firm. Look it up on Wiki. I'm not saying they ran into the ground or did anything improper. I'm just saying that the DNC is out of touch with voters and have an ineffective, failed leader. What does he care, now that his home state of SC is the 3rd Primary State which makes him like a King or Queen maker for the next Presidential Primary.
It worth noting that shortly before Biden's disastrous debate, the DNC hosted a very weak on-line training. The hosts were on for 20 minutes and didn't even take questions. However, shortly after Harris stepped up, the Reach app was rolled out. I'm not making any equations that the DNC was waiting to roll out the Reach app. You can make that decision for yourself.
It did seem strange that the DNC had so many open positions just 5 months ago. It did seem strange that Harrison stayed silent on a race issue during the SC Primary. When Harrison didn't chime in on his own state, it didn't look good for the rest of the country.
After 2016, Senator Sanders established a group to overhaul the DNC. I really don't know what they did because they didn't promote it. Most importantly, they didn't organize. I don't know if they did anything, except allow the sale of NGP VAN's paent company and get the Reach app ready to roll out.
Since it's time to point fingers, It's not fair to blame Harris. Biden had a record to run on. Walz was "America's Dad," and spoke to and for Midwesterners. Too bad the DNC allowed him to take a back seat and not be on all the Sunday talkshows and more of a spokesperson.
It was up to Party leaders to realize that the MSM was running a poll that said people didn't like the direction of the economy and thought that Trump would be better for the economy and the Border, despite being the one person who stopped the Border crisis from being fixed. When the party leaders let this false narrative ferment, it was over for Harris/Walz and many down ballot races.
Over a year ago, going back three (3) years, I stated that it was crucial for Americans to understand that Democrats' infrastructure investment ALWAYS works, and tax cuts for the rich NEVER work. In fact, tax cuts ranks almost last out of 14 ways studied to create jobs and build the economy. It's still, "it's the economy, stupid." Biden did his job, but the DNC forgot to tell people and the MSM.
President Clinton, with the help of Secretary Reich, proved that infrastructure investment creates jobs. Yet somehow, the MSM reported that voters didn't know what Harris would do. Hello? She would continue the Democrats' infrastructure investment because that's what Democrats do, including Biden/Harris who fixed Trump's economy and nailed a soft landing after the COVID shutdown. So really... did the DNC do anything to explain this and help the messengers? They built an app that mysteriously crashed all day on Election Day.
And when the Dems cannot win after Women are stripped of the human and healthy rights, creating a huge reason for women to vote, the problem is really bad. Trump's 22% decided the election. ONLY the DNC is to blame.
IMO, Bernie and Gov. Dean need to take over the DNC immediately. Elizabeth Warren should be the Spokesperson. The MSM must give both parties a chance for rebuttal on all issues facing Americans.
Great points! I struggle with βthis is who we areβ; to me it feels like this is who we are, although I donβt want to believe it. I especially struggle with the non voters. Where do they fit in? I only became a citizen in 2014, so this is my third presidential election (and I have voted in every single local, primary or special election since becoming eligible) and in all three of them the GOP candidate was Trump. And even if the Democratβs candidates werenβt my perfect or preferred choices I sure as hell wouldnβt let my vote go to waste and/or βhelpβ the other candidateβs chances of winning. I feel very frustrated and disappointed.
Gina, For what itβs worth, connecting with my local Indivisible chapter while also aware Indivisible Founder Ezra Levin will be zooming later today with some 100 grassroots organizers to launch the βresistance,β I donβt feel βweβre the minority.β I also would note in 2020 the largest bloc of eligible voters, amounting to 80 million, were non-voters. I understand in 2024 that figure is larger. My point is, however many of us there are, the opportunities significantly to expand are indisputable.
My thoughts, we have half the country with us. The smart thing to ask , imo, is what can we do to utilize this resistance contingent and grow its presence.
Sandra, Aside from Indivisible, three Substacks whose communities will be highly engaged in the resistance are Jessica Craven βChop Wood, Carry Water,β Simon Rosenberg βHopium Chronicles,β and Robert Hubbell βTodayβs Edition Newsletter.β
Rachel Maddowβs post 11/6 was directly to the point. We have our marching orders. Join something! The silver lining is the timing. Our words go out in a myriad of ways today. Our words can be building blocks as well as weapons. To change minds, we must change heartsβ¦.may it be so
I will not give him the power over me that the thousands of things he did wrong donβt matter. Because they do.
I donβt to hear about higher gas prices,or that Putin is looming over America or that Trump wants secure men β like Hitler hadβ
In my wildest dreams I never thought this deranged Unhinged demented man would win or could win
Yet, it this is what America wanted. So be it
He will not hold his power over me.
Nor will I ever accept him- no matter what and I will not accept JD Vance either/ Trumps pull toy who I suspect will be running the Republican race after Trumpβ¦
God bless us all. Gif bless Kamala Harris, who is all good
But maybe she should have gotten the
Pennsylvania over walls
Who knows what is going to happen in the next four years but I see hatred and chaos and lies in general that donβt work with him and people getting fired left and right because they are not hanging onto Trumpβs heels ugh.. I could go on, like most if you.
So me curling myself up into a fetal position is over
With you, I don't feel we are a minority either & there were many motivated voters onboard to drive up the #s. Something just isn't kosher. The narcissist needed the frosting on his cake, that "popular" vote, how he did it, we don't yet know, but that photo of him&johnson insinuating they share some secret we would find out... it's telling of something. There is a tangled web in the weeds, this has to be a faux win.
We have removed funding and the arts from education, along with teaching the trades in high schools for mechanics, plumbing or electronics, etc. As a result we don't have businesses started up in our communities that will be handed down from generations to family members. This is a result of the technology era where all had to go on to college for computers and electronics. Guess what, it didn't work then and it sure as hell isn't working now. Republicans never want to put money into education because if we are smart they would not be getting away with purging voter registries, and redistricting the maps like they just did.
I donβt think Harris/Walz lost b/c they didnβt explain economic policy. They lost b/c our country is filled with people whoβd rather put a morally corrupt, convicted felon filled with hate and obvious mental challenges back in the White House than an intelligent black woman. If you have advice on helping us move forward from this, please share, but telling me to get over it and go read a book isnβt helpful.
Perhaps the more discerning among us couldn't compete with the flood of mis-information from Fox News, Twitter, foreign trolls, etc. People in a cult don't know they're in a cult. Each of us chose based on the information we had. I don't think we've fully grasped that every lie is an attack on our freedom to self govern. Our democracy has been under attack for a long time and we haven't understood out how to defend it. Perhaps this is an opportunity to learn.
IMHO this is where Democrats made another mistake - the "basket of deplorables" mentality. Did we learn nothing from Hillary Clinton? The fact is, there are a LOT of people hurting economically. Is that Biden's fault? Of course not. Harris's mistake was in not explaining the exemplary work of Kahn, Goolsbee, and others. Instead, she waffled. And made the hurting people angry at the same time.
Go on, continue with the condescending rage of Democrat purity. Why don't you just call the Trump voters deplorable, and be done with it?
I didnβt call them anything. I pointed out what they knowingly chose. And my original comment was that I didnβt realize how many people in the US weβre willing to make that choice. Look at the numbers. Many people chose immigration as their number one reason for voting for trump. You suggest that itβs b/c they are hurting. These same people refused to research facts and were easily fooled with outrageous excuses of immigrants eating pets. I think that when we look more closely at who voted we canβt help but surmise that racism is there. Again, I think weβre on the same side, but rather than accusing me of name calling, please offer helpful advice. Iβm looking for hope and constructive ways for all of us to move forward.
Gina, when people fund and glorify a felon and rapist and foul mouthed psychopath as a world leader, I think the time for sympathies for them is misplaced. They want guns and religion and know the difference between rational and hateful. The purposely chose the hate because they canβt accept equality and equity.
I agree with you and I have no sympathies. That time passed when they chose violence repeatedly.
"I didn't call them anything'" but you implied it with every word you wrote, and still write. Look, I'm trying to be constructive here. We need a truly liberal agenda here, that neither the DNC nor Harris provided.
That said, the number #1 issue was not immigration but inflation - yes the economy once again. But because of the work of Kahn and Goolsbee, Harris was given a strong hand to play on this issue, and she played it very badly, by waffling evasiveness - almost as if she didn't understand her true strength and just wanted to slide by on joy and "not going back."
They are deplorables. Worse they are fascists, almost Nazis. Theyβre dead to me. We are trying to get the votes of ultra rightists, of fascists. The way to do that is to become those things outselves. Theyβre garbage. Flush them.
Deplorable is such a delicate word next to the perpetual vitriol coming out of the MAGA mouths. The christian nationalist right are the most foul-mouthed, sexual perverts on planet earth.
OR, the anomaly of 15 million "extra" votes were fraudulent. Which is more likely? Put your heavy bias aside and actually think about it. Go look at the totals from 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2024. Then go back and look at 2020. Use your brain.
Gina, but what does it explain? I learned that the people is always right, so the ugly quotes of Robert's show are impressing, but why is the common feeling so strong? I think the country has no tradition in social discourse and the meaning it could have for life conditions of the poorest.
Gina, but what does it explain? I learned that the people is always right, so the ugly quotes of Robert's show are impressing, but why is the common feeling so strong? I think the country has no tradition in social discourse and the meaning it could have for life conditions of the poorest.
Michael Hutchinson: I don't believe that. Voters have been purged from the rolls. "Spoiled " ballots have been discarded. This should be investigated, because it is in the thousands. Even hundreds of thousands. If these things had been done to republican leaning voters, there surely would have been investigations. Doubt is the cruelest thing. Lives are at stake. women voters this election were definitely more likely to vote Blue.
Laurie, all of this is correct, but the election should never have been so close that this mattered. The fact is that throughout the affluent world, from Canada to Germany to Japan, incumbents are being thrown out because of voter rage about inflation. It was always the economy, stupid, and it is now. Of all western leaders, Harris had the strongest hand to play, and she played it badly.
Sandra Trimble : there was a lot of purged votes. Spoiled ballots and mischief. I think there should be an investigation. The swing states, especially, with the heavier "weight,' given to their votes. Thanks to the Electoral College.
Yes, Gina. Trump got 72.6 million votes, or 50.8%. Harris got 46.9 million votes, or 47.5%. The two candidates got 140.5 million votes, excluding 3rd party and people who didn't vote for the top of the ticket. This, 72.6 million voters is TWENTY-TWO% (22%) of 330 Million Americans. Neither did I!π’π’ It did help a little to attend the Indivisible post election call last night! Will attend the ZOOM meeting again tonight. It was therapeutic to be with like minded people
If the country is regarded as "filled" with people with undesirable qualities, because just over half the electorate voted for Trump, is it not also "filled" with people with your priorities, Gina, since nearly half the electorate voted for Kamala? Consider, too, that she had only months to put her case, whereas Trump has been at it for many years. Maybe she didn't do too badly. Maybe, if she (or others like her) try again in 2028, things will be different! In the meantime, why not take a break before deciding what to do next.
After decades of removing funding from the education systems in America, we now have the offspring, non-college educated massive body of people that can't comprehend words larger than one syllable. Sad but true, democracy is a four syllable word so here we are. Fascist- 3 syllable word, dictatorship- four syllable word...... do you get it now?
One out of ten college students have read a book from cover to cover from childhood to where they are now. When they graduate from college they can not even do the jobs they are hired to do.
From what I have heard, opposition parties always do well in an election. I heard many, if not most voters, thought the cost of living was too high. I don't think they agreed with arguments to the contrary, either. I think both sides presented their case, maybe more from the right side who utilized social media more effectively (thank you, Musk), but, in the end, in the end, pet usual, they cast their protest voters. In the midterms this cycle, I believe, will continue.
It must be, how else can this result be interpreted? The best tennis player Iβve seen put it best: a country born as a racist patriarchy put it beyond doubt that it is a racist patriarchy.
Kristen that quote is pitch perfect! I also have felt that we have experienced what I call a βMindfuckβ. Today, Heather Cox Richardson writes about this established and deployed Russian politician theory: βThere is also no doubt that both racism and sexism played an important role in Harrisβs defeat.
But my own conclusion is that both of those things were amplified by the flood of disinformation that has plagued the U.S. for years now. Russian political theorists called the construction of a virtual political reality through modern media βpolitical technology.β They developed several techniques in this approach to politics, but the key was creating a false narrative in order to control public debate. These techniques perverted democracy, turning it from the concept of voters choosing their leaders into the concept of voters rubber-stamping the leaders they had been manipulated into backing.
In the U.S., pervasive right-wing media, from the Fox News Channel through right-wing podcasts and YouTube channels run by influencers, have permitted Trump and right-wing influencers to portray the booming economy as βfailingβ and to run away from the hugely unpopular Project 2025. They allowed MAGA Republicans to portray a dramatically falling crime rate as a crime wave and immigration as an invasion. They also shielded its audience from the many statements of Trumpβs former staff that he is unfit for office, and even that his chief of staff General John Kelly considers him a fascist and noted that he admires German Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.β
Americans are like people everywhere. You stress them enough, you unroof the basal ganglia and the amygdala, and the animal brain is revealed. The pack animal, that is, looking for an alpha male. We have endured massive stresses over the last 20+ years: 911, endless wars in the Middle East, The Second Great Depression, Covid, and massive inflation. People are looking for relief, and what better than a clown car?
Harris came across as articulate and caring, but evasive, liberal and woke. Walz was a woke bumbler. Inflation should have been explained, along with an explanation of why prices are already coming down and that this trend is accelerating. But nary a word.
When Harris volunteers went door-knocking in Pennsylvania, they were surprised to find a large majority of former Democrat-voting women complaining about prices and talking of turning to Trump or staying home. Yet the Biden policies - including the work of Kahn - were excellent. Huge mistake not to talk forthrightly about it for fear of angering the billionaires.
speaking of 9/11, it seems the terrorists have achieved their objective quite successfully, doesn'st it? We are a broken, divided nation, no longer the superpower we once were.
Harris was perfect. She absolutely represented the best of us. Folks who say βwoulda-coulda-shouldaβ remind me of Ginger Rogers who did everything Fred Astaire did but backwards & in high heels.
The part where so many voters wanted to flip the bird at women & minorities, & men wanted to strangle women back into death & submissionβ¦.there was no overcoming their bitterness. I believe if their daughter was miscarrying theyβd let her die. And shrug. Defeating white male privilege is hard, maybe harder than we expected.
It would have been easy to win actually - we needed a primary, and a real vote.
Watch, Listen, Learn - or don't - because I've been saying all of this for more than a year while everyone on here puts me down (a woman). I was right and that's sad now and too late.
I told you so - all of you. Stop hiring 24 year old marketing consultations and LISTEN - now.
2008 was never over - LISTEN - William Bill Black, PhD, Lawyer, former bank regulator.
I wonder if part of the source of what we have become didn't start when we became a superpower and began supporting dictatorships abroad because they were good for American business.
If the DNC were otherwise, we as a nation would rise from the ashes with a populist messenger - Bernie's successor. But I fear the DNC has grown too fat from trickledown.
Yes! Getting the money out of the politics would allow our candidates to speak and explain their views on issues freely. They are always,"walking on eggshells" because they have to depend on the big money to compete with their opponents. Were it not for the shackles of money, we would be able to see the candidate in a much clearer light.
βThe terroristsβ? Lady β¦ weβre the terrorists. Look in the mirror. We bring it with us with our economic model that seeks to derive commodified advantage through every contact and to make that advantage itself permanent after first contact. We are the baddies.
This was NOT massive inflation, but for those born after 1980 it seemed that way. Massive inflation meant a mortgage at 15% interest, like I paid on my first house.
Knowing nothing and learning nothing, the spoiled idiots didn't realize inflation has causes, and solutions, and just wailed wah! at the discomfort of not getting money virtually free.
Michael, I did not see any Trumpist in the videoclips, asking for an explanation on inflation and I don't believe that would have helped. But many people have a simple feeling: the state does not deliver.
In a nutshell, This Nightmare Begins Because The Chickenshit Atheist Progressive Media Would Not Print Any One Of Three Papers Ending With What Would Have Been This One Viral Line - There is only one question before us: Would you rather have a Fascist Dementia Addled Supreme Narcissistic Moron whose Father Also Had Dementia running this country or the Daughter of Two University Professors?
The morning before the election I posted the following to two Joe Rogan interviews with J.D. Vance and John Fetterman. Once I got thrown off that site for 'spamming' I moved on to Robert Reich and Micheal Moore's sites, finishing that night on the Republican Voters Against Trump's Facebook page:
Thom Hartmann 11-1-24
Americaβs billionaires would love to have a recession, particularly a really severe one.
In a recent βtown hall,β billionaire Elon Musk acknowledged what 23 Nobel Prize-winning economists across the country have predicted: If Trump is elected and he and Elon undertake their project to gut government spending, it will provoke a severe recession.
Thom goes on to give the reason Why Billionaires Would Actively Force A Stock Market Crash: Buy Cheap, Sell High. It won't be a mere recession, it will be a full blown Depression that can only Begin to End when the next Democrat Enters His Office As President on January 20 2029, one hundred after the 1929 Stock Market Crash!
If they'd printed that viral line, the majority would have said--as they voted--the Fascist Dementia Addled Supreme Narcissistic Moron whose Father Also Had Dementia. He's somebody they could have a beer with (even if he drank only Coke).
Certainly not the Daughter of Two University Professors--why that elitist might criticize their grammar! (I know what I'm talking about; I'm a retired university professor and have frequently been accused of wanting to do that by people I've just met when they found out what I did for a living). As Isaac Asimov said, "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
not only do they want to take away our Social Security in old age, they want to destroy our retirement funds as well. I'm starting to wonder if I should pull it all out and stick it under my mattress. Of course I'm just a lowly plebe, I would get the crap taxed out of me if I tried that.
Love, brother. As a "survivor" of a mother who was "born a Bircher and died a Birther," I have long known the reality you grapple with. I feel fortunate that I never had kids.
I'm a Brit who became a US citizen, and for years I just couldn't understand the appeal of Trump. As an outsider it seemed transparent, and he always came across as a bloated caricature, vulgar and self-serving. It was only when I had a sort of epiphany around about 2016, 2017, that he's somehow like a mythic Western hero. John Wayne painted Orange. Those hideous NFT images of him as a bronzed, muscular frontiersman in red, white and blue IS how some of the US sees itself. Heroic, fearless, and anti-establishment. They didn't want Scranton Joe, they wanted a wild west hero. It's brash, it's vulgar, but it is pure Americana. I love the US so much. It gave me the life I've had in my trade as a superhero artist. And in those pages the heroes are still often rendered in dazzling primary colors, no subtlety, just unapologetic bold mythologizing. I should have seen it coming, but I hoped for those better angels. Your post really touched me. All of this does hurt. What we're seeing in the mirror isn't pretty.
This: "that he's somehow like a mythic Western hero. John Wayne painted Orange." Thank you for sharing this. It fits perfectly with why so many of my relatives and friends are such staunch supporters.
Michael, you have no reason to apologize. You're entitled to be angry. I don't believe it is cynicism as much as it is the fact that we truly don't want to be like that. Maybe this was a wake-up call for Democrats to take a step back and look at what we need to do to be better. The majority has spoken and have said, "This is exactly who we are and if you don't like it, move." We speak about inclusion, helping those who need help and freedoms and rights for everybody, but reading Professor Reich's post, we apparently lost track of who we need to help the most and this election, they let us know. I believe we all need time away from political. Time to readjust and connect with our family, friends, pets and whatever else we love and enjoy. Wish you the best, Michael.
Your faith in the Democratic Party is misplaced. You must quit now and join the Greens and keep them away from any corporate or billionaire agenda and stay true to working class. The Democrats are hopeless.
The role of the Democratic Party is to BLOCK THE LEFT & PROTECT THE GOP, the RIGHT and excuse their actions. The DEMS also work with the GOP to further both mainstream partiesβ shared economic bourgeois rich ruling class interests. THIS is why the DEMS insist on repeating the phrase about βneeding a strong Repubkican Partyβ. The left doesnβt need that. Working people donβt need that. Yet the Democrats keep saying it. Why?
Itβs time to call for a massive #DemExit. Join the Green Party. Do it today. Demand your new Party resist the corporate bourgeois ruling class interests. Begin work today on SCARING both bourgeois ruling class parties by working to coordinate mass action outside these two parties who are determined to destroy us all.
I'd join the Socialist Workers Party LONG before I ever had anything to do with Jill Stein. She is nothing but, as you say, a Putin stooge, another of his useful idiots.
Adam McKay who wrote "Don't Look Up," is ruminating upon starting a Liberal Party. I await with interest, for further updates as how this may proceed...
I'm seriously considering rejoining the Socialist Workers Party or some such. I know I've had it with the Democrats. Biden will do nothing to help the rest of us and Trump is totally repugnant as a politician and a human being.
Donβt give it money. Go and take it over by working for it. Its working person policies represent everything the democrats no longer are. And itβs got national coverage.
J.A.I., tell me about the Greens. Who are you and what do you represent? Are you simply fighting against corporations and billionaires? What is your agenda for the working class? I am truly curious.
Peggy...so far J.A.I. has not responded to your query. Hummmm?
I was truly numb after the election...down and out!. Then this a.m. I woke up to Professor Reich's " call to arms' words. We Democrats may be "down" about the results of one election...but we're %*"-7% NOT OUT" by a long shot!. Time to "regroup" and rejoin the fight for what we all believe in and hold dear.! Being.90 means this may have been my last opportunity.to vote in a presidential election...however the professor's words were a jolt of espresso to my defeatist mood! Feeling sorry for myself and quitting the fight NOW is clearly not.an option for this old Welsh Dragon!. So...!BRING IT ON ! I'M BACK.IN FIGHTING MODE!
Good morning. As a busy father of a newly terrified daughter, Iβve been occupied with her morning preparation for a school day. Iβll let you know what youβre interested in shortly.
Well, as a Black man who is also a gay man, and who has lived a lot of years, I've long known that this is, in fact, 'who we are.' For others, I believe that it's now become undeniable. All I can do is roll my eyes and try not to vomit the next time I hear, "but this isn't who we are." It is.
The trump side made the most noise. They own the newspapers, radio stations etc. The people heard propaganda so much that they believed the lies. Trump is quite the con-artist .
Spot on ..... Given the voting turnout, that group of racist, misogynistic, homophobic (and I add ignorant and sociopathic) America-firstersof is still as large as it was the first time. MIA were the more liberal voters.
It is exactly who we are. Before election night I was saying no matter who wins this, America will get what it deserves. I don't think I was wrong.
I am tired of the rhetoric about peaceful resistance. I am tired of hearing about how we need to make the other side feel heard. I'm tired of hearing about how you get more flies with honey. None of that is true. if it were, Kamala, and the rest of us would not have been defeated so soundly. We need to stop pretending that everything will be okay. This election was the last ditch effort to change things, to make a better world for us and our children peacefully, the way we were taught. It is time to examine our options. We need to speak up and say when things are wrong. That people who voted for Trump are good people. That anyone who can vote for hatred, bigotry and cowardice, that anyone who can imagine that Trump would be better for the economy for Palestine for anything are just plain wrong.
The country at its bedrock was founded on hatred, bigotry and misogyny. From the genocide perpetuated upon Native Americans, to slavery, the Salem Witch Trials. It is us. It has always been us. We cannot look away from it and expect things to get better.

Consider the major anomaly that a majority of women supported abortion but many of them also voted for Trump.
That Moslems in Michigan in effect voted for Netanyahu.
That more than 50% of Hispanic men voted for a caudillo on the first day, when he had a section in JD to "denaturalize" them and ship their asses out......
Cowards said...."So there won't be an insurrection."
Exactly, Daniel. Something is not kosher. The narcissist needed to have his cake frosted with that "popular" vote, therein lies the tangled web in the weeds...
You are sane Michael. I think I have been an insane dreamer all this time. Letβs open our eyes: blinders off! Then we can start to change our national nature.
And yet, itβs that half the rest of the world sees. And unless theyβre wearing a MAGA hat, burning a cross, or protesting an abortion clinic, we ourselves wouldnβt know. Itβs the bad ones that make all of us look bad, Iβm sad to say.
Professor Reich: i am absolutely confused. yesterday, in particular, i felt as though i'd been hit by a tsunami and was almost unable to stand up. mentally, i was a wreck. but today, i've been looking at the voting numbers and seriously, something is not right here. let me show you some numbers:
Harris-Walz 2024: 67,957,895 votes
Trump-vance 2024: 72,641,564 votes
Trump 2020: 72.4 million
Biden 2020: 81+ million
now, look at those numbers carefully. the news has been that more people THAN EVER voted in 2024, yet, this is not reflected in the numbers shown above. is it possible that FEWER people voted in 2024 than in 2020? is it possible that 15+ million people did not vote, despite the long queues, the massive vote early turnout, the ballot boxes crammed with (burning) ballots ... ? it is being estimated there are roughly 20 million missing ballots. as a voter whose ballot was discarded (i learned this a few days before election day -- beyond the deadline, so too late for me to get a new ballot), i am seriously concerned that this election is not valid at all! how could trump get basically the same number of votes whilst harris got 15+ million votes FEWER than biden? seriously, Professor Reich, EXPLAIN THIS TO ME like i'm a very confused child.
I, too, think shenanigans were pulled. Remember Trump telling everyone "I don't need your votes." He said it several times, as if he knew the fix was in, that he was going to win no matter what. I really, really want this investigated. Rachel Maddow pointed this out on her show, too. "Why would a presidential candidate tell you NOT to vote for him? Does that make any sense at all?" No, it doesn't.
i would also like to point out that numerous -- hundreds, i've read -- bomb threats were phoned in FROM RUSSIA to polling places in the USA -- BUT none were phoned in to red states/polling places. only blue polling places.
I'm aware. They really screwed with our election. AGAIN! Republicans are working with them, hand in glove. Charging them with election interference would be difficult, because you need definitive proof, but they should have been ousted from Congress after knowingly participating in an insurrection. It's not like they hid it! So why they are STILL there, I will never understand.
Theo Fenraven : I agree: our constitution has a remedy in the 14th amendment section 3 disqualification clause. It was applied to a county commissioner in New Mexico after the J6 insurrection, that is the only time it was applied, as far as i know. i bet tRUMP's constitution included in his bible does not include it.
And we see this works. Iβm thinking each βelectionβ going forward will include these types of interventions. The US has a history of manipulating elections and intervening in clandestine ways in the elections of foreign adversaries. Why wouldnβt we invite, even explicitly invite, foreign governments to intervene here. Reality Winner discovered foreign meddling in 2016 and when her superiors wanted it ignored, she leaked it to the media. We see what happened to her. Obama KNEW there was meddling but decided the best move was to keep it quiet. Mueller discovered links between the Trump campaign and Russian agents but just handed the hot potato to Barr who flushed it. And once Garland got his office decorated with his plaques, family photos, diplomas, and Eagle Scout badges, he buried that investigation and slow walked the others. That decision will have deadly consequences. I predict Trump will keep Garland and send his grandkids birthday cards. This move will further terrify this coward and so he will βserveβ until discarded.
I never even thought about that but I'm pretty sure Garland will resign. trump needs will appoint all extreme maga loyalists into every aspect of government and a R Senate will confirm them.
How do we know Garland isn't MAGA? I mean, come on! Look at all the stuff he buried or didn't follow up on during Biden's? He should have gone after Trump for insurrection and stealing classified information and didn't! And now we're stuck with that abomination.
Theo, Garland is a highly conservative pick of Obama , when Obama was being fooled by bipartisan bull, spouted by one of those well known prior repugnant Oligarchs. I forget his name. Maybe Orrin Hatch.....
Garland probably hopes he can resign without any stir. It would not be surprising that Trump βasksβ him to stay on with the same style used by a mafia boss. Garland, after all, saved Trump. I think he slow walked the investigations because he wanted to avoid standing up to a former president. He was just a horrible pick for AG. Horrible.
There were many people defending him in the first year when he only arrested and or detained the foot soldiers but I have seen no defense of his inaction since.
Exactly!!! We should all protest this election!!! Like Trump once spouted, he will not leave the whitehouse hence the insurrection and now he's said it again...
You are right about the question, but the answer is βWeβll take the narcissistic moron, the malign liar, the aspiring totalitarian, the never bright and now demented weaver of inherent nonsense, the dimwit who claims to know more about everything than anyone, the criminal who seeks vengence on anyone attempting to resist his anti-social impulses.β We have long known who he is; we are repulsed by seeing the undeniable reflection exposing who we are.
I, too, just questioned the validity of the votes on another group. Something is certainly amiss. I feel it in my old bones...we need a recount!!!! And we need to speak LOUD!!!!
If the criminal tried to overturn the 2020 election, heβs more than capable in figuring out how to cheat in the 2024 election.
He tried to get the Georgia governor to find more non existent votes. So what makes you think he was fair. He always wanted the popular vote this time he got it. Once a criminal always a criminal. What makes you think he has been fair. A leopard never changes his spots. Donβt think this is too big a ploy for him to pull off, just look at January 6th. Heβs a mega talented criminal who is so good at hoodwinking the people. He thinks we are all suckers. He doesnβt like anyone to be better than him.
The SC ruling on in Virginia only applied to the primary ballots. I too saw reports of massive purging. 19 million was the number I saw. Why was trump saying that there was massive cheating in Pennsylvania and that law enforcement was on the way? They didn't need the proud boys at the polling sites, the voter roles had already been purged. Something is definitely off. This isn't a tweeker as every single pollster, media outlet and the VP herself had said. A total blowout of all 3 branches of government ( although we're still not sure where Congress stands) which is odd as well. We assumed as President Obama had announced that the results wouldn't be known on Tuesday. That we'd have to wait at least a few days. And yet we immediately find out the results Tuesday night but not the House? Why? The down ballot is the same ballot as the presidential ballot.
Totally agree. And will the dems or even someone like Robert Reich actually look at this? No. They tucked their tails and wallowed after the Gore steal. They will do it again. This country is doomed.
I too wonder at this and have learned that tRump over the years is terrible at keeping secrets. He almost revealed the voter number fixing didnβt he, when he didnβt seem at all concerned about the get out the vote?! And what of all the money available to him? Yes, Kamala raised more from more individuals but the oligarchs behind tRump had millions to play with and could pay off whomever they wanted!
I truly believe that you are right! This should be investigated! And quickly! It is not a conspiracy theoryβ it is an arithmetic error! Intentional or not? Letβs figure out where it happened,
I would check the swing states, obviously , and Pennsylvania, specifically!
He very clearly gave us part of his vote-stealing playbook through his accussations of the dems trying to steal the vote. What did dems do? Vowed to everyone how safe our elections were while he was getting voters knocked off lists and suing states election boards. Dems lied, flat out.
You ask a good question. Many appear to have stayed home, aka not voted. We need facts, though, and not conjecture. As a former elected official, I have seen this phenomenon of staying home out of fear, distrust, and lack of faith that voting matters. It will be up to the midterms to further test this. For now we need facts, data thatβs reliable. Thanks for raising this, @GrrlScientist.
Also many Trump voters voted for Democrats down ballot. Something is definitely fishy with these results, but there wonβt be any investigation and weβll never find out.
Very much agree. Dems were so busy vowing how safe our elections are that they completely missed the very real stealing of the election by Trump and Musk. Dems complete failure in this has happened twice before with Gore and Kerry. Yes, America is at least half racist, misogynistic, and lacking critical reasoning, but Trump laid out very clearly how he was stealing the vote. He did this through his accusations of dems stealing the vote. Man we need new dem leadership. They just set us up to never winning an election again.
I spent the last three months arguing with people on our side to stop blaming the media. And with people in general to stop blaming politicians. Blame the rich, who organized this mess. Blame the "conservatives", who birthed this "revolution", starting with Nixon, Reagan, and Bush, and then watched it get usurped by illiberalism and the particular fascism of MAGA land. Lastly, blame the voters themselves, for their ignorance and short-sightedness when given a perfectly illustrated choice of their options. This one was a victory for the Confederacy, for the Oligarchy, for nihilism, chaos, hatred, and bullying.
Yes, the rich have been winning this long game. Their propaganda game has tricked the masses. Not many people understand how Neoliberalism has wrought so much pain on the middle class.
Trump is a Russian plant and a useful tool of the oligarchs here and abroad. He and Bannon and Manafort feed on their largesse while they scheme to harvest the dollars of their rubes and facilitate the rape of the lower classes.
Neoliberalism yes, but full/on Lewis Powell Movement Conservatism, strategized in back rooms for decades as a plan to defeat all that FDR wrought, not to mention Jefferson.
Now comes the finger pointing, the blame and discussion of Democrats' fail points.
Our fail points are misogyny and racism. This country is rooted in misogyny and racism. The nation's founders were white men. We killed and stole land from native Americans who were here long before us. We bought and sold Black people to use as slaves. Women did not even have the right to vote until 1920, and that did not include people of color. Until as late as 1962, individual states still prevented people of color from voting on contrived grounds like literacy tests, poll taxes, and claims that residence on a reservation meant that they were not a resident of the state. Women could not buy a house or have credit in their own name until 1974, with the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.
So let's start with those fail points, and good luck with that, because we are not "over" them and won't be any time soon. The demographics of this country are changing. White men are seeing their majority status dwindle before their very eyes, and they are terrified and angry. Republicans preyed upon this fear and rage by repeatedly lying and fear-mongering, whipping White men into a fury, and in this election, they came out with a vengeance.
It's not true that we Dems failed get our message across. Our message got across perfectly fineβ scared white men just weren't buying. Unfortunately, not enough Black and Hispanic men could stand to elect a woman president, either. Obama may have elected because he's a manβbut Michelle Obama never would have been.
According to census data, the percentage of prime age men in the US workforce has declined significantly over the past 50 years, dropping by around 8-10%, with the most notable decline after the mid-1960s. So there is a smaller proportion of prime age men in the labor force now, compared to 50 years ago.
Also according to census data, the percentage of White people in the United States has steadily declined over the past 50 years, dropping from around 80% in the 1970s to roughly 60% in recent years, due to lower White birth rates, aging White population, and increased immigration from other ethnic groups. Projections are for this trend will continue, leading to a "majority-minority" nation by 2050.
That's a long way off. I won't live to see it, but I hopeβfor our children's sakeβthere will come a time when our gender and diversity are accepted, and when White man-rage against this changing demographics is spent.
I just wonder at what cost, after how much damage to our country and democracy?
What message are you talking about that the Democrats got across? I swore I would never donate again because the amount we can donate can never be as much as the billionaires will donate. But I did so that Harris could get her message out. I never heard what I wanted to hear, Bernie's message. I hoped she wasn't telling us what she wanted so that the billionaires wouldn't talk over her with their "money as speech."
On Facebook yesterday, I read a comment to another Facebook friend who was thrilled with the patriotic message at Mass on Sunday and was happy with the outcome of the election. Her message was full of happy emojis and tiny US flag pictures. I used to believe that people who thought there was a guy in the sky who forgave you for bad behavior if you promised never to do it again (even if you lapsed) and took you to heaven with him to live forever were harmless. I thought, let them comfort themselves with their beliefs.
I no longer think they are harmless. They are stupid enough to believe they will be risen out of the grave because of their beliefs and give money to the church, and they are stupid enough to vote for an evil idiot who gives BJs to a microphone in front of millions on TV and vote against their own best interests.
Tax the churches! Confiscate their real estate if they can't or won't pay their taxes. Take their fantasy land away from them. They are a danger to themselves and others. They have fallen for a con that has lasted for 2000 years, and it is now threatening my life and my freedom.
Gloria ; "because the amount we can donate can never be as much as the billionaires".. It is the biggest Poll Tax ever, and illegal. But don't hold your breath while waiting for this to be ended. the money is quietly setting up a Corporation in Texas : Elon Musk will be the CEO of the United States of America, INC. He was not born here, and cannot become President : so this is his plan to be the owner of US.
Lesley : oh, for sure. They are totally lawless, and will not hesitate to lock up their "enemies" no matter if it is legitimate or not. 'Just' like when he gets "sentenced" in the upcoming hearing. Which will never happen.
That judge blew it by postponing. Now, Jack Smith is backing away. It gets more dire by the minute. I seize this opportunity, to say Laurie Blair, we are amigas, it just helps to connect with our own.
Gloria, I had a similar experience with a Facebook friend posting an image of Christ holding an I support Israel flag.
If children are sacred in this world, then nothing, absolutely nothing is.
Many years ago, a Jewish friend said he thought of Christians as dupes of the Jews. I regarded it as an odd view at the time. Netanyahu, addressing our Congress, his own useful idiots, brought it all home to me.
I am still Christian, but have not supported Israel since I became even halfway politically conscious. I still don't support Israel. And yes, the, the Christians who support Israel are dupes of Netanyahu. However, not all Jews support Israel. And while I decry the Holocaust and mourn all 11 million murdered, not just the Jewish victims, I am firmly against Israel, because the Holocaust did not entitle Britain to steal that land from those living there and give it to the Jews.
Also, while I am not pro-Hamas, I can see why so many Palestinians support them. Not content with what they have, Israeli settlers have been moving into Palestinian areas without even so much as a by-your-leave, stealing Palestinian homes, building settlements, etc. The Oct. 7 attacks did not come out of nowhere. And Israel used the attack/hostage crisis to begin a genocide campaign against the Palestinian people. The Palestinian people absolutely deserve the right of self-determination.
Gloria J Maloney, I understand your outrage. Churches in service of the ego have won out in our and world history, but not because their message is the best. No, it's because they have been the most violent, cruel, and ruthless in destroying the competition, the churches in service of truth (truths such as love, not ego). Churches such UU, were historically met with violence and repression, and so were never allowed to flourish, to play a larger role in society to help bring about a more loving nation. Imagine if they and other more peace-loving, less hierarchial-loving, less violence-loving churches had flourished?
You were not going to hear Bernie 's message because BERNIE WASN'T THE CANDIDATE. But, go ahead and think that an intelligent woman of color should be a parrot for an angry old white guy.
YES ! There are plenty of insane people here who say it's god's will for women to die because of birth delivery etc issues. Now, that's a devil saying that!
I'm copying this post down the line.

"I no longer think that they are harmless". They're not. Of course not all Christians are mindless Trumpers. But that lot doesn't tend to speak up when the idiots bloviate. This is why I am in an Independent Orthodox Church. The mainline church is lousy with ex-Episcopalians and ex-Catholics who hate that their former Churches have begun (just begun) to try to be more inclusive of women, LGBTQIA+ people, and others. I can virtually guarantee you that many mainline and some "traditionalist Orthodox group members voted for the Fascist.
No, that's not true. Why do you all NOT listen. She would have won by a landslide. But I guess one thing is too. This liberal blog has plenty of it's own money. The Dems you are courting do not. Now the bubble is burst and a felon will go to the WH.
I told you so - all of you. Stop hiring 24 year old marketing consultations and LISTEN - now.

From a European perspective: the countdown to Armageddon has started. Without the American example of democracy, shaky and dubious as it may have been, there is nothing left to stop the descent into barbarism. I despair for my children and grandchildren
The Earth will be further assaulted, & muskrat owns the sky onward as he pokes holes thru the atmosphere with his rockets. As biodiversity dwindles into extinction--which building the wall exacerbates--tis only a matter of time. Planet Earth is Overpopulated, I can't imagine anyone wanting progeny.
nope, just listening to Bernie Sanders would have done it. But no, I guess the economy is peachy for this group after all. When you come down from the high horses to tell us our checkbooks are just fine - and there isn't anything in it - we turn off both parties.
I told you so - all of you. Stop hiring 24 year old marketing consultations and LISTEN - now.

Americans are very hard-headed. Always have been. The country was stocked with them by the Brits who were then surprised by their rudeness in staging a revolution. This beat goes on. This is the way Americans learn...the hard way.
Do I hear Mr Trump ringing his bell....?? School is about to start and we don't want to be late. I hear he's very strict.
Colorful charachterization. I add Garrison Keillor's (sp?) quip that (those we now revere as "real Americans") were "tossed out of every decent country in Europe." Context, religious fanatics. Is it "in the blood?' The followers. Born and bred.
The election of Trump, however it happened, made me realize I no longer belong in America. First of all, I can't afford to live here anymore, but more importantly, the "ideals" Trump promotes are not at all what I believe or support. I thought people were essentially good, but this election strongly suggests well over half of them aren't. They are racists, sexists, and bigots who seemingly admire criminals. I don't want to spend my life around people like that. "Greed rules, the rest are fools." What a nauseatingly empty vision of life!
Do you think Trump will stop the war on Gaza? Not on your life! He's all for Israel doing whatever they want. So holding her responsible for that is ridiculous. It's a complex situation, and unless you're on the front line, you don't understand it. As for student loan cancellation; these things don't happen in a vaccuum. Without congressional suppport, nothing happens. Biden did amazingly well, given he dealt with Republican obstruction his entire term. It's so easy to pontificate from your couch, but real life is very different. She would have done a much better job than Trump will; he just wants to rule like a king and give full rein to his massive ego. We are in for a world of hurt. All of us.
And no, Mr. Reich, WE are not becoming that. A psychotic group within the country is a virulent cancer turning the country into a giant tumor! WE did not take the threat seriously enough to stop it in 2016, to stop its development ever since Ronald Reagan and the Moral Majority infected conservatism with Eviligelicalism, to stop it by putting that seditious demonic cult leader in prison for lying about a viral pandemic causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands and for instigating a violent attack on the seat of the Legislative Branch of the government while claiming to be all about "law and order," and to stop it yesterday from what it is going to do come January--END THIS 250-YEAR EXPERIMENT IN DEMOCRATIC RULE.
You are trying to be "the bigger person" and not call out these people for what they are.Hillary Clinton was 100000% correct in her assessment. She was telling the BRUTAL TRUTH. Too many liberals are not willing to be honest about this situation, and are not dealing with the threat seriously as a result. Perhaps a couple decades of Christo-fascist authoritarian rule will make people wake up.
For a while, yesterday, I was laughing to myself remembering the old Winston Churchill quip: "The Americans always do the right thing......After they have tried everything else." Silly me, I thought we had already reached "everything else." Apparently there's a deeper hole to dig.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure there is a bottom to the hole that can be dug here. When you're dealing with millions of people who invent insane alternate realities on the fly seemingly as easily as they take a breath, and we can't bring ourselves to see the problem for what it is, there is no limit to where this could go.
Still reeling, but now seeing more clearly the catastrophic changes ahead in the US and the whole world. Don't lose sight of Vance, a young man with a clear head more extreme than the Orange One, positioning himself for many years ahead...
Did people vote FOR Trump and the Republican Party or AGAINST Biden/Harris and the Democrats? Sometimes people end up voting for someone they don't like in order to stop someone they like even less. We had a general election here in the UK recently when the Conservative vote collapsed because of the government's poor performance. This resulted in a so-called 'landslide' for the mediocre Labour Party because people wanted to punish the Conservatives. In their first 100 days, the new Labour Party's popularity has plummeted because of their insensitive policies and the unimpressive performance of their unpopular leaders. One report said that 85% of ex-Conservatives who voted for Labour now regret having done so. A crisis is building. If Trump implements even half of his ludicrous policies, the USA will turn against him very fast. So, get on with it Donald! The quicker you screw things up, the quicker you will be impeached or Amendment 25'd! You may not end up hanging by your ankles from a lamp-post like Mussolini, but you will be back on the path to jail.
He may be impeached, but he'll never be convicted - not with a Republican majority Senate. And, he's never going to jail as long as he's in the White House. But, at his age and, given his physical/mental health, he may not be around long enough for either to happen to him!
If that many Americans are voting against Biden/Harris, we're still in big trouble. I believe in 2016 many people were voting against H.Clinton. This time round I believe mostly people were voting for Trump. We're in big trouble. Don't forget, though, that a very large percentage of us voted against Trump and for Harris. My fear is that by the end of the next four years too much of our political structure will be compromised to permit a free and fair electoral appraisal.
Yes, and it was the bankers etc too. We never fixed it and let the wall street blame all of us and the media they bought - hook line and sinker plus the boat they rowed out in

I went outside my apartment building on Nov. 6. Iβve never seen people so depressed. I was like a Zombie. At night I watched the comedians on tv. Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, the cast of the Daily Show. Try to YouTube them. All are in comeplete shock. Have Trump down more than perfect and his family. I love Kamala, Tim and Joe. I bought some gummies of Melatonin so I could sleep. Canβt watch tv because Trump is on every minute. So frightening. Itβs getting worse every minute. Iβm at a loss. Damn it.
I remembered this interview as I watched the disintegration of our democracy.
In an interview with NPR journalist Margret Warner in September 2012 , Retired Supreme Court Justice David Souter discussed the state of civics education in the country. And said the following:-
βI donβt believe there is any problem of American politics in American public life which is more significant today than the pervasive civic ignorance of the Constitution of the United States and the structure of government.β
He said the American republic was more likely to fall by an electorate who does not know who to hold accountable in government for specific problems, rather than by an invasion or a military coup.
βAn ignorant people can never remain a free people. Democracy cannot survive too much survive too much ignorance.β
Not only was he right, we are seeing the result of that ignorance.
We need to learn how to recognize evil when it first begins to appear. The Republican Party has grown into the full blown face of evil. It's a long road that doesn't have a garbage pail at the end of it. Their day will come. We need to figure out how to make that happen.
So heavy: why are so many of our fellow humans blind to evil? A long time ago (I'm 71) I speculated that a chromosome was dormant: the one that perceives the threat of evil.
You might not be far off in that assessment. I'm the same age as you, BTW. It certainly seems to be true in the case of many (most?) Americans. But then, too, the Republicans helped that along by working to dumb down the American electorate.
I knew that the Republicans had fascist tendencies--hell, no, they WERE/ARE fascists as far back as Nixon. I made the regrettable mistake of abandoning Socialism for the Democrats. Last night Kamala and Joe did the nonsense with the "peaceful transfer of power" BS when they should be challenging this crap and building some kind of resistance. They won't lift one finger to help us so, we have to help ourselves.
I donβt think he or the MAGAs ever intend to hold another free or fair election. The Republicans of the past upheld the Constitution, this group wonβt.
They figured out that they can win in a free and fair election, which it was, in spite of their nonexistent platform. My guess is that they will keep this, but honestly, at this point, we don't know.
Hell no! Theyβre mostly loyal opposition. Communist Party 18% Zhirinovsky 7%. The losers you guys love are HATED in Russia. They get 5% of the vote, max. Nobody likes them. They call them βthe traitors.β
The elections are 100% free and fair. Putinβs totals line up very well with good pre-election polls. For a long time he was running at 83% support. He really is that popular. People canβt believe it because they donβt understand Russia.
Putinβs not a dictator. Heβs won every election fair and square. No one proved a single stolen vote. Even the traitor opposition is on state TV several times a week. They put them on there because they think they are fools, so pro-Putin people debate them snd try to show how theyβre wrong. Last election the traitors ran 13 different candidates!
Russia has an all-volunteer army plus reserves so no opposition people will be sent to Ukraine anyway. And most of that is loyal opposition anyway, so Putin likes them. There is a draft, yes, but draftees are not allowed to serve outside Russia so theyβre not in Ukraine.
They did a mobilization of reserves a while back. Theyβre called mobiks. Every Russian man age 18-50 is in the reserves. The mobilization called up some small % of them to go to Ukraine.
Putin is a great fighter against US imperialism. Following Lenin and Stalin, I support every country that opposes US imperialism.
Console yourselves with this thought: it took fourteen years of Tory misrule in the UK before the voters threw them out in a landslide. Pendulums will always be pendulums, and ours will swing back.
A large part of Harrisβs defeat rests with Bidenβs failure to sell his accomplishments.
Apart from the White House Press Secretary, he needed to have a room of full time Mad Men whose expertise is selling things to the public that they have never heard of and making the mundane sexy. Whenever someone on social media says that Biden and Harris accomplished nothing, I say they think that ONLY because they werenβt paying attention. Unfortunately, even in an internet age when the truth, from primary sources, is only a few keystrokes away, thatβs still too much trouble for millions, whoβd rather be fed lies promoted by those with a vested economic and political interest in getting as many people to believe what they want them to believe.
Those Mad Menβs copy promoting Bidenβs accomplishments should have been posted, in easy to understand and engaging form in every media outlet, from his very first day in the White House, because if one waits till a re-election campaign has begun, itβs already way too late. Touting the presidentβs and, more broadly, Democratsβ work, and how it genuinely improves the lives of average Americans has to be made a part of the publicβs landscape, where it becomes ubiquitous and a natural part of their lives. Like the good bacteria in our digestive systems that displace the bad, the solution is to flood the public with truths so there is little room for lies.
the fact that Americans re-elected Trump tells us what America has become:
someone called Tues night "an American Selfie" and it ain't a pretty picture.
I've read through Will Durant's 11-volume History of Civilization, and it's full of long-term ups and downs, and we're living through a chapter of downward momentum ... Trump, Putin, XI, Modi, Kim --- this handful of men (all narcissistic psychopaths) control the planet in every aspect: trade, war, climate, technology, and they're all in to maintain and grow their own power for their own self-interest, and they're all willing to destroy their own countries for their own self-interest.
This chapter of history will not end well, and unfortunately, we're living through it.
Maybe Malthus's old formula for overpopulation will hit hard: war disease and famine always bring down overpopulation, and the world is way too overpopulated.
So I'd say, enjoy your lives as best you can, because the future does not look bright.
We needed Biden/his people to give a twice monthly chat update about what they have done for the American people. Why canβt democrats message?? Itβs insane.

Thanks for bringing that up:
Let me hasten to add that although I am >not< a Christian, being more closely allied to the nontheological Buddhist persuasion, I'd like to direct your attention to some relevant thoughts from someone who >is< an expert on the question:

Yeah! Sarcasm noted. That's the kind of "weave" a cop would pull you over and haul you off to the hoosgow for if he caught you >driving< that way!

Well said DZK!
Very well set out.
Thank you

What makes you believe those non voters are going to be different than the voters? They might be even worse.
Iβm wondering about them, too.
Well, thr non-voters did vote, in a way. They stayed home and helped a felon win.
Thry didn't vote, they have zero right to complain. They can SHUT UP.
I will not forget what democracy is and means.

Thank you for the information
We have removed funding and the arts from education, along with teaching the trades in high schools for mechanics, plumbing or electronics, etc. As a result we don't have businesses started up in our communities that will be handed down from generations to family members. This is a result of the technology era where all had to go on to college for computers and electronics. Guess what, it didn't work then and it sure as hell isn't working now. Republicans never want to put money into education because if we are smart they would not be getting away with purging voter registries, and redistricting the maps like they just did.
Gina, you gotta get over it. Read 1984 again.
Certainly not that book, not now. Iβve retreated to the Narnia Chronicles and the Famous Five isnβt far behind. Wishing you well.
Robert, my hope is that they feel the full force of their choice.
I think Kamala Harris was very clear about saying she would push for ending the monopoly power specifically on grocery prices.
that's not an economic platform - a few random suggestions?
Listen and learn people - I already posted it. Or, maybe not, the people on here do not listen
She said that at first and then she revoked it after her donors and the New York Times said it would cause bread lines. She ran as a Republican!
"condescending rage of Democrats"? WTF, have you ever listened to the rage that pours out of tRump rallies?
Michael Hutchinson: Yes, Trump voters are deplorably stupid and epitomize the phrase "UGLY AMERICAN." See how easy that was?
Angry much?
I am angry, correct. Iβm a man of the Left. Fascists arenβt even humans to me and now half the country is openly fascist.
?
Harris fucked up? Hell yeah. 16 million Democrats stayed home.
Those 16 million democrats decided to indirectly vote for trump.

Michael : how can any woman "get over it"? they are killing women and girls with Draconian laws right now. 1984 is passΓ©.
1984 passΓ©? It is more of today then any book!
Well, women did get over Roe, they either stayed at home or voted for Trump.
If there is a good explanation for millions of registered voters not voting, I havenβt seen it in the news yet.
Tried to google it, but there are more people with questions and conjecture.
Not really an answer that explains over 15 million Democrats and 3 million Republicans just not voting.
There are literally lives on the line this time with the policies promised. It just wonβt make sense to me that people would choose not to vote.
Yes. If there are really 15 million who didn't vote, there needs to be an explanation of how that makes sense.
Women voted Harris.
Thank you Laurie! Spot on!
1984 was required reading in 1964. It's on the banned book list in Missouri in 2024.
We can't "get over it," they are killing our daughters and granddaughters. It Won't happen, : "getting over it".with deaths mounting.
Me too but I was wrong!
Sandra Trimble : there was a lot of purged votes. Spoiled ballots and mischief. I think there should be an investigation. The swing states, especially, with the heavier "weight,' given to their votes. Thanks to the Electoral College.
You sound like trump in 2020, Laurie. No evidence at all of this. We lost. The bell curve has spoken: most of us are not good people.
22% of Americans voted for Trump. That's not even a quarter of Americans. 78% of Americans did not vote for Trump.
Alas. The voter repression was there but could not have made up the difference. Lots to fix here.
There were bomb threats that the FBI confirmed were from Russia. That should have paused the election until investigations could be done.
How do you know there were purged votes and spoiled ballots? Evidence?
Robert, the film Vigilante.inc which has been free recently, documents new voter suppression strategies.
Is this anything different from what theyβve been doing all along? What can we do?
More than one-fifth and LESS THAN ONE-QUARTER of Americans elected Trump. So the "Who we are" talk goes out the window. Trump didn't get 51% of voters with less a quarter of American votes.
Now then, I find it sexist to blame the outcome on a women. Harris should not be the historical Eve that caused America's downfall from Democracy. Hillary Clinton was wrongfully blamed for the Democrats fall from Grace.
Harrison lost his Senate race to Lyndsey Graham, yet he was put in charge of running ALL the Democrats.
Under Harrison, the main organizing tool of Democrats, NGP VAN's parent company was sold to a London based private equity firm.
Reform was working. Most importantly, since 2020
the DNC didn't organize in ALL states. I don't know what they did, except allow the sale of NGP VAN's paent company and get the Reach app ready to roll out.
Since it's time to point fingers, It's not fair to point at Harris, IMO. Biden had a record to run on. Walz was "America's Dad," and spoke to and for Midwesterners. Too bad the DNC allowed him to take a back seat and not be on all the Sunday talkshows and be more of a spokesperson. When a former RNC Chairman is doing more talking for Dems on MSNBC, the current DNC Chair was MIA.
It was up to Party leaders to realize that the MSM was running a damaging poll that said people didn't like the direction of the economy and thought that Trump would be better for the economy and the Border. In fact, Trump was the one person who stopped the Border crisis from being fixed. When the party let this false narrative ferment, it was over for Harris/Walz and many down ballot races.
President Clinton with the help of Secretary Reich proved that infrastructure investment creates jobs.
I didn't either!
Yeah I didn't realize we were the minority either.
Perfectly stated and thank you.
It would have been easy to win actually - we needed a primary, and a real vote.
Watch, Listen, Learn - or don't - because I've been saying all of this for more than a year while everyone on here puts me down (a woman). I was right and that's sad now and too late.

I wonder if part of the source of what we have become didn't start when we became a superpower and began supporting dictatorships abroad because they were good for American business.
absolutely.
You really put forth an excellent point here! I agree with you!
The root cause of trump is stupidity.
Well said!
Michael, there is no shared fourth estate, the news continually partial info and lies
Michael, I did not see any Trumpist in the videoclips, asking for an explanation on inflation and I don't believe that would have helped. But many people have a simple feeling: the state does not deliver.
This is what happens when we let the rule of law decay.
That is to the point: after 6th january Trump insurgency was clear and it was impossible to arrange a political comeback. The system failed terribly.
I can't "β€" this. It's an AWFUL prophesy and will mean world-wide suffering...however, I believe what you're saying is the truth.
No it didn't. The fools on here who refused to listen. Apparently the public is fed up.

This is some prediction!!
Oh you mean aligning with the party that ran Jill Stein, the Putin stooge? No fucking thank you.
The American Greens are a con to make money for Jill Stein (the European Green parties don't even recognize it).
Try the Working Families Party, or the Democratic Socialists of America, or the American Socialist Party, or similar parties.
WooHoo! Look at you go, Lynn! For what you call an old Welsh Dragon, you still have a lot of pep in your step! I'm with you! Bring it on!
You GO, girl! This Scots/Irish Welsh dragon seconds the emotion. Trump's got my Celtic temper up.
You are right Michael, it is exactly who we are.

Cowards said...."So there won't be an insurrection."
https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lduy6fzpVMHbAh7wkmeeBhAPpmM9b2gAA
Exactly, Daniel. Something is not kosher. The narcissist needed to have his cake frosted with that "popular" vote, therein lies the tangled web in the weeds...
Most Hispanic men voted for Harris.
You are sane Michael. I think I have been an insane dreamer all this time. Letβs open our eyes: blinders off! Then we can start to change our national nature.
HALF of us, darling. Only half of us.
Does that make any sense at all?" No, it doesn't.
i would also like to point out that numerous -- hundreds, i've read -- bomb threats were phoned in FROM RUSSIA to polling places in the USA -- BUT none were phoned in to red states/polling places. only blue polling places.
ok, correction: at least 40 bomb threats were phoned in to polling places in blue areas -- 38 in Georgia alone. 32 in Fulton County.
4 on the Navajo Nation where Jonathan Nez is running.
But they were debunked immediately. That can't be the only Russian interference. It's way too lightweight for Russia.
Doesn't matter if they were debunked. When someone calls in a bomb threat, it must be checked out every time. That interfered with voting.
What I mean by that is that it was immediately addressed and far too ineffective to justify such a massive victory for trump and the Republicans
Theo Fenraven, I couldn't watch her concession speech becsuse I thought she shouldn't. A investigation is necessary not a concession.
I thought the same. Democrats constantly cave when they should stand strong.
Itβs not too late to investigate!
Exactly!!! We should all protest this election!!! Like Trump once spouted, he will not leave the whitehouse hence the insurrection and now he's said it again...
HOW do we protest?
Theo Fenraven, I agree.
Thank you again for this link. I think Hartmann is absolutely right.
He has pulled off the biggest con in history !!
19 million votes purged?
Robert, watch the free film, Vigilante.inc. by a Guardian reporter. Reveals more voter suppression.
Ok did they purge 20 million votes in 2020 also?
19-20
Republicans have been doing that way before trump
Do you have evidence for this? Did these people try to vote and find they were purged? Were they all valid voters?
This happened. Illegal but sanctioned by the SC anyway. There's a law that it can't be less than 90 days before the election. The SC did it anyway.
No proof of the exact number yet. It's an estimate. But 5 states that we know of purged their roles under GOP lawsuits.
https://virginiamercury.com/2024/10/31/a-gop-dominated-supreme-court-resuscitates-youngkins-late-game-virginia-voter-purge/
Won in the same way Putin wins elections... nothing suspicious at all....
That is assuming we will even HAVE midterms. Right now I'm cynical.
GrrlScientist, I agree. I posted about this below.
Also many Trump voters voted for Democrats down ballot. Something is definitely fishy with these results, but there wonβt be any investigation and weβll never find out.
Just stop with the conspiracies, please?Americans wanted a racist for president and they got him.
20 million missing ballots?
Is it not that we're missing a couple of states in the total?
Very much agree. Dems were so busy vowing how safe our elections are that they completely missed the very real stealing of the election by Trump and Musk. Dems complete failure in this has happened twice before with Gore and Kerry. Yes, America is at least half racist, misogynistic, and lacking critical reasoning, but Trump laid out very clearly how he was stealing the vote. He did this through his accusations of dems stealing the vote. Man we need new dem leadership. They just set us up to never winning an election again.
Don't overlook red states culling their voter registration rolls, even in the last days
Why was your ballot discarded? And how did you learn of that?
Not many people understand how Neoliberalism has wrought so much pain on the middle class.
could there be more to this than just the politics and the cultural trends specific to the US?
Could this be a worldwide trend, with the felon elect being a US-specific manifestation of it?
Tragedy of the Commons?
He was not born here, and cannot become President : so this is his plan to be the owner of US.
rumpus is a usefull idiot. muskrat desires the throne. Don't think some "not born here"
clause matters to dictators, we are now a lawless country.
Actually, Musk intends to own the country by becoming its CEO.

From a European perspective: the countdown to Armageddon has started. Without the American example of democracy, shaky and dubious as it may have been, there is nothing left to stop the descent into barbarism. I despair for my children and grandchildren

Welcome to Project 2025 and Hungary 2.0.
Exactly. We suck. Americans suck.

All of us.
You don't think either.
YOU LOST
Israel can fund it's own darn war and I can help the hurricane victims. WWII Jews???
All that false misinformation you are feeding through NPR and your media outlets about "can't do anything" is FALSE.
SO when you get off YOUR couch and stop name calling the trumpets too. Maybe we can get the common sense party.
NO one voted for you - because by your words - you can't do anything.
Biden didn't either - can't do anything...... none of you. Not republicans not democrats.....
I feel sorry for you. Your future is as dark as ours.
Who are we?
The Fascist States of America.
Gilead from The Handmaid's Tale.
I seriously doubt it.
Thanks. These people are fascist trash. Theyβre dead to me.

Let's hope!!
Hope is a weak argument against what people fear. Hope is trumped by fear. Pun intended.
He may be impeached, but he'll never be convicted - not with a Republican majority Senate. And, he's never going to jail as long as he's in the White House. But, at his age and, given his physical/mental health, he may not be around long enough for either to happen to him!
and then we'll be stuck with vance. Or whatever name he's going by these days.
Unfortunately, true.

Obamas - you couldn't sell it this time could you? You let that man walk out
of jail and NO, Kamala you didnβt help homeowners - all they got was a $1200
check AND lost everything - because of FRAUD.
When I tell you something on here - itβs because itβs true.
She had no economic platform. And, now sheβs ruined as a future candidate because
sheβll never be asked to run again. Sheβs a smart and good politician but now it wonβt happen.

Sure, Jan. You're a scratchy, broken record. Go home.
YOU LOST ! You'll be heading home soon. You scratchy - didn't save democracy after all did you?
Damn it.
Turn that sad frown up side down and start talking about these videos I'm posting and demanding the Dems make changes - today!

You keep posting here to drive traffic to your own Substack.
And you call the trumpets stupid?? Bitter pills on Tuesday huh??
I told you so - you had the wrong "messaging".

I wish I could give this 10 likes.
It's too bad there is no 1-10 scale for likes.
Not a bad idea!
I have a few other ones to watch. I truly hate to say this to this group or maybe not

Thank you. These next four years will be terrifying, but as long as we survive in spite of Trump, we win in the real way that matters.
Here's a prediction - the next election will go ahead and Trump or Vance will win 90% of the vote, just as Putin always does in his elections.
He won 70% last time. Nice try!
What Putin? Wow.!
I suppose that 30% are now serving in Ukraine? π€
What on earth makes you think Trump will give up control in 4 years?
Remember: ...
The purpose of Corporate Media today is to MAKE MONEY for the already super-rich, and to entrench their power.
Close political races make by far the most profit... so the corporate media ARTIFICIALLY MAKE THE RACES CLOSE, unethically.
Truth rarely makes a profit.
Before the end of the Fairness Doctrine, news departments competed on accuracy and honour, since none of them made money on news.
The Media today are destroying the planet just as surely as Big Oil, for outrageous, unethical greed
#GOPtraitors
the fact that Americans re-elected Trump tells us what America has become:
someone called Tues night "an American Selfie" and it ain't a pretty picture.
I don't get it. I mean look at FDR and his "fireside chats". Now everything built up by the Democrats will be torn away.
I am going to keep posting some actual advice.
