I had the uncanny experience as I watched this hearing that I was witnessing (almost in real time) the degrading and ultimately the destruction of our inherited way of life - our happiness in our jobs, in our communities, in our American identity. Trump wanted to cling to power and in so doing, his lies have corroded our very quality of life. We must call him out.

DM, I too worry but not all the time. Paul the Apostle advised, do not worry about anything; pray about everything. Agree or disagree with Paul, you can also organize with and support Democrats, lobby those in power, vote and encourage others to vote for freedom, against tyranny.

Thank you for your comment. I share your concerns and my reaction was similar to yours. I was appalled that Trump chose to bring his quest for absolute power (and no responsibility, of course) to bear on ordinary citizens and conscientious public servants obeying their sworn oaths of office. (I might note that, for many years, I served every single election as a poll officer--as did my father before me, We poll workers also swore oaths of office, devoted our time and energies to our pre-election training sessions and an election day that ran from 7:00AM to 1:30AM of the next day. We had a single meal break of 1-1/2 hours during the day. Uniformly, we always followed all the instructions and did the best we could to ensure a smooth election and an accurate tally of the votes. So I sympathize with Ms. Moss and her mother. But I sympathize with the three elected public servants who were simply doing the duty they had sworn to do.) I believe we have to pursue this situation to the absolute end and that we as a nation agree to the rule of law and upholding the Constitution and proceed on those agreements.

Thank you, Lanae, for your poll-work service. Nobody except other poll-workers know the exhaustion of voting day. I, too, have been a poll-worker for many years. You do your very best, you work as hard as you can and as accurately as is humanly possible, and you stumble home in the dark and say "Phew! We did it." To have poll-workers slandered and threatened offends me at the deepest level.

Thanks, Lark. Me too! The idea that poll-workers would engage in scams or deception and deceit is offensive in every way possible. Being a poll-worker is a thankless (generally) task and the actual election day is grueling. You work hour after hour and generally go home in the early morning hours of the following day. I can fully understand why the poll-workers in Georgia were more than ready to call it a day after 10:30PM...most of these folks are older workers and they run out of steam...as did I after 1:00AM. I also resent the attacks on those who voted by mail...the facts are that we poll-workers were almost required to vote by mail as, for most of us, there was no way we could drive home, go to the polling place for our district, vote, and return to our workplace in the break time...it was sensible and logical to vote by mail and that was what I did (even when I lived at the polling site) and what I still do. All of us are supposedly guilty of crimes for doing our duty, we have supposedly connived and conspired to deprive a deserving Donald Trump out of his due when, in fact, we voted in a free and fair election that was remarkably free of serious contention. That's the truth and I resent the fact that the poll-workers involved have been impugned in such a blatant fashion but we are all aware that (as usual with Trump) that there is something very nefarious and deceitful behind his attacks and we all know what that insidious side to election 2020 really is.

Lanae Isaacson, I whole hardily agree that "we must pursue the guilty parties to the absolute end and that as a nation agree to the rule of law and upholding the Constitution." If we do not pursue this to the end, we will have opened the door wide for hidden traitors to go through in the very near future. Next time we may lose our democracy!

One thing I have never heard mentioned in regards to poll workers....I live in Washington state and up until we changed to mail in ballots, the election boards were always comprised of Democrats and Republicans. As a Democrat, when I took the ballot boxes to the court house for counting, I was always accompanied by a Republican. Every step of the process had a Republican board worker observing every step. Isthat not the case in other states?

Expand full comment

I cannot speak to how elections are handled in other states. But I do know this: Our poll worker teams worked through the election eve until all ballots used, unused, damaged, were accounted for in writing. Two of us (regardless of party) then drove with all the locked and sealed ballot boxes with all ballots included to the County Registrar of Voters. There always had to be two of us in a single car. This would be in the AM of the following day. We generally did not know who were Democratic and who were Republican as we were all equal on the team and, the way the thing was organized and controlled, it did not matter. (My district in the House is represented by a member of the Jan 6th Committee, Zoe Lofgren, so our district for voting is likely Democratic and there is strong support for Bernie Sanders.) But none of us could leave until the two of us returned to the site which, in my case, was the lounge in my apartment building. We had little if any impact on the actual process and tried to run it as close to instructions as possible. As I said, I quit participating because I did not feel the supervisors were following instructions to the letter but, at the same time, I understood why they chose to let my query go....we are not in a good place when it comes to democracy but we may get there if we pursue the truth to the bitter end, And it will be bitter.

Hello, Carole - I can only speak for how we approach this here in New Hampshire, and I live in a very small town. But we always have both party-affiliations present when ballots are being handled - always - a ballot clerk from each party.

What has been happening in our government is that more and more men and women of little principle, are occupying key positions within our system of government. Daniel! I served as a poll worker for many years, as I have related. The reason I stopped was simple: In the manual for training, there was a sentence or two explaining that the individual poll booths were to be occupied by a single voter and no one else. What was happening was that non-English speaking voters would arrive and invite someone else to "help" them vote...this was contrary to instructions but the supervisors and managers always looked the other way and, when I brought the issue to their attention, I was generally brushed aside. (They were afraid to take this on for fear of being accused of racism.) Most of the non-English speakers were free to bring pre-marked sample ballots with them, in which case it would have been a matter of transferring their choices to the official ballot. That would have been perfectly legal; bringing someone in to the booth to help you vote, was prohibited and, when the election supervisors would not go by the rules, I quit or rather opted out of my civic duty. The actual possibility of a poll worker participating in a scheme to interfere with the voting process was nil as it makes for a full day and there is no time to devise and carry out any kind of voter fraud based on poll worker participation. I would resent the implication but, well, Trump has made it abundantly clear that he alone lives.

As a one time teacher in Southern California and as a one time resident of Miami I have concluded that I favor the requirement of speaking the English language as a REQUIREMENT for US citizenship. Civic and cultural implications are huge. I recall Hispanics in Southern California whose only holiday observance was Cinco de Mayo. School children, influenced by their parents, did not care who George Washington was even if President's Day was a holiday. In Miami, Cubans and Hispanics feel resentment when they are asked to speak English. When, if, these citizens decide to vote does anyone believe they are concerned about community issues that unify America? We should not be surprised that voting results reflect puzzling choices and

unqualified candidates. Fact based unbiased education of citizens is a constant challenge. I am unrealistic to believe that listening to NPR or watching PBS is some kind of a cure for truth, but it might help. Allowing Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones to contaminate the airwaves with lies and vicious cultural and political division should be penalized or legally challenged. I want sensible restraints on ridiculous narrative that is poisoning America.

Even if it is effectively impossible for the Department of Justice to argue with virtual certitude that Trump's intentions constitute criminality, it can make a compelling case that, even if, despite all the evidence and despite what his family and staff told him, Trump truly, genuinely believed he won and was wronged by fraud and the vote certification process, NEVERTHELESS he is beyond all doubt totally GUILTY of resorting to unconstitutional and unethical behavior in attempting to persuade state and federal government officials to change the vote count so that he could declare himself the winner. Resorting to such means is unconstitutional and damaging to our democracy. Such means cannot be tolerated and he must be held accountable for resorting to such means, involving all sorts of pressure, intimidation, and threats, to get the result he wanted and felt to be his due. So I speak the language and understand what I have been seeing as I have watched Trump over the years. And I do not have a certificate that the APA can take away from me because I ignore their rules about publicly diagnosing famous people.

Trump has been developing Dementia in recent years, which is what often happens to people with untreated personality disorders. For many years he clearly had Narcissistic Personality Disorder AND Psychopathy, and of course he never reached out for help.

But Trump has never been stupid. I would estimate his IQ in the 125 to 135 range, perhaps a little higher, but like the typical Organized Psychopath that he is, he is completely incapable of genuine empathy but has learned over the years to fake it well enough that he can fool some people.
