All this because he destroyed the Iran treaty brokered by Obama...

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Leonor, Trump's deep racism could not let anything that Obama did, stand without a challenge. As president, Trump thought he should just pull us out of the agreement with Iran, made by diplomats who actually knew what they were doing. Trumplandia this time has no diplomats who know how to negotiate an actual "deal." For Trump a "deal" means you will do whatever I tell you to do because I am rich and have friends and you don't. That kind of bullying rarely works on the international scene.

Trump has handed the Iranians a far more potent deterrent to US and Israeli aggression than a nuclear weapon, namely control of the Strait of Hormuz. It explains why the UAE is hurrying to complete an oil pipeline to Oman's ports to avoid the Strait altogether. You are right that the US has not negotiated directly with Iran since the first failed talks attended by Kushner and Witkoff and mediated by the Omanis. Since then, both sides have just exchanged wish-lists and threats. One is inclined to be sceptical about the durability of any agreement between two parties that so distrust each other - and with good reason on both sides. Furthermore, there are rogue players no party to the agreement - Israel and Hezbollah - with itchy trigger fingers. Fingers crossed!

Timothy Cooper's avatar

Considering neither party involved can be trusted in the least, any "understanding" or "deal" is not worth the proverbial paper it's written on. The MOU being considered now is just barely a start toward a resolution. The two parties' goals are diametrically divergent and it's extremely doubtful they will ever merge at any point.

Iran doesn't need a nuclear weapon anymore, not that they have any reason to give up the project, because they can close the Strait of Hormuz at any time, bringing the world to its knees. There is no need for them to return the Strait to an international waterway status, give up control and a profit.

The world has been forever changed by Iran's taking control of the Strait, and it will never be the same again

And launched two preemptive strikes on Iran during negotiations.

All we have now is a ¨concept¨of an agreement. Was it done by one of his tweets? I’m here in the UK, and nothing has been said of a formal document. No one in Europe believes him as we have been there a total of 38 times plus. Let’s see what happens today or on Taco Tuesday.

Colin's avatar

That's what this is all about. It's a bigger foreign policy disaster than Vietnam or Iraq.

Victory at any price for Trump’s birthday yet we get to pay 300 billion just to be able to surrender to Iran. What an amazing strategy, sure to be taught at West Point for generations to come.

Russell John Netto's avatar

This has always been the reality of Trump - even as a businessman he was known for settling lawsuits rather than enduring embarrassing defeats in court. As president-elect he was ordered to shut down Trump university for fraud and to pay compensation of $25m to students, yet he claimed that this was a victory because the plaintiffs had sued him for $40m. Classic Trump BS. Nothing much has changed.

Tonight, Mike, I truly appreciate the sarcasm. I went tonight to an event billed as a concert which was mostly talk by a variety of earnest movement people who seem psychologically averse to celebrating, or having fun. It was supposed to be "counter-programming," us radical socialist antifascists having a wild & crazy time.

What a mess we’re in, Charlie. I can’t even think straight with this existentialitis so I post anything that eases the pain.

Doesn’t Project 2025 basically call for control over the curriculum at military academies?

Ian Ogard's avatar

Maybe it'll go down in history as the Mahanian Bonespur startegy.

cold, hard calculating sarcasm... my thoughts exactly... thanks, Mike.

Start a war with no strategy and no thought of how to end it and you get what Trump got, a total humiliating loss. The U S is weaker as a result - globally, militarily, and financially.

Mark Van Horne's avatar

...and the global opinion of the U.S. is at an all-time low.

... which has nothing to do with our choosing to wage (illegal) war with $ that could have paid for our U.N. dues, which are *years* behind.

Judy Sherwood's avatar

he wants to leave his mark, his legacy... he certainly has a "legacy" - blatant corruption

Will the right wing extremists supporting Trump wake up when their social security checks stop after he has bankrupted the country? He is as FAILED a president as he was casino owner.

Ahhh, you are speaking in jest, right? If I remember correctly, J. Goebbels "cyanided" himself.

Another one of Trump brilliant negotiations

He's got a real talent for Heads I lose, tails you win, negotiations.

I wonder if I can sell him a certain bridge ... on very favorable terms (to me), of course.

chris lemon's avatar

You could sell him the concept for a plan of a bridge.

Much like his fabled deal with the Taliban, ignoring the established government.

What we have here is terrorists negotiating with terrorists. What could go wrong?

It's called "The Art of the Deal" (smirk, smirk)!

The US hasn't won a war in EIGHTY YEARS - since World War II. We have had the most powerful military in the world all that time but lost anyway. Every time. American hubris has cost us hundreds of thousands of lives and massive amounts of treasure. For nothing. We never learn.

Klare K.'s avatar

The United States of ABJECT AND UNLIMITED FAILURES! A pretty terrible place to be a citizen of!

Judy Sherwood's avatar

True. What we learn from history is that we don't learn from history.

If tonights event doesn’t change minds about him; I’m not hopeful discussing policy will do anything either.

JBR's avatar

Now we have to pay Iran a fortune for an agreement that was previously free.

Klare K.'s avatar

Amazing, isn't it, the blinders Trump ALWAYS chooses to wear about what a true fuck-up he really is!

Noreen Lassandrello's avatar

Who benefits from this debacle? Russia? Israel? Or Jared Kushner? He wants to destroy the country but wants to steal every cent first.

Klare K.'s avatar

Noreen, I'd like to "like" your comment, if only it weren't all too true!

Judy Sherwood's avatar

sure as hell isn't the American taxpayers

Hans Flikkema's avatar

Robert, people who live in the area don't care who the winner is...we want the bombing to stop and normal life to resume.......

R Hodsdon's avatar

Or as close to "normal" as it gets in the Islamic Republic, lebanon, Gaza, Israel, etc.

Merlin Dorfman's avatar

Billions of dollars, thousands of lives, and untold property damage later, we are worse off than we were on February 27, and far worse than before Trump walked away from the JCPOA.

Both Trump and Netanyahu face elections this Fall, so maybe some improvement is in prospect.

TOM PAIN's avatar

Trump wanted to denuclearize Iran (just like he "denuclearized" North Korea 9 years ago).

Iran, Russia Sign $25 Billion Nuclear Cooperation Deal as Tehran ...

Jun 4, 2026 · Iran and Russia have signed a sweeping $25 billion nuclear cooperation agreement to expand Tehran’s civilian nuclear infrastructure, deepening strategic ties between the two countries …

Russell John Netto's avatar

Iran could re-start its nuclear program at any time in the future and without IAEA inspections it would be hard to know what they were doing. The genie is out of the bottle on nuclear warfare, thanks to America - still the only country to have used these terrible weapons - something they should remember when they are lecturing others on this issue. It is arguable that the US and Israeli attacks on Iran have increased the likelihood that North Korea will expand its nuclear ambitions.

From my glass half full perspective, at least now even the most pull the wool over their eyes Americans can see, he’s a lot of blarney, and less capable than those he routinely disparages—-as is true of malignant narcissists, aka fascists who manufacture problems they need rather than solve real-time problems. Our challenge now: we have to stop him from stealing the election.

As disappointed as I’ve been to discover, so many of my fellow Americans would go fascist—-and they’re out of the closet in my mind forever—-so many others are on the wheel of resistance., fighting, fighting, so those who come after us will have the freedoms we’ve enjoyed.

I would go as far as to say that EVERYTHING Trump touches is a COMPLETE AND UTTER failure. He is out there calling Plattner a "Thug". I guess it takes one to know one Donnie.

R Hodsdon's avatar

Graham Platner is the kind of blunt, bad-ass type that doubtless scares the crap out of Donny because under different circumstances, he is ideal recruiting material for Donny's own private army of thugs, aka the new ICE Agents.

Joel Parkes's avatar

No, our war with Iran is not a victory, but does anyone here think Trump's brain-dead zombie base will notice. Right now there are thousands of people on the mall in DC who drove hundreds of miles to watch a UFC cage match on the White House lawn. They'll drive home chanting, "USA, USA, USA", and feel important. That's all that matters to them.

Wait until Trump dies, as someday he must. The MAGAts won't believe the size and intensity of the party.
