As a Midwesterner myself and from that perspective, this choice appears terrific for many reasons!

• He was born in Nebraska and graduated from Chadron State College in rural Nebraska. Not a coastal elite!

• He knows education from being a high school teacher in Manakto, MN, population 45,000. Not a beltway bro.

• He knows the military from the NCO side not the elite military academies. He was born in West Point, Nebraska, but did not attend West Point.

It's about time. Go Harris-Walz!

Represents small town America. Same genealogy as the rural population in the blue wall states.

Was a successful football coach. Coaches for Harris Walz.

Janet--if you're as unhappy with the Dems as you say here--while NOT saying that you plan to vote for Trump? Because you genuinely believe a Trump administration is going to fix the housing problem? A New York developer and a venture capitalist? Seriously? Then what are you going to DO about it? Florida has a ranked choice voting coalition. If you're not trying to solve the problem, then you're just complaining. It's tiresome. Let people be happy for a minute and feel some hope. There is obviously still a LOT to work on. The system needs to be adjusted.

It’s not all or nothing. It’s relative. Tim Walz and Kamala are great on climate and Trump and Vance want it to get worse. They are sooo bad for the environment. The Sunrise Movement was very excited about Walz. A lot of times politicians make concessions to make gains and Kamala isn’t free of such trade-offs. Affordable housing is important, and includes zoning for non-single-family homes, stipulating rent policy and stuff like that that doesn’t involve environmental encroachment.

I hear what you're saying, Janet. It is always difficult to know all that is going on "behind closed doors". Considering VP Harris's previous dealings with Dimon might have something to do with his wishing to "get on her good side". Her meeting with him does not mean she supports what he does, but changes can't be made if doors are slammed shut. Listening does not mean support.

Here's a little of the history: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/kamala-harris-went-toe-toe-223458803.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAFwWQeGfL3Qj4U3S9BnrYu3u9g0ktpYqZCizMgw1tEHo273RvfhcgXQgHdZMMI8wIi6ganSFBvFgxOtMJ32XhTqYNPuNRAaODvCaQWp2ZIgrDnkgJmahd7LnpfxMfEiy1F7CKgFsg1jF2BAP4oFVhPLcyDd4B5au7KZovSL9dx0_

From HousingWire: "In 2023, Walz signed a $1 billion housing omnibus bill into law. It marked the largest single investment in housing in the state’s history and included $200 million for downpayment assistance programs; another $200 million for housing infrastructure investments; $95 million for a program to support workforce housing; and... he allocated $45 million to the state’s Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program, which is designed to provide “emergency rental and utility assistance to families experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” He is a good man with an excellent track record in Minnesota. He will do a great job to help us with affordable housing at the federal level. He is the answer to my prayers. https://www.housingwire.com/articles/harris-vp-pick-tim-walz-stance-on-housing-issues/

Empty housing in Florida? And no wonder. Insurance companies have abandoned that state, and literally nothing can be done to make that state livable between weather, shitty politics and an outright assault on education. Much of what you’re bitching about should be laid at the feet of the greedy corporations bilking folks for every last dime, and yet you think a government can fix this. The republicans have zero incentive, and quite frankly, businesses are never going to regulate themselves.

I think that what we are doing is electing a President and, as in most of our history, we hope they will do a good job for sustained periods until they do the first totally fucked up thing and try to recover from it. This a politician and the great ones: what they did, is to keep the lid on. Starting with George. The American Revolution could have gone the way of the French Revolution. Trump came from the underlying crisis which many see as primarily due to avarice — everybody trying to be a billionaire notwithstanding nothing in particular to offer. Trump is a symptom — step back and say out loud that, given the usual imperfection in the previous Presidents: It’s okay to elect a foul-mouthed, compulsive liar who stole classified documents and may will have shown them to our enemies who he continually sucks up to verbally. Say out load that you can insult people at random — in the military, reporters, people with disabilities and in the end, serves primarily the avaricious billionaires who got us here. And serves secondarily — only because he can’t get away with everything — himself. Janet — it’s the President, a politician. That’s the choice — a politician or The Founders’ Nightmare.Did I get this wrong?

CNN really messed it up as well. They said that Walz has "no experience with the border."

BUT Minnesota has a 547 mile border with 8 border crossings.

With Canada, of course, but there are serious issues of drug imports over the Canadian border so it's not as simple as it might seem.

Expand full comment

Yep. Chinese fentanyl mules come into the U.S. from Canada. CNN ought to read DEA reports every twice in awhile.

Expand full comment

Exactly. And while Republicans are making such a big deal out of impoverished folks coming in from the Southern border, drug cartels have their own private jets and they can fly at will, any time, day or night over any border wall.

But it is so much easier to vilify people who don't have means to defend themselves against such calumny and say that they steal[?] black jobs, and accuse them of every sin and crime on the books.

FYI: the nationality of these 'mules' is 86.3% AMERICANS.

https://www.cato.org/blog/fentanyl-smuggled-us-citizens-us-citizens-not-asylum-seekers

Expand full comment

Cécile, good comment. I would bet the percentage of Americans involved in the drug trade is even greater. The cartels have to pass the drugs of to someone to get it across the border, knowing the suspicions white Americans have of people who look latinX. I bet the receivers are nearly all Americans, mostly white and probably pseudo-christian too.

Expand full comment

Absolutely. After all, who are they bringing it to: AMERICAN customers. You'd think that these folks, who claim to be so good at business and claim to know about "supply and demand" would get that: without any demand, there is no supply!

And there is another reason why they commit offenses more rarely than their American peers: imagine yourself in a country where you have to stay invisible so that "La Migra" doesn't find you. You will keep your nose clean because the consequences are that you will be thrown out and never allowed to become a citizen. Just plain common sense, but these accusers are profoundly devoid of common sense.

Expand full comment

Dr. Doug, the fact that the northern border was ignored says a lot about the reason for so many Republicans' wrath concerning the southern border and it is racism pure and simple, with a touch of xenophobia thrown in for seasoning, yet if one were to confront the haters, they would swear on their grandparents' grave they are not racist and they "love everybody." It can be pretty easy to lie to oneself as well as to lie to others.

Excuse me. I was born and bred and still live in New York City. I am far, far from an "elite." I think Walz will work out well.

Expand full comment

Many New Yorkers are far from coastal elites. But folks like JD Vance sure are. He checks the box for both coasts!

Expand full comment

Dr. Doug, and Vance was born outside of Cincinatti. You'd think he'd have a better perspective, but somehow what he picked up was just how great he is, how lazy and inept the people of Appalachia and Ohio in general are, and how easily duped the American people are. Well, it's up to us to teach him some different lessons: The American people are not stupid, stressed out, frustrated that their rights are being whittled away, but not stupid; preaching hate, fear, anger, and resentment all the time wears people out and sets them up for joy and enthusiasm like what Harris and Walls are offering; people don't like to be insulted, something Trump has been perfecting for years, but as his dementia creeps up on him, he can't even remember how to do that well; getting where Vance is now took at least as much luck as it did any talent or brilliance he might have had, that's humility and neither Trump nor Vance have it, but should.

Expand full comment

I can’t stand JD Vance. Or Trump, but JD somehow just gets me even more riled—probably his positions on women and having children and his actual disregard for anything good for children’s futures. I don’t think it’s funny though to bring dementia into things as a joke, my mom had that. It really sucks.

Expand full comment

Juliet, I too, find Vance very hard to listen too. He says not one positive thing in his presentations. And, I am not joking about dementia. My mother and aunt and grandmother all had dementia and I can see the signs of it in Trump and have for several years. He does the constant repeating things, forgetting what he is saying, mixing up words, and some other characteristics my family members experienced. I think the people around Trump know he is declining but want the power Trump wields to come their way if he should totally lose it. A difference between Trump and my family members, Trump is mean, vindictive, and unpleasant. My family members were not. For the most part, they were kind, quiet, and concerned about the people around them until the very end. I have read that one takes into dementia what one lives in their life before the dementia. Watching Donald Trump and my family members, I suspect that is true.

Expand full comment

My mom went through a phase of meanness, clawing and pinching, but she had a rare form of Parkinson’s…I don’t read into that…I think Trump just IS mean.

I meant more that Shapiro would have been better in helping balancing the ticket and in winning Pennsylvania. I think Walz is a very good person, very effective communicator. Probably the second best choice. But by picking him you are merely doubling down on what you already have. That's what the Republicans did. In regard to Trump, I believe he is an evil person that needs to be defeated . He is a danger to our country and the world. That is why I wished Shapiro been selected. I want her to win and to win she needs Pennsylvania. I like Walz.

Colleges are back in a few weeks, and there is no telling what is going to happen. The genocide continues, and having a candidate that explicitly excoriated the protesters is a gigantic risk. She needs the youth vote

Expand full comment

I recently subscribed to Nate Silver (formerly of 538), whose cohort made clear to me that though the media spectacle focuses a lot on progressive youth and their stances on Gaza, young people overall, I guess in battleground states and stuff, don’t consider this issue an important one for voting. Still, the media and social and all that stuff set a tone that is depressing and disunity-promoting and takes momentum away. I still think progressive youth vote matters

That was my thought to. However, there is a significant antisemitism streak in the US, particularly among the Arab community in Michigan because of Israel's treatment of Palestinians. Obviously, Shapiro had nothing to do with Israel's behavior but voters are not always rational.

They are a powerful antidote to the toxic Trumpism that is feverishly working to eat our souls.

I like that he wants to change our election system to the popular vote instead of the Electoral College.

Expand full comment

Good point. Only way to transition away from the Confederate States-negotiated Electoral College.

The House represents the districts, the Senate, the states. The President should represent the nation.

Expand full comment

Ms. Billie—Now, that’s great news!

Expand full comment

Changing from Electoral College to Popular Vote requires a constitutional amendment. That requires approval by 2/3rds of Congress to even be considered and then approval by 3/4ths of the states to ratify. Small states with extra Electoral allowances (Wyoming, the Dakotas for instance) are not going to approve losing their outsized electoral clout. Nor are the Senators or representatives from such states. I wish I could be more optimistic, but those pesky FACTS, dammit …

And we watched an interview or two on PBS Newshour and were tremendously impressed with Walz. He's straightforward in what he says and has done so much good - in his life and careers. This is the happiest politically I've been since 2008!

Because Trump is such a wizard at speaking about … anything. His stream of consciousness blather about boat electrocutions and sharks, or windmills with all their “fumes” that are killing everything, and the run on sentences that catapult from one non sequitur to another - English majors couldn’t diagram one of his sentences even if offered a billion dollars.

The man is functionally illiterate … who can forget when the word ORIGINS came up on the Teleprompter and he said ORANGES over and over. And Yo-SEM-ite instead of Yosemite. And at a speech in Nevada trying to convince the locals that it was really pronounced Ne-VAAHH-da. As if.

And to whom Kamala listens to for advice. Obama for one, I hear. GOOD.

Expand full comment

I am over the moon, finally , this election, my choice for Prez and VP are a reality.

The conservative former Republican, Bulwark and Lincoln Project were stomping for Josh Shapriro a conservadem, However he would have been a bad choice, because he his Jewish, and the Muslim populations, especially in Swing states, had threatened to boycott or vote against Biden because of his support for Israel.

The Muslim population of Michigan, Pennsyltucky, and Wisconsin would and could throw the election to Trump if they sat out the election. I don't see them voting for a Harris/Shapiro ticket, but I can for a Harris/Walz ticket, and Harris has taken her out of the shadow of 'Biden's Israel policy.

Democracy now has a chance.

Expand full comment

I'm a fervent Zionist and I completely agree. Walz is a brilliant choice. Beshear would remove a solid Dem from the Kentucky governor's mansion. Kelly would vacate a shaky senate seat. Walz has zero downside. I love the choice.

Expand full comment

I agree with you Robert regarding Andy Beshear - he was also excellent, but is stronger holding KY as several other governors need to stay in place and hold the line in their states. Walz is an excellent choice all around. Importantly, he has already demonstrated that he can fight - in a Midwestern pragmatic manner - for the issues effecting the majority of Americans. Walz supports practical gun control - because he has guns. Michigan is a 2nd Amendment State but after 2 mass shooting, we also had overwhelming support for practical gun control. There were gun owners on the jury that convicted the parents of the Oxford shooter.

Expand full comment

I disagree about Beshear being ok. Picking a coal-state governor would have led to more votes abstaining, or going to the Green party, as a protest. We need a huge popular vote victory, in addition to the electoral college

Thanks Robert. I totally agree, I also thought of the unintended consequences that you mentioned. I look back to similar occasions where a Democrat had been removed from office, either by death or to run for higher office, only to have the seat filled by a Republican.

Shapiro was my first choice because I felt he would deliver PA and its 19 electoral votes. That said, he had a lot of baggage, particularly the sexual harassment cover-up. Harris couldn't afford to spend half her time defending her pick. Walz was a great choice.

Expand full comment

Shapiro would have been a disaster. All those folks demonstrating all over for the Palestinians would have dropped off. I support the two-state solution and I like that Walz supports Israel's right to exist AND recognizes the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. We need people with well-rounded views.

Shapiro basically levitated into the Governor's mansion because his opponent was a complete clown, is something folks need to keep in mind.

Biden got 80, 625 more votes than Trump in 2020, there were 79,380 third party votes, total 160,005 votes that Biden did not get.

Pennysylvania has over 160,000 Muslims, who were not going to vote for Biden (and Dems) because of his support for Israel, and young black males who share that sympathy for Palestine, but are also pissed because, in their mind, Dems haven't delivered threatened to vote third party or even for Trump

Biden beat Trump by 80,000 votes, there are 149,000 Muslims in Pennyslvania who said that the weren't going to vote for Biden, hopefully Kamala is not in his shadow, Shapiro a Jew would put her in his Shadow

Philadelphia, PA and Pittsburgh are where the Democratic votes are, in between is MAGA country, and PA has earned the name Pennysyltucky

Philadelphia is minority white 34% of the population, African American is 38% about 5% Muslim.

Young black males have said that they aren't going to vote for Democrats.

So Pennsylvania, was headed towards Trump, and it is a every important Swing state with 19 electoral votes.

Expand full comment

I agree with you 💯 percent William. I was very worried about Shapiro.

Expand full comment

I just received a Bulwark newsletter, sour grapes, they said Shapiro was an asset because he was the popular governor of a Swing State, PA. Hardly popular but he did win by 56%, but Walz is also the popular governor of a Swing state, WI. So the reasoning is specious.

Expand full comment

He is the Governor of Minnesota.

Expand full comment

Thanks, even better, Minnesota is a pretty safe blue state, so there will be a special election for a new governor.

Expand full comment

No, there won’t be a special election if Gov. Walz becomes the Vice President. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan would ascend to Governor at whatever point Walz vacated his position.

He won by 56% running against an extreme MAGA. As I understand it, a significant portion of his votes were thought to be votes against his opponent rather than an endorsement of him.

Expand full comment

That's absolutely correct.

Expand full comment

Sure, but Shapiro does have a 61% approval rating today. He would have been a good pick, but there would have been blowback and expenditure of political capital. Walz was a better choice at this time.

Expand full comment

He might have carried PA, but the polls didn't include the 149,741 Muslims, and apparently not the young black males, but Shapiro would not have carried Wi and MI because of the Muslim vote.

For American Jews the Israel HAMAS war is secular, for Muslims it is religious

The Ummah is of a hive mind, Jews are not.

Swing State Muslims threaten not to vote for Biden: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/swing-state-muslim-voters-threaten-vote-against-biden-rcna122870

Black's identify with the Gazans, and have their own complaints, and have threatned to not vote for the Democrats.

Harris does not carry the Biden baggage, because of her mixed race, and she has more or less divorced herself from the Biden policy in here speeeches.

Shapiro being a Jew would cost her Muslim votes in PA, WI, MI, even MN,

Muslim population by state: https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/muslim-population-by-state

Do yourself a favor check out by how many votes Biden won in the Swing States in 2020, compare that to Muslim population

Shapiro's popularity in PA is not a guarantee that he would win PA, but it is a guarantee that he would cost the Democrats in other swing states and Swing states will decide the election.

And the deciding swing states are MI, PA, WI. GA is no longer a swing state, nor is NC because of voter suppression laws and planned activities by the Republican legislatures and the RNC.

Even Swing states are problematic because the RNC has trained 100,000 armed poll watchers, and according to Steve Bannon, they have already drawn up law suits, and will have lawyers sitting on the court house steps, and fake electors and paperwork sitting on the steps of the state capitol.

Are the Democrats equally prepared?

Uh no. Walz is MN not WI...the other northern Midwestern state!

Thanks, got that, another corrected me. I guess I will be getting a lot of corrections. I have Wisconsin on my mind, a blue state that turned red, and then was Jerry mandered and MAGAfied. The Republicans controlled the Supreme Court until the last election, then a progressive was elected, and the Republican legislature has set to neutering the government and the courts.

Shapiro is a gifted politician. His speech at the Philadelphia rally was electrifying and reminded me so much of Obama. He will be a wonderful future candidate and/or cabinet member.

But Walz is the perfect compliment in so many ways to Kamala. He's sharp, whitty, charmy, warm, has a small town common man background, and he has an impressive record of making a difference. I'm beyond thrilled. We must all throw ourselves into this fight!

Agreed! Also he comes with this added credential from my article today:

"Walz works closely with the highest ranking Native American woman elected to executive office (Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan). He will now be working with the highest ranking Black woman elected to executive office."

That is an example of a very wise man. We need more of them in prominent positions in our nation as role models for our children. The more they see, as they grow, the more it becomes natural for them to make choices in their own lives, society changes for the better.

What speeches tonight Huh? I loved the way each one of them built the other up. Shapiro, Walz, Harris. They know each other, they respect each other...They are ready to unite our country...God bless America.

I have gotten the impression that he is extremely willing to listen to the expertise of others, while using his own area of expertise (maps! geography! GIS software!) to complement what he is asking them to do. It's a perfect way to govern, because GIS software can help SO MUCH if you know how to use it, but he won't override the expert opinions of others who know their little niches better.

Jonathan, I thought Harris is Indian and Jamaican? Jamaican people do not call themselves black. I have worked with many Jamaicans and they get mighty upset when they are called black. How is Harris black? Just curious.

A perfect choice. I’m so encouraged that she is as smart as everyone thinks she is, we need it! Moved from astonishingly stupid failure to brilliant and accomplished. Thank you Kamala.

Walz across the Midwest/rust belt.

Trumps Vance-- same genealogy to contest with hyperactive collective racist subconscious. Can invoke the magic words, "not suckers or losers." Can tell SS beneficiaries "don't slit your own throat."

Knows there is no "I" in "team."

Walz loves all animals. Trump hates dogs.

But he murders animals. That does not equate with liking them.

These people smile and from their record, you know that they're not hiding a knife for your back when you turn. I wanted Walz and, by golly, that wish came true. This guy is so relatable that he'll win over a whole lot of disaffected former MAGAs and may turn a few still-MAGAs heads and have them say, "Hey, this guy's like me." I am loving this.
