Trump and his supporters must not dissolve our democracy. They must be stopped at the ballot box. Please do research and evaluate the people that are running for key political spots in the states that could empower oligarchs like Donald Trump. They are dangerous and anti America and our hard fought for Constitution. 🇺🇸 A vote against them is a vote for America ..

What a jerk! How he got any recognition anywhere is a good indicator of our warped media that has this crushing need to give both "sides" equal time even though both sides' arguments are not of either equal value or equal evidence. That is not fair media, it is something else but I am not sure what to call it except unfair, rigged, false, and none of those words really describes how wrong it is.

Trump's nature represents a failure of parental guidance and U.S. education, William Leavenworth, not a consequence of ethnicity. As a ninth-generation American whose father was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, I find your bigotry disgusting.

I am a 10th & 12th generation Yankee WASP, Difny. My great-great grandfather was a Captain in the 9th Vermont, and my father was killed flying night recon missions over Nazi Germany, and lies in an American Military Cemetery in Épinal, France. Earlier ancestors were burned out of their Mohawk Valley farm by Hessians and Redcoats. Still earlier ancestors fished at the Isles of Shoals and then out of Martha's Vineyard. I am bigoted toward those Ellis Island parvenus who show no respect for the centuries of sweating and bleeding that made their citizenship here possible. Trump is such a parasite. He uses our Constitution for toilet paper. He should be hanged at the base of the Lincoln Memorial.

At one time in the history of each of us born of non-native-American decent, you could say the same thing. Most of my great-grandparents were 19th-century immigrants who could not claim even one PARENT born on this side of the Atlantic! Are you going to say that all of us are an “imported disease and an embarrassment” … because of that?

We are individuals. We all are descendants of immigrants from one place or another who moved here one way or another for one reason or another. You can’t criticize Trump or his father on THAT basis.

No. Trump is what HE is. He is a seriously deformed personality who believes only in himself and whatever HE wants. How many generations of his ancestors have lived in this country has little to do with it. The fact that he was raised not to believe in the principles this nation is built on has everything to do with it.

If he cannot be stopped and even imprisoned for treason and massive tax evasion, stealing and hiding documents that would have anyone else already UNDER the prison if they did the same, and numerous instances of lying to that American people and defying the courts, then we really are a feckless and doomed society. That’s what ALL of us, left and right and in the middle, should fear at this moment. Do we have a strong nation based on a strong constitution that sets up government of, BY and FOR the People, or do we not? I believe we do, and we shall put down hard any moves to make it otherwise.

Make America Great Again? AMERICA is a DEMOCRACY.

Trump belongs in prison. Really, Not just made up words and slogans by a party wishing to take over this nation and run it for the benefit of the very wealthy. HE.REALLY.IS. A.TRAITOR.

Not because of when his ancestors moved here. Because of what HE has done and is still seeking to do.

I believe the vast majority of American people will see to it that this terrible era in American history will be brought to a halt, and we will find the adjustments needed to fix the weaknesses Trump et al have exploited in their attempt to overcome our principles and democratic institutions.

We don’t have the gravitas to continue to be a world leader and example-setter if we cannot do that.

As I listened to the three Judges that were on TV last week, I was glad to hear them say that Trump had dug a hole that would make it impossible for Trump to become President again. Because Trump tried to over turn the Election for 2020 and the fact that he stole Classified Secret and Top Secret papers and took them to Mar A Lago and left them in a place that was easily accessible to anyone. This is call the “Espionage Act”. They said that Trumps actions would prohibit Trump from ever taking Office again! I was so glad to hear them say this!!! Arnold, I simply would note, as part of one’s research, to be particularly aware of battleground states at risk for trifecta control ( Republican control of both state chambers and the Governorship). A comparable risk is a triplex, wherein Republicans within a competitive state hold the positions of Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State.

Oct 3, 2022·edited Oct 3, 2022

My state has the GOP trifecta. As often happens, the damage done takes time to manifest. Our Covid death rate was worse than all the surrounding states, our schools have lost standing and are no longer considered among the best in the nation, mental health services were eviscerated, and now provide an opportunity for the administration to focus on snap measures that are touted as an improvement, education at all levels has been starved of funding, our Medicaid was privatized leaving too many without necessary care..... the list goes on. It is heartbreaking. It is frustrating. It is immoral.

Expand full comment

Carmen, I am so sorry! Because I don’t know whether your state is a battleground state, I wouldn’t know whether The States Project (which Reich mentioned) has adopted your state and is working, as we speak, to flip one or both of its state houses. Meanwhile, speaking for myself, if I couldn’t change the politics, I imagine I would join up with some folks in my community and do what we could to tackle some of its problems. Of course, if the Dems hold the House and pick up two Senate seats, they probably would pass most, if not all, of Biden’s potentially transformative agenda that could make a truly meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Carmen, I am sorry to learn of your state's triple insanity. The red states and red wannabees want the fools of the Trump ilk, but also want the government to help out in disasters while they malign and try to over turn our democracy. Republicans don't want anyone to get government help of any kind, except for the tax breaks and amnesties for them and their rich white corporations. How is it "real Americans" as they would like to be called can't see that. They want to blame Democrats for all their woes, while voting for Republicans who have contributed significantly to causing their woes or leaving them unaddressed. It makes no sense to me.

Expand full comment

Barbara Jo, you are right about those triple-threat states: gov, and both houses; Gov., sec. of state, A.?G. We really do need to target those states because the people there have been gerrymandered so much, the people have given up on voting for qualified people who will actually represent them rather than Trump and Kump that thrives only on power and money.

Expand full comment

Ruth, Your concerns are spot-on. I simply would add, given this term’s high-stakes Supreme Court case involving gerrymandering (Merrill v. Milligan), that 22 could be our last shot at mitigating one-party rule, particularly in battleground states that unduly affect our national elections.

Expand full comment

Please share which states you refer to

Expand full comment

Cara, My awareness extends mainly to states where I am active. For example, New Hampshire (next-door), while considered a battleground state, is controlled entirely by Republicans. Additionally, gubernatorial races in such swing states as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Arizona are critical because the GOP in those states controls both state houses. Among those states, I believe Michigan has the best shot at flipping at least one of its state houses. Speaking of state houses, because The States Project, which Reich mentioned, provides support for state legislatures the project believes can flip, it likely would be a helpful source.

Regrettably, because I’m not at home and don’t have my notebooks, I hesitate to continue for fear of passing incorrect information. However, as I have done, you can google various battleground states and get the requisite data.

Harry, I am with you. No Republican will get my vote for the foreseeable future. None in my judgement will be guaranteed to stand up for our democracy against the insanity of the Trumpers and Trumpettes who have already gotten far too much media coverage when they have so little to offer anyone. The coverage should have been pointing out the ways they are undermining our democracy, even for those "real Americans" in the middle of the country and the racist white folks in the Confederacy. Republicans fulfill those folks' need to fear and hate someone, but do nothing to solve or even attempt to solve the problems those folks constantly whine about: farm prices, no hospitals close by, not enough money to buy necessities, no medical insurance, worn-out land, and on and on. How do we shake that crowd up and get them to see sense and vote with sense?

Expand full comment

Ruth, agreed. But as for shaking that crowd up—basically not possible, since they are immune to facts, only pay attention to far-right (I won’t use the term “conservative,” since that hasn’t really applied in years) sources and have adopted that belief system as their identity.

Expand full comment

Arnold, I like your phrase that a vote against 'them' is a vote for our democracy." That might catch a few and get them to actually consider their Trump and Kump membership, possibly to reject it.

Expand full comment

There is no probability that Trump and his ilk can "dissolve our democracy." What they could do is invalidate fair elections, or submit fraudulent results. That would be very, very serious if it occurred, and it is quite possible that it could occur.

The question then is, what of it if so? If as have the Democrats through the last 40 years the majority in this country simply rolls over and lets themselves be robbed, knowing that elections were stolen, well . . . that would be deserved, then. We face a real problem: with Democrats rightfully condemning insurrectionary attempts to overturn a fair and free American election what would be the appropriate course if such an election WAS succuessfully suborned? Sue? The SCOTUS already stole one election for their preferred candidate, you can figure how that would go---and the Democrats did _nothing_ then. What I am implying is do-notings and doing nothing will not be acceptable courses if Rump's cronies falsify election returns; in any state, or in the nation effectively as a whole result. 'Something' would have to be done, then. Sure, it would be better if Blue wins this election and 2024 outright and implements wide-ranging reforms roughshod over the snarling faces of the Repugnicant Congressional delegations. But what if not? Anyone who cares about democracy should best be thinking seriously about options and objectives in such an event. I mean SERIOUSLY. Not wig wag a flag and then sit at home while fascist acts are implemented similarly roughshod instead.

In 1685, James II Stuart became King of England and also King of Scotland. An absolute monarchist and pro-Catholic, as long known, he moved to implement both policy programs in England and Scotland, as long expected, feared and decried. As sovereign monarch, he had full legal power for most of those initiatives, and major traditional prerogatives for the rest: his actions were, in large effect, lawful. Except perhaps 70% of those nations were in no way accepting of either outcome. What followed was The Glorious Revolution, where the opposing elite of England called in the Dutch and the Dutch army to expel James II and put his wife, James' sister, on the throne. Which they did. There was some fighting in pro-Stuart enclaves, but his partisans---far more organized then than MAGAt America is now---were routed. James Stuart was expelled and removed, and a tacit 'English constitution' of powers and rights was hashed out by the victors, to more liberal parameters. This was a 'revolution from above,' effected not by popular elements or the poor but by the larger faction of the English and Scottish elites, in their own interests certainly but in effect in the national interests as well.

My point is not that a liberal coup be 'the way to go' if Trump claws his way to illegitimate power. But what we should reckon with and by is two fold. A) America in its own revolution and in prior trajectories of English history has a demonstrated tradition of liberal revolution against intolerable impositions, and B) that that revolutionary tradition in both respects was principally 'from above' rather than from below, though of course those initiatives are not mutually exclusive. If we do not intend to accept fascist minority rule in this country, patently against the will and interests of the majority, we had best consider what it may take to secure the continuation of existing rights and processes. Because Rump and the MAGAts, aided and abetted by the rest of the Repugnicants and their anti-Constitutional original lying Gang of Five on the SCOTUS, have demonstrated a will and intent to expunge those rights and pervert those processes. Protest alone may not be enough, voting alone may well not be enough: we may need to look to our historical basics and precedents over the next dozen years.

This is why I'm far from happy with the legalist Democrat focus on 'insurrection' as opposed to the blatantly illegal attempts of falsify the election itself. If you believe that you have rights, refuse to accept them being stolen. The MAGAts say they wuz robbed---but nobody stole _their_ rights or _their_ votes. Rather that jackboot was on the other foot. Should some of them put their boot on the public face going forward, let's not be storming the Capitol, folks. But there is no need to accept MAGAt mobocracy, SCOTUS rule by decree, or Repugnicant misrule by legislation. If you won't accept those, don't accept those, but see too what must follow from such a choice. We didn't get rid of James II or British military police state action by torts and placards or by waiting 80 years of gray misery for a totalitarian apparat to rot out. Trump lost to popular national elections by millions of votes, and would surely lose the next by similar totals if he is legally in a position to run at all. It is past time to STOP accepting that national majority vote being structurally set aside, to the loss of everyone's right. Popular rule or minority misrule: we're going to have to live out our fundamental choices there. Think about what that means for you, personally, is what I say. And it may well mean more than voting.
