Trump's next move is to incite violence and his minions will suppress the vote. Trump will not go away quietly.

Marlo - Isn’t it horrible that the Republicans are once again resorting to such horrific tactics just to get voters to vote out of a fear based on something that Doesn’t Even Exist!? Moreno, Vance and his ilk are truly disgraceful, disgusting and desperate.

Oh, and by the way I Got My “like” button BACK!! Watch out everyone because I might just get a little crazy liking a whole bunch of posts!! New iPad with the updated system seemed to be my problem.

How can I get my "like" button back, Robert?

Expand full comment

Cyrano - I apparently lost my “like” button when my iPad (a very old iPad) stopped updating passed 15.something. I can’t use my phone to read because my eyesight is for crap. I knew that there would come a time where I would have to get a new one because the only way for companies to make money is to make you get rid of a perfectly good device by refusing to update the system. For years I told my family that all I wanted for a present was gift cards so I could save them up to one day plunk down an outrageous amount of money for a device that I really didn’t need except for it to be updated/upgraded. Once I got this new one up and running I all of a sudden got my “like” abilities back.

G G has other really good ideas that have worked for them if you are on a computer or something else. G G has suggested to try switching browsers and other tidbits.

It is truly frustrating to lose your ability to like posts but I am beginning to believe that it is not a problem with just a certain substack. But I also am an idiot when it comes to technology so maybe I am completely wrong - but just know that you are not alone. ;)

Trump will never go away. Physically, yes. Spiritually, into a deep, dark hole of despair and hopelessness, because that is the way he lived. His legacy of turmoil, distrust, deception and divisiveness will live on, in fact has always been alive and ill, but will be coalesced in a segment of the population that has simmering beneath the surface, waiting for someone to lead them in their pursuit of unhappiness, and willing to follow anyone who delivers the proper siren song and is given the voice to do it.

Expand full comment

Sadly, I agree, because Trump is a symptom of the failure of our system to benefit everyone. We have to tackle the monumental task of remaking this country into the nation it COULD be, if everyone really believed in its founding principles of freedom, liberty, and justice for all, which also means economic fairness for everyone. Not this dog-eat-dog, billionaires rule and the rest of us struggle bullshit we've got now.

As for Trump himself, I think his mental derailment will continue and increase to the point of mindless babbling while his handlers unsuccessfully try and rein him in, but his legacy of violence and hate will live on. That's why I say this is going to take all of us working together to do nothing less than change the entire trajectory of this country. Otherwise, we'll be looking at Trump 2.0 once the current monster is gone.

I just had a sinking thought about the USA future after tfg loses the election. We Americans, not to exclude the rest of the world, have endured a decade of torture at this persons mouth and addled brain. The fatigue levels are building as we get closer to Election Day.

But I digress, tfg will declare his candidacy for president in 2028 the day of the inauguration. I am an old coot and a contemporary. It is hard to swallow the possibility that I might go to my grave without a days peace from that jerks mug on my nightly newscast.

You made me laugh and cry at the same time. Of course he's going to waste time and millions of dollars whining and bitching that the election was stolen--again. MAYBE someone will be able to shut him down so we don't have to go on that pointless road trip.

Once he runs out of steam on that front, I'm sure he'll start campaigning for 2028. You're absolutely right; he can't step out of the spotlight. It's disheartening and infuriating. President Biden could cure cancer, President Harris could broker a lasting peace in the Middle East, and Trump could fart. What will the media spend its time covering?

I am as sick of his big mouth and his incessant presence as you are. As President Obama said, he has not stopped whining and complaining about his problems since he came down his golden escalator nine years ago.

He's in every news feed, on every front page, on every website. Unfortunately, he will probably live to be 100. Fortunately, his brain hasn't got that long to go, and maybe when he's medicated in a room somewhere he will finally STFU.

Karla and all: I wonder what would happen if, for whatever reason, Mr. Trump did stop campaigning, either now or he didn't announce for '28. Are there not others who would still promote views that he held in common with them? What is the general effect of his craziness on the entire Republican party? Take him out of the equation and what is there? I doubt it would be a void. The party has a lot of work to do to recover, but there are planks to their platform (Plan 2025).

I could see a split in the Republican Party with nearly equal percentages wanting to bring back the party of 25-30 years ago and the other half (promoted by the super rich) want to do more by utilizing JD Vance. The Heritage Foundation didn't take them this far only to pack up and go home.

Need to start by reigning in the Supreme Court who enabled all the dark money flooding our electoral system and it would help if we had a different election system then the 2 party, first past the poll, winner take all system. It literally denies almost 1/2 the country representation. Ranked choice voting would help a lot and would have prevented a few bad Republicans, who only won based on electoral college, which is outdated and no longer necessary, except to get republicans into the White House and that's it. Last 3 republicans elected President won electoral college but not the popular vote and we're paying dealy for that.

It is necessary not to just talk about what is being done but also about what the trajectory leads to. What will be next if it is difficult to vote? What will follow banned books and poorly educated citizens? What follows saying that migrants are vile creatures that steal pets to eat them?

The time to speak about the next steps is when we see the road that leads to them. Now is the time to talk about the mass deportations and purges and camps that an authoritarian will give us. If the candidate dehumanizes and promises retribution and deportations we need to take it seriously and make clear how deadly dangerous this will be for everyone, even those on the same side as the authoritarian.

There is plenty of history for reference. Roundups, deportations and purges are not done with care. No one is safe. Is there a neighbor or co-worker who might turn you in? There will be no one to go to and appeal that a mistake was made. The danger is around the corner. Let’s describe it now that we see it.

That was quite a lot of information in the Coffee Klatch today! From the debate all the way to getting in trouble because Professor Reich found humor in his height! For the record, Professor Reich, Fox News is an entertainment channel and is only suppose to entertain people per their Dominion lawsuit. I never pay any attention to what they have to say. I found your jokes funny! Now, for the debate, Kamala Harris kicked the old man's butt, period. Enough said. I truly believe if Kamala agrees to a debate on Fox, Mayor Pete needs to work with her extensively because he absolutely knows how to confuse and irritate those idiots on Fox. I understand what you are saying about "the establishment" backing Kamala when talking about Swift and other prominent celebrities. What I would like to say about that is think back to when you were in your 20s and 30s. Everything you did was so very important. These kids are beginning to get their feet wet in politics so to speak. They are suddenly finding their voice and Taylor Swift and these other celebrities are showing them how to use it. It is a huge force. These kids grew up with diversity, equality and inclusion so they are much, much closer to not considering a person's skin color to determine if they like them. As Martin Luther King extolled in his "I Have a Dream" speech, he looked forward to the day when his children would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. He would be happy with our young people today. These young people are not falling for the orange man and his running mate's misogyny, intimidation, lying, bullying and threats. They are listening to a younger woman's voice and saying, "That's what we want." It isn't just celebrities. Look at the Tennessee Three and how they stood up and were heard. Look at the Central Park Five. Granted they are much older; however, they used their voice at the DNC and the young people listened. Moms are teaching their daughters about the 50+ years we had Roe V Wade and could decide our health care for ourselves. They then explain how the orange man and his running mate want to completely take that right away from them. I truly believe our younger generation are quietly but purposefully taking the reins and I feel very secure that our future is heading in the right direction. Vote Blue, America, up and down the ballot.

As in Citizens United, and now, the bastardization of tipping ; something very different than the modest gratuity one gives for a good shoeshine or haircut. now, a gratuity could be another way for the obscenely wealthy to cheat US even more, if they get away with passing that rip off.

While I don’t imagine MAGA Republicans will succeed with their misdeeds and manipulations, presuming Trump is losing, I expect plans are well underway to try and block Harris from receiving the requisite 270 electoral votes to win the presidency. The strategy, as I understand, entails enacting voter suppression tactics, expressly in battleground states, both at the front end (vote casting) and, as warranted, at the back end (vote tabulation). The objective, I understand, is to create a level of chaos that moves the election to the Supreme Court and, ultimately, in accordance with the Constitution, to the U.S. House, wherein Republicans control more state delegations, each getting one vote.

I would note, aside from perhaps as many as 100 election attorneys already working tirelessly for fair and secured elections, Democracy Docket Founder Marc Elias repeated has asserted that everyday people also need to join in the effort by remaining mindful of electoral machinations within their respective communities.

Barbara, I agree that the entire voting process is at risk from start to finish, esp. in deep red voting districts. It would be an education for ordinary voters to visit some of these in their local area and inquire about things like proof of citizenship, voter ID, and protection of the voting place by law enforcement, and to examine the guardrails of the voting process. Be mindful that trump right now is pushing his lackeys in Congress to forestall action to reach a budget deal until his more extreme wishes of voter obstruction are met. Voters, on Monday, should you live within a red district in your state, contact your Congressional rep.

It's been clear for quite a while now that MAGA Plan A is to disrupt the election via voter suppression and state-level skulduggery (see, for example, recent goings-on in Georgia), then use the court system, up to and including the obviously supportive SCOTUS, to "win." Plan B is to foment and incite broad-scale violence and take over by force. The plain-as-day racism and fascism at the bottom of the latest example -- the atrocity being perpetrated on Haitians and Springfield OH -- may win over a few voters, but that's not its intended purpose. It's far beyond the pale of pre-election campaigning. It's clearly an incitement of stochastic terrorism in the present and a call to arms on Nov 6 in the event of an electoral loss. It won't be the last such use of the tactic we see in the next few weeks.

Even as we work hard to bring about Dem wins up and down the ticket in November at all levels of government, we refuse to acknowledge and prepare for the above at our peril.

When all else fails, we all learned from January 6 that inciting violence is Trump's last ditch effort. After this week's debate, I'm afraid Trump will pull the trigger on violence BEFORE he loses again - NOT after he loses again.

No one is talking about it yet, but there might be more swing states in a month than there are now. Contrary to popular opinion, those ballot initiatives regarding abortion, in red states like Kansas and Kentucky, demonstrated a different electorate in these states has more power than the one that usually votes.

For example, in my state of Kentucky, no party has a majority of registered voters. Just 2 years ago, Registered Republicans here, finally pulled ahead of registered Democrats by a measly couple thousand - but they are still a plurality - not a majority. I would not be surprised if red states like mine, flipped to Democrat on the presidential ticket this year. If I am correct, the candidates will hear it from pollsters and that could easily flip Trump out.

I would like to hear you and Heather discuss the horrible, terrifying, acts they have unleashed on Springfield Ohio. There is not one single word of truth in the statement of JD Vance and trumpscum. The City Manager, the Chief of Police, and the Mayor have all denied any such travesty occurring. Springfield is a small (fewer than 59,000 population) and pretty peaceful city. The Haitians - who are all documented - came there at the invitation of the city government. There have been two separate bomb threats in two days this week following trumpscums outburst Tuesday night. We live in a Country that I scarcely recognize. I sincerely hope the FBI is there to investigate the perpetrator of those emails. That individual at least can be indicted, tried and tossed into State prison.

It is a terrible thing when people can make such abominable accusations with NO EVIDENCE and not face any punishment. If We achieve a trifecta in November I sincerely hope the Congressional Branch will pass a law that no public person can make unverified accusations that lead to threats or actions against a government agency or against person or persons..

I fully support the First Amendment 99% of the time; but when persons of such public status accuse people of stealing and eating pets, with no evidence, those persons need to be indicted, tried and, if convicted, fined in the millions of dollars and jailed whether they are running for elective office or not. I'd also be happy if some of those millions of dollars were sent to the City to repay the costs involved in shutting down government buildings and schools.
