Even with this, it would still be possible to get an amendment that provides for limitations on money in politics... Most Americans support such an idea, even Republicans

I am not saying you shouldn't try, But most Americans mean the electorate. That is one group, the group that could make it law, Congress and state legislatures has their own agenda.
Cutting to the chase, Three amendments democratized America. the 15th, which gave black males the right to vote, the 19th which gave women the right to vote and the 26th which gave 18 year old's the right to vote,
Do you know why the passed Congress, the Executive and State Legislatures?
Because the party in power at the time, rightly perceived them as adding more voters to the rolls. And voters that would register in the party that enfranchised them.
And BTW, congressional amendments are not subject to executive veto, federal or state.
Yes, an Amendment is very hard to achieve, especially when so many state legislators have to weigh in, (and they all depend for their seats on the support of big money)
There are Democratic Senators that are hiding behind "rebels" like Manchin and Sinema. They don't have to show themselves, because Senators Mamchin and Sinema gave them cover, and faulting Demopubs, there is the filibuster and that is why Sen Schumer doesn't want to get rid of it., nor for that fact the Republicans of old, the new class of Republicans are a different species.
Politicians enter the Congress ordinary people and after a tour they belong to a new class, with perks and pay offs benefits, prestige, connections which are parlayed into wealth, and well paying prestigious wealth generating jobs at think tanks, lobbying groups, universities, industries and even non profits.
Not bad for people with no talent except playing the public mood.

I am a cynic so take this with a grain of salt.
