Trump always lies through his teeth, yet somehow tells us what he’s going to do.

Michele2's avatar

In tonight's post, we just received our "marching" orders. We protest in really huge numbers on March 28 and we vote en masse in the midterms as if our lives depended on this. And they do.... And we must... And we continue to counter the Regime's tactics in any way we can... Reich said in his latest short video, "Please remain vigilant. Please keep those who have lost their lives in your hearts. Do not give in to cynicism. And do not give in to war fever. This is exactly what Donald Trump and his authoritarian regime want."

Johan's avatar

Reich correctly identifies the failure: rogue executive operating without democratic constraint.

There is a gap between diagnosis and remedy. Let’s try to steel-man our options:

March 28 protests, midterm voting, “hardening elections” —-these assume the mechanisms that failed to prevent the war will somehow function to end it. Systems behave according to incentive structures. Right now, the incentives reward ignoring protests, overriding elections, and consolidating power while using war as justification.

The uncomfortable question: If Congress couldn’t stop an unauthorized war, institutional guardrails couldn’t prevent school bombings turned into meme videos, NATO didn’t invoke Article 5 when member attacked, and polls showing majority opposition changed nothing…why assume marching and voting will constrain power that’s already demonstrated it operates beyond those constraints?

Not saying don’t march or vote. But recognize what you’re up against: authority that’s redesigned itself to operate without needing consent. Venezuela proved regime change without authorization faces zero consequence. Iran proves it works internationally. Each violation that goes unchecked makes the next one operational.

The pushback needs to be longer, and with an economic component.

Reich’s right about the failure. The institutions didn’t fail accidentally, they failed because people with power chose not to use it to stop Trump.

Let’s understand the incentive structures and create action.

Johan... I think more and more people absolutely realize what we are up against with this authoritarian regime. And we can give thanks, in part, to the many great independent substacks such as Heather Cox Richardson, Democracy Docket, The Contrarian, Joyce Vance, The Bulwark, Meidas +,Thinking Live with Timothy Snyder and reporting on ICE activities by Rachel Maddow and reporting on Epstein Files by Lawrence O'Donnell and Reich's substacks and videos and many more independent voices out there documenting truths...

Christine's avatar

But in all honesty, they are singing to the choir.

Those of us who care about what's happening to our country, who don't rely on main stream media anymore and vent our frustrations subscribe to those substacks. The majority of Americans don't.

A large majority get their news from X, Facebook, TikTok, FOX and the vanilla flavored main stream media. We will never change the minds of MAGA.

They will defend Trump to the death, his or theirs.

Christine.... Recent elections have shown huge swings in voters for democratic candidates from many parts of populace - many of those voters understand the economy is not working for them or they saw the deaths of Rene Good and Alex Pretti and do not want their neighbors murdered in the streets... Those voters are starting to see that Trump lies endlessly. And many of those voters are not substack readers... Trump's unpopularity has been massive.... Maga is a small percentage of the population... Authoritarians want you to lose hope and become apathetic and/or cynical... Try not to fall into that trap... The "distractions" are meant to wear us down... Let's stand strong -pushback has had a positive effect. We need to keep pushing back...

Voters need to learn why Trump and Hegseth started the war.

For decades since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian regime controlled by an Islamic theocracy was focused on attacking Israel directly and indirectly with supported by terrorist groups. In 2026, although there was no imminent threat to America, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apparently convinced Trump to start the war with Iran but there was a hidden two-part reason for Hegseth and Trump to start the war.

First part – Hegseth is a Republican Christian nationalist and Dominionist who apparently believed the Dominionist theology demanded a biblical end of times war against Iran should be launched because Iran was perceived to be a force of evil supporting objectives of the anti-Christ. Hegseth is a fanatical Dominionist and war monger.

Second part – Trump apparently reacted to a threat to his ego caused by Iran supporting the conflict in Gaza which demanded a military response to launch the war with Iran. Trump’s ego couldn’t tolerate being embarrassed by the failure of his incompetent foreign policy that couldn’t end the Israel conflict in Gaza which was supported by Iran and Iran’s other terrorist proxies including Hamas and Hezbollah.

The two-part reason was hidden largely because the news media were mostly clueless about any real reason for the war, other than thinking Trump and oil companies probably wanted to take the Iranian oil as they had wanted to take the Venezuela oil. Yes, Trump and oil companies wanted the Iranian oil just as the oil companies had wanted the oil by supporting the 1953 Iranian coup led by the CIA that that arrested the democratically elected president who had nationalized the oil industry and installed the exiled Shah who returned the nationalized oil industry to American and British corporate ownership. The 1953 coup in Iran, known as Operation Ajax, is a well-documented, watershed event in U.S.-Iran relations, where the CIA and British intelligence orchestrated the overthrow of democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh who had nationalized the oil industry taking ownership away from the British and the American oil companies. Installing the Shah in 1953 enabled a brutal dictatorship in Iran led by the Shah who enforced his dictatorship with torture. Iranians revolted with the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

American involvement in the 1979 Iranian Revolution centered on unwavering support for Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, turning the U.S. into a target for revolutionaries who viewed it as the "Great Satan". After the U.S. allowed the exiled Shah entry for medical treatment in October 1979, Iranian students seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran on November 4, initiating a 444-day hostage crisis that severely damaged U.S.-Iran relations. As mentioned, the U.S. mistake in foreign policy directly caused Democratic President Carter to lose his reelection which installed Reagan. After 1979, Iran transformed from a pro-Western monarchy under Shah Pahlavi into an anti-Western, conservative Islamic Republic led by Ayatollah Khomeini.

Republicans have caused wars in the Middle East and oil crises for decades since the 1970s by supporting Israel against the Arabs in the Middle East as Trump has now done and Nixon did by supporting Israel in the Yom Kippur War that pissed off the Arab nations (Saudi Arabia, ...) triggering the OPEC oil embargo causing the disastrous oil crisis in America in the1970s and then triggering the Iranians to seize the US Embassy in 1979 and as mentioned - causing Carter to lose the election to Reagan.

History repeats in stupid cycles driven by Republican objectives that screw Americans with wars and financial suffering with affordability including higher oil prices. Trump's attack on Venezuela was about oil not creating democracy. After the attack, Trump asked his rich oil buddies and campaign donors to invest in Venezuela and "drill baby drill" but they said the price of oil was too low and drilling was not economical. So how did Trump raise the price of oil? Start a war with Iran. The higher price would also enable Trump to make more money selling the oil he stole from Venezuela.

Democracy? Affordability? Not happening with Trump and Republicans.

Most of the comments above are made the supposition that we will have fair elections ( or any at all) and that the rallies will do anything and that we can actually stop what is happening. I am an optimist but there comes a time when we as the people must do something MORE. What? I am not sure. We are up against people that have no morals, no souls and no scruples. And most of all have billions and billions of dollars. I have been saying this for a while ( sadly) but it may come down to a civil war. In the meantime we do what we can as we slowly watch the US descend into the abyss.

Johan's avatar

Youn are hitting at it realistically. Thank you

ron's avatar

So you want civil war, don't you remember what happened when the South started down that road? I do remember the sixties, trying to get teargassed a few times, we got fucked up.

Margo Kasdan's avatar

What does this readership think about finding ways of getting huge numbers of people out on March 28? I mean canvassing, calling on friends, young people, students, groups, and getting a calling tree started; or any possibilities you all can think of? If the polling places have more voters out than ICE agents, perhaps we can overwhelm the Repub disloyal opposition.

Margaret Rivera's avatar

The answer is to continue rallies and most of all to question those people running for Congress/Senate and who are already in Congress/Senate. Vote for those who have a plan; those who will stand up for us and stand against Trump. We have those people and we know who some (at least are). We also know who are doing nothing - vote them out and replace. Trump knows that if DEMs win in mid-terms he will be impeached. So that is our Job! To Vote in people who will stand firm and get impeachment proceedings moving. Until then, write your reps - and if they aren't stnading up to them, you remind them of your voting powers. Michele2 is right - there are more people every day who are seeing trump and his admin for what they are. Even among GOP so write them too!!

Sara Stenger's avatar

The minute we throw our hands in the air and put our heads in the sand we lose. Look what our forefathers were up against. They didn't give up. More and more people are seeing the truths that Donald Trump DID tell (I will walk down the street and shoot people, I will not allow protests, I will do whatever I want without regard to the law). More and more people are beginning to open their eyes. Not everyone will. Some will hold out till their dying day, but those of us who live with open eyes and the strength and courage to change things must do our very best to make it happen. There are no guarantees, but if we do nothing, we will surely lose everything.

Margo Kasdan's avatar

It's also the enormous amount of money the Oligarchs are pouring into the elections to buy them. The people with power want the institutions to fail, those that constrain them in the slightest way. So Johan, what suggestions for action?

Christy Shaver's avatar

Yes, thank you Michele2. Showing up, staying vigilant, and participating fully in the democratic process are essential right now. Moments like this remind us that the direction of society is shaped by the courage and persistence of ordinary people.

If we can stay engaged without losing our compassion or clarity, we not only resist what is harmful—we also help move the world toward something better: a society rooted in justice, cooperation, and care for one another.

Ellen H's avatar

While millions will march on the 28th, we still have the problem of the uninformed or those who choose to bury their heads in the sand. GA had an election yesterday to fill MTG’s seat. In one of the most populous counties in metro Atlanta, less than 30,000 people voted. How do we wake these people?

Michele2's avatar

Re/ Runoff elections... "Every year about a dozen special elections like this are held to fill House seats left vacant because a lawmaker accepted another government appointment, died, or resigned as Greene did in January. These elections cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to run, turnout is typically low - about half that of previous regular election - and even lower when there is a runoff." (MSN--3/10/26)

NPR (3/10/2026) "Georgia democrats also point to a string of better than expected showings in other special elections and this one to bolster their chances in the runoff. Since the 2024 Presidential election, the party has flipped a State House race and two of the statewide Public Service Commission seats."

Mike, yes, but by now we all know that he is a corrupt criminal who does say exactly what he wants to do. doing crimes right out in the open is still criminal. the awful truth is that we have no answer, there are no remedies seemingly, to stop him, and force him to being held accountable. Or are there? is he really invincible?

Peggy Freeman's avatar

No, Laurie, he is NOT invincible! He thinks that he is and that is dangerous for him! We will prevail and whoever we send to Washington knows that all of us want him to be held accountable! He will be impeached, then he will be indicted for his crimes, tried in a court of law and sentenced, but it will not stop there. He will face the International court for the crime of murder and face judgement there as well. Once he is put away, we indict and take to court every single one of his minions that broke the laws as well.

Donald Trump has delusions of grandeur well beyond that of a King, Supreme Leader, or Dictator. He believes he is God. And not just any one religion’s God, he thinks he is The King of Kings, The God of Gods, The Supreme Being. The leader of the world.

His ego is so great, his personal delusions and deceptions so perfected, that he need not bother with humility, goodness or compassion a prerequisite of any other of humanity's Gods.

Trump teaches hate, not love, because he hates everything he sees, including himself.

His lessons are steal from your friends, swindle your elders and hate your neighbor. He covets your daughters, and sends your sons off to die in one of his wars. Trump scorches, pollutes and tries to usurp every corner of the earth.

His goal is not mere accumulation of all wealth, his goal is to be worshiped and envied in perpetuity above Jesus, or God. True saviors never ask for demand or expect such.

He demands your unearned loyalty and constant admiration under all circumstance. He needs immortal recognition vastly beyond his personal achievements, demanding the awards of others for tasks he cannot accomplish.

Ironically, Trump DOES realize he is not only mortal, but he has reached the end of his cognizant runway as do all mortals.

He actually knows he is an epicenter of distain and disrespect worldwide. He treats humanity with the same hate and disrespect he gets back from humanity. He lies to himself and his staff lies to him, reinforcing his delusions. Trump expects us all to believe his lies, because he believes them.

Trump has been played all his life by the Epstein’s, and Putin's of this world. They control Trump by catering to his numerous weaknesses and documenting his off leash actions. Then they threaten exposure to Epstein and Putin’s files that Trump's delicate ego is afraid of.

SCOTUS mistakenly gave Trump immunity, but God has not granted Tump immortality. Upon his demise or incarceration, history will set his record straight.

Let us hope America survives Trump.

Would that it happens the way you describe it, Peggy. But, unfortunately, though impeachment might happen, conviction and removal from office by the Senate is almost certainly impossible. The sad truth is that most Republican senators care more about their jobs than they do about the fate of our democracy. Their lack of courage is chilling, and threatens to bring us down, unless we find another way to check Trump’s worst impulses.

Peggy Freeman's avatar

I understand what you are saying Bacco. We must take back the House and ensure there would be two-thirds of the Senate to remove him from office. Hopefully, good republicans will be elected rather than maga republicans. I believe a lot of these republican candidates are finding out being endorsed by the orange man or claiming they are maga is not getting them the votes they need to be elected. True republicans have had enough and will either not vote or hold their nose and vote for the democrat or independent.

Laurie Blair's avatar

I like your way of thinking, Peggy! We have all the laws and should prevail against this crime machine. one by one, we need to purge our Just ICE system. there has been some pushback, and even some republicans are getting on board.

Peggy Freeman's avatar

So true, Laurie! We are getting louder and stronger each and every day. It will happen. As it is said in Amos 5:24, "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!" Truth and right will always prevail, Laurie! I believe that with all of my heart!

We must respond with a united voice: The tyranny ends this November. We will have free and fair elections because there are 250,000,000+ voters and we demand nothing less.

Here’s a running list of suggested planks for blue candidates and incumbents, amended by readers and in no particular order. It’s up to us to provide their marching orders. Otherwise, they’ll come up with their own and we know where that leads.

I’ve sent this list to my governor, congressional rep, and senators. I’ve asked them to indicate any planks that they oppose so that I’m informed when I vote but, as a disabled grandmother, I’m typically unseen and unheard and don’t expect any response other than a form letter.

So, I sent the list to DNC and I strenuously urge readers to do the same.

I asked DNC to enforce the assignments below (or come up with their own). Voters need concrete plans of action with budgets and timelines released before the election. If DNC holds a midterm convention where states present their planks and findings, it could increase voter turnout by instilling hope.

(BTW, the assignments are random. Who knew AI had a sense of humor?)

We WILL have the country that was promised 400 years ago but it will require unprecedented cooperation, like Quincy Jones got when he made “We Are The World.” He posted a sign that applies here: “check your ego at the door.” Or emigrate. 1. South Dakota: Medicare for all, including mental health, dental, and vision.

2. Delaware: Running water for all.

3. Maryland: Safe, affordable, adequate housing for all.

4. Kentucky: Climate change course correction.

5. Washington: National “Annual Yearly Progress” educational standards that apply to all students: public school, private school, home school.

6. Vermont: Nutrition and pesticides. There’s a reason why US wheat imports are banned in EU.

13. North Carolina: Child care. Montessori is Head Start in Italy. It was invented there to lift up disadvantaged children. In the US, we’ve made it a designer brand that’s unaffordable for those who need it most and for whom it was intended.

14. Arizona: Amend the 2nd amendment. Texas has more than 4000 gun deaths per year. FL takes silver with more than 3000. Together, they’re responsible for more than 17% of the 40,000 annual gun deaths in the US. The UK has 28. Not 28,000. Not 2800. 28. Their cops are unarmed. Everyone wins.

15. Oregon: FOIA restored without the loopholes.

16. Wisconsin: Enforcement of the laws, regs and court decisions that are on the books but ignored.

17. Mississippi: Abortion rights enshrinement.

18. Florida: Marriage equality enshrinement.

19. California: Infrastructure investment.

20. Nevada: Internet for all.

21. Illinois: We need to stop flushing drinking-quality water. We’re running out.

22. Tennessee: Return the Black Hills.

23. Louisiana: Reparations.

24. Michigan: Livable wages in decent working conditions, ideally in a union environment.

25. Connecticut: End citizens united.

26. Montana: Inheritance reform.

27. West Virginia: Enshrine social security.

28. North Dakota: Reform SCOTUS and court system.

29. Georgia: Campaign finance reform.

30. Alaska: Tax reform.

31. New York: Commitment to ethical conduct.

32. Ohio: Commitment to “truthfulness, transparency, and accountability.”

35. Missouri: Join ICC.

36. Maine: Restore the covenant of “good faith and fair dealing.”

37. Indiana: Term limits. Public service is not for accumulating power and influence, it’s for serving the people.

38. Utah: Mandatory service to by all citizens reaching 18 for two years in public works, AmeriCorp, National Guard, or other similar organization.

39. Alabama: Prison reform.

43.Pennsylvania: End tipping. It’s out of control and our global neighbors don’t do it.

44.Wyoming: Issue new SS numbers to each citizen now that ours have been compromised

45.Kansas: Animal Welfare Act. AKC “breed standards” require docked tails and cropped ears for some dogs. The US and Russia are among the only nations where cosmetic mutilation of dogs is legal. The Strait of Hormuz-- When playing the game of chess it's always wise to leave your Queen resting quietly next to the king until the game opens up a bit. Trump has reached the point where his queen needs to join the fray. His target, the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has a death grip on the shipments of oil leaving the Persian Gulf, where the passage narrows to just over 21 miles from shore to shore. If Trump is to maintain control over the region, during his war, he can't allow Iran to dictate policy in the Gulf. His move is an obvious one, attack the fortifications Iran has in place to control the Strait. Iran has been shopping as of late. It seems Trump's adversary has procured a quantity of China's "Carrier Killers." The new CM302 is a supersonic surface skimming missile that can attain speeds in excess of Mach 3, approximately 2,220 MPH. The Carrier Killer supports a 551 pound warhead containing nothing but high explosives, with a range of about 180 miles, as the crow flies. This type of a threat can't be allowed to exist. Iran also has over 6,000 mines they are actively deploying in the pass as we speak. The tipping point of this confrontation will be found in that narrow waterway that separates Iran from the Musandam Peninsula, the Strait of Hormuz. He has no choice. The CM302 has a 90% efficiency rating!!!

Whereabouts--China is desperately trying to control everything associated with the South China Sea. Having Iran as a friendly source of support would aid in that effort.

Donald Hodgins's avatar

Based on historical precedent and current diplomatic strategy, it is highly unlikely China would officially admit to a delivery of CM-302 missiles to Iran at this time.

Can you supply any links so that we can research this information? These kind of claims need backup.

Donald Hodgins's avatar

Kathleen--I checked with "AI," if that source is to be believed, it has some interesting info on the subject.

Kathleen Weber's avatar

Which AI and what was the prompt?

Donald Hodgins's avatar

Kathleen--Does it make a difference?

Kathleen Weber's avatar

Of course It does. I know a man who is using AI for Business Research. One of his techniques is to use the various AI platforms as a jury. If four out of five AI platforms agree he assumes they are correct. If it's less than four out of five the question needs a deeper dive. Also, the AI that I use gives references and links that that support its answers. AI is the start of the research road, not the end!

Donald Hodgins's avatar

Kathleen--Agreed----but it does add a bit of spice to the dish.

Jennifer Woodward's avatar

Donald H. Plz help out Kathlene better. Then she and I with my old BS in Computer Science degree can research what you mean. If you can't help us, please say so. Thx.

Donald Hodgins's avatar

Jennifer--I heard of the possibility of this weapon being in play so I checked with "AI" and that entity confirmed the possibility. Based on historical precedent and current diplomatic strategy, it is highly unlikely China would officially admit to a delivery of CM-302 missiles to Iran at this time.

Well, one torpedo fired off the coast of Sri Lanka just changed the face of world shipping. The choke point is that pass. Without physically controlling the coast, mine sweeping is not an option. It would be ludicrous to risk any Burke class or smaller assets in escort duties without coastal and inland control. Between a rock and a hard place. Victory disease is running rampant though.

WHY? WHY?

i read yesterday that the military has a lot of highly educated and intellectual leaders, yet they are acquiescing to THIS ABOMINATION. WHY? WHY? are they named in the epstein files too??

I also read, just a few minutes ago, that the tangerine testicle is HIDING american "war" casualties:

Yes, the horrors of this useless war continue to mount.

What's driving it all? Witkoff, (a dimwit real estate developer) is the special envoy to the Middle East and special envoy for peace missions!? He has also acted as a de facto envoy to Russian president Vladimir Putin. This idiot Witkoff is a floundering fish out of water, knows nothing about what's going on other than to inform us that he "trusts" Putin's word that Russia has not shared intelligence with Iran. Who is the real winner in this war so far? Putin. How convenient that the USA lifted sanctions on Russia at the precipitous moment when they will now be reaping the benefits of new markets, selling their oil at record profits - a much-needed infusion of cash for Putin's war chest. He may now be emboldened to move into the Balkans. Can incursions into Europe be next on his wish list?

Iran leadership is now calling your president a "pedophile". Trump needs to go, before we all pay the price for his costly, insane diversions. NATO nations (your former allies) can only sit back and watch this nightmare upfold as the USA depletes its artillery, fails Ukraine, commits war crimes, and increases the possibility of nuclear catastrophe - with no end in sight. The big picture: your country is run by "idiots" and "traitors". It's hard to tell which is which.

Trump is just a figurehead. A demagogue pied piper of the increasingly desperate working class. But in reality the useful idiot for some extremely scary rich people in the shadows.

The project 2025 mob.

The Christo-fascists who want to turn the US into a theocracy.

The tech billionaires who reject any notion of regulation or accountability for so-called AI.

The corporate monopolies that have the economy in their grip.

Crazed fanatics like Thiel who want to dismantle 250 years of progress towards something resembling democracy and for whom democratic accountability and regulation herald the coming of the antichrist (I kid you not).

The madness of King Donald is nothing compared with the madness of those around him.

A Glass-1/8th-Full Perspective's avatar

Trump's domination of all aspects of government is so thorough that our nation has been reduced to a mirror of his personality. So every flaw you loathe is born out in what gets done and to whom. All the incompetency, the shortsighted and simplistic decision making, the racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and graft have decimated America's greatness.

Neal Hugh Hurwitz's avatar

overstated--- we have had to deal with stuff before, incuding all the Reagan crap.

chris lemon's avatar

Reagan was a paragon of virtue, intellectual giant, and distinguished statesman compared to Trump. The current situation is probably the most dangerous the US has ever faced. Trump is careening from one potential catastrophe to the next. Eventually he'll do something stupid enough to provoke China, Russia, or another major power, or group of powers into a really serious strike, military or financial, against the US.

Neal Hugh Hurwitz's avatar

Nonsense--- again, overstated. And Reagan initiated the attack on the poor which has animated the Reps since then... without Gorby, Reagan is nothing good.

Didn’t someone once say, “what doesn’t kill you, will make you stronger?” During my almost 50 years of activism of one sort, or another, I have never seen an individual or a movement unite opposition so quickly and so powerfully as Trump and those that support him.

While the opposition movement is becoming quite strong, I see only a few who are able to clearly articulate the positive future and progressive society that we are working towards. We need leaders and spokes people who will not only lead us in opposition to the current despicable regime, but who can also point the way forward to the brighter future that was envisioned in the Declaration of Independence and solidified in the Constitution.

It’s like we are living in a world that is like the movie, “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”.

Jennifer Woodward's avatar

President Reagan, 1980-1988, defunded those "facilities"* ie the state in-patient mental health hospitals. There was one in Pueblo, Colorado; one in Napa, in northern California. Another in Cabrillo, in southern California.

I just had a thought--not about the current debacle directly, but about LBJ and Vietnam. There are parallels.

Yes, the hawks pushed LBJ into it. And all evidence points to them being true believers. But they were NOT the puppet masters. Those players were the same as today's oligarchs, just two generations back.

Follow the money is usually good advice, and we often hear that the Vietnam conflict was over rubber. But I have another perhaps more subtle explanation.

The story of LBJ is a true tragedy in the Greek sense for the following reason--he was a PROGRESSIVE on domestic issues. Civil Rights and ending poverty. So of course the oligarchs wanted to destroy him. What more effective way could there be then a horrific foreign war, a quagmire so unpopular it tore the country apart and cost 55,000 American deaths and countless more non-lethal casualties?

It WAS about money but on a meta level. LBJ was too powerful for a frontal assualt. So they took an indirect path. And set the stage for Nixon and then for Reagan. Trickle down economics, the race to the bottom, and finally, this current regime.

Iran is different from Vietnam in that their motives are not to destroy the man larping as president, but rather to finish off Americans as a people.

Apache's avatar

Hello Annabel... This is Netanyahu's War.... Bibi has wanted Regime Change in Iran since the '90s.... Every time that Bibi goes to DC, or Mar-a-Lago, I dread the outcome....

Rick's avatar

Kennedy was the progressive president not LBJ. And Kennedy wanted to get out of Vietnam which was a neocon position of stopping the spread of communism in southeast Asia. Kennedy also was of a mind to open relations with Cuba and the reason for his eventual assassination, relations with the Soviet Union. Kennedy gave a truly inspirational speech at the American college in June 1963. In Nov. 1963 he was murdered.

https://www.jfklibrary.org/archives/other-resources/john-f-kennedy-speeches/american-university-19630610

A fair amount of historians and political scientists now point to our deep-state shadow government, the neocons, CIA operatives in the role of his assassination.

LBJ went along after Kennedy's murder with McNamara and the neocons that cooked up the Gulf of Tonkin incident to go all in with Vietnam. Like today, this rabid ideological belief in American supremacy and military might. Unlike today, there was still conscription with the military. And the whole upheaval in college campuses and society. Conservative and liberal for/against this foolish war.

Annabel Ascher's avatar

@Rick--LBJ was an wily old Texan and a POWERFUL old school politician, but his DOMESTIC policies were progressive. Civil Rights Act of 1965. The War on Poverty. The Oligarchs of that time, and the Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex that they controlled wanted to stop all of that in its infancy.

If he had thrown off the hawks in regards to Vietnam the history would have been very different.

Do you remember the speech "I do not seek, nor will I accept, my parties nomination"? We were witnessing a broken man.

Rick's avatar

I don't disagree LBJ was what you say. But he saw what happens when the shadow power structure feels threatened from a truly progressive initiative. Maybe then his wily political sense gave in to the war mongers of McNamara and others that always infest our government.

I was in 5th grade when that November cold rainy day where I live, our teacher, Mrs. Clark announced the president had been shot. Class was dismissed. And I remember Lyndon doing his oval office announcements beginning with, "My fellow Amarkins, I come to you with a heavy heart". I know the Vietnam experience broke his presidency, and his political career because he was after all a decent man. He did some fine legacy.

But to be truly progressive, to challenge the power structure within our government over geopolitical strategy. Our history shows is fatal.

Joe Sharp (Ky)'s avatar

Joe Sharp (Ky)'s avatar

Yes. I forgot to mention that.

geo meadows's avatar

Do we really expect Trump to idly stand by and watch himself being effectively voted out of control next November? In your dreams. He'll come up with something, probably a national emergency following Iranian terrorist revenge attacks on US citizens. As you read this there will almost certainly be terrorist cells working out the details of when and where. I'm not advocating it, but the only way to get him out is with a crowbar, something like a military coup. Or maybe a mass act of ongoing civil disobedience that stops the country from working until he resigns. I don't have better answers to this unbelievably dreadful situation but please don't assume next November will see a fix to all this.

Hi Sandra, here is a link to the main No Kings organizing website. It shows all events currently registered in the USA and abroad. So far there is only one protest in England, in London. However, you can organize your own event in Manchester and register it on the website. Do you have a few friends who would join you to hold signs on a street corner, or march through the downtown area? Once you get your event registered on the website, others are bound to join you. Thank you and good luck! https://www.nokings.org/

Right on, Michael. House Dems impeached the felon twice during his first squat, but the Senate was unable to convict and remove (thanks in large part to meddling by then-Republican leader, Moscow Mitch). Two golden opportunities to rid us of the mango menace, squandered. Sadly, getting 67 votes in the Senate to convict and remove a president, as mandated in our Constitution, is nigh on impossible and has never been achieved in our history. Four impeachments of three presidents (Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump-twice); all were acquitted.
