This article should be required reading for every one involved with the welfare of the American people, but especially those who have some responsibility for and capability of stopping it, namely members of Congress and the Senate and the federal judiciary. What you describe is sort of a Russian dolls version of ponzi schemes, one inside of the other, but given the predilections of our so called President, a Russian theme for this enterprise is appropriate, no?

Setting aside the fact that Musk is autistic and Trump is a malignant narcissist, both lack empathy (a prerequisite for millionaires and billionaires, one only beomes rich by climbing over bodies), neither are capable of forward thinking, nor willing or able to listen to any voice that is not a confirmation of their own ideas and desires.

Thus not realizing that the path that they have set out upon, that is killing the goose that laid the golden egg, both are pursuing their own self centered goals, and as I said, killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Musk is driven by his childhood fantasy of being The Elon of Mars. His father was raised by a NAZI loving fascist, and read Wehrner von Brauns book, The Mars Project as if it were the Bible. He named his son after the Leader of Mars, the Elon.

Musk is not a genius, he is not even a savant, he was born on third base with a silver spoon in his mouth, and has used his inherited wealth to achieve power in pursuit of his real goal, to be the Elon of Mars.

He used his inherited wealth to buy Tesla, and paradoxically became wealthy because of eco liberals. I remember when you could drive around and spot a liberal because they were driving a Tesla.

He buys companies and he buys people, to build the things he using to pursue his narrow vision.

His purpose for America is to strip it of all unnecessary and extraneous activities, except those that will get him to Mars. Money spent on USAID in his mind, will be better spent on developing technology and rockets that will get him to Mars via SpaceX.

Trump's goal is simple, wealth, fame, power. I think we can agree that his vision is to be co ruler with Putin, Xi, and a Caliphate

I'm in agreement with what you're saying except for the connection between Musk's autism and his lack of empathy. Musk has no empathy because of his narcissism and consequent entitlement. Most autistic people are capable of empathy and many have hyper-empathy but often are perceived as non-empathetic because of affect and because they may express themselves in a literal way. He may indeed be autistic but he acts the way he does be he is an entitled asshole.

Expand full comment

How do we know Musk is autistic? Have we seen a doctor's report. And are we using that possible diagnosis for his loose cannonball behavior? If so, that is a complete insult to people with autism.

Expand full comment

Correction - Musk claims to be autistic as an excuse for his outrageous behavior. He is tarnishing people who actually live with autism and he should be held accountable.

Expand full comment

I agree totally - My heart is racing about this & our elected do not seem to get it or at least or not screaming loudly enough. I've been reading Dave Troy's work on BlueSky (america2.news, recently "The Four Memos", also the Wide Angle, The Washington Spectator) - The Dark Enlightenment, TechBros NX - Neo Reactionaries - Tech States; this is a HOSTILE TAKEOVER - the courts are not designed for this & too slow -- we need to intervene NOW -- IT'S ILLEGAL -- Is anyone else reading this -- this is a 5-alarm fire; we're trying to patch this mess up, putting bandaids on something we need to absolutely TAKE BACK -- Academia and everyone we can find needs to go to Congress -- storm the Capitol and EXPLAIN FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES WHAT IS GOING ON AND WHAT THE STAKES ARE. Caravans to the Capitol -- educate first and bring everyone along that we can!

If the above definition of autism were actually true, it sounds like the previous writer also suffers from it.

More importantly, Peggy, don't forget those who voted for Trump but are now feeling the effects of their mistake. They are the ones that we most need to enlist in the fight.

Too many Progressives are self-righteously proclaiming that all Trump voters are just getting what they deserve. That's not helpful.

We should be extending an empathetic hand, inviting them to join the struggle. We need every ally we can get, and there's no more committed believer than a convert.

You are absolutely right, Dennis. That's why we have to do more than file lawsuits and make speeches. You can't stop an arsonist with Temporary Restraining Orders; you have to remove him from the streets.

There's only one way to stop this out-of-control train of disasters: Impeachment

We need to lead our "leaders", and work to bring about the impeachment of the President and Vice President, as well as the removal and replacement of Speaker Mike Johnson.

Stop believing that it can never happen just because Republicans have the majority. Not every Republican Senator and Representative is MAGA. Most are actually moderates who've been too timid to act. That is changing.

Do Not Surrender In advance. The stakes are too high.

It creates “curated failure” that enables oligarchs to buy up the assets of the state and of desperate individuals for “rock-bottom prices.”

The welfare of the American people is what these people don’t want. It is expensive.

Their solution is to cut programs that make Americans healthy and live longer (cancer research, for example, Medicaid, ) so they die younger and not collect social security and Medicare benefits. It sounds crazy, but connect the dots. They want Americans to die.

Expand full comment

DK Brooklyn ; I think there is some truth to the idea that tRUMP wants to kill as many of us who will collect Social security benefits as possible. Look at what he said during The worst of Covid. His followers in red states were dying like flies as he recommended Ivermectin and bleach , for example, and told people to avoid vaccines and masking. There were reefer trucks used as portable morgues in his old neighborhood in New York City, because there was no room in the hospital morgues. In the red states, the mortality was much higher than in blue states where people were advised to follow the advice of the CDC and experts on pandemics, like Dr. Fauci. Today he still wants to jail Dr. Fauci. He places RFK jr in charge of the Health and human services agency. The man is a vaccine denier. there are already kids dying in Texas from measles, which was a rare condition thanks to vaccination programs. Polio was coming back where vaccinations were not required. American Samoa, an island, was used as an experimental site to discontinue vaccinations, and the results are that these diseases are coming back, infecting young children. Who knows how many people died when vaccines were denied or not recommended in those red states? tRUMP killed those people. He harmed and killed migrants at the Southern border, too. A young father who learned that his baby daughter was taken, and he was likely never to see her again, committed suicide. Putin kidnaps children from Ukraine, too. tRUMP is not an American who believes in Democracy nor does he honor those who fought for the freedom of humans to have self rule.

Further, we live in a surveillance state with enormous power to monitor our keystrokes, our phone calls, our faces and locations (AI augmented facial recognition). If you have a gov't issued id - drivers license, passport, etc. you are automatically in a facial recognition program. It's that simple. Organizing will very soon be impossible to do with any safety. To the far-right, Rittenhouse’s self-defense acquittal (while being too young to legally own the assault rifle he used to murder two unarmed, peaceful, legal protesters, and maim a third) was a loud shout to each Trump worshipper that killing Americans they disagree with politically would forevermore be deemed “justified”, and they seemed dedicated to giving Trump all the credit. Where the Democrats always are, fighting back in every way they can, though the voters yet again made sure that one of those ways was NOT going to be legislatively by putting Congress completely in the control of the GOP.

Democrats have held meetings they could not call oversight or hearings, because those are reserved for the majority party, but meetings that were public so the info on what is happening gets out there.

Democrats have been publicly calling on the GOP to join them in votes to stop this cr@p that is going down -like Jeffries describing a piece of legislation they have put together and having a press conference talking about it and calling on "just three of the House republicans" to join them in voting aye. And THAT is ALL that they can do. Don't yell at them for the voters' stupidity in hogtying them. Get people to call their GOP MOCs nonstop, every day, telling them to GD oin in those votes.

I’ll tell you why I’m not out in the streets…yet. There’s ice and snow in our streets in the Midwest. But I’ve been taking part in the boycotts and have signed up to participate in a march at the end of the month.

Also, I was having a long conversation with my sister last night about what to do if the economy goes into freefall. We’re both on Social Security and have modest retirement accounts. If the stock market fails, banks close, and we no longer get SS, any or all of those things, how will we live? What will happen to our families? Will Trump destroy farming with his tariffs and deportations? Will there be food shortages? How bad could it get, and how can we protect ourselves, our family, our friends and neighbors?

When the Great Depression happened in the 30s, did people know it was coming?

I’m going to do everything I can to prevent the national financial crisis I see us headed for at the hands of Trump and Musk, but I want to have a plan if things go south. I’m pretty sure we aren’t the only people thinking along these lines.

Expand full comment

Although I’m now in the northeast, I lived in the Midwest for a long time and I understand about the snow and ice. If (or is it when) we lose SS, if or when the banks collapse, I have no idea what I will do, what my children will do. I wish I had a plan.

I can't help reflecting on my own experience: how did Mom and Dad install a "new" house in the woods without a safe wood-burning heat stove? I always thought, well, if I got truly snowed in and the gas ran out, I could get back to the old pioneer place and start up the old stove. But I'm too old to figure on that now. But heating with wood would be my first thought.

Expand full comment

I wish I could say you can come to my house and live since currently I got 8 acres to grow food on and I know how to do it after 47 years of doing it. Except I’m 82, still shucking’ in wood to keep warm in the winter and since my husband died I can’t do it alone. It gives me real pause to have to divest myself of this place at a time like this but take heart, there are cooperative ways of survival and I think in times like this you know who your friends are. On Social Security- well I get this too and I feel like I hold my breath every month to see if it’s there in my bank account. Since it’s automated Must so far as I know has not monkeyed with it yet. So far Trump is after Medicaid. -which Steve Bannon ( of all people!) has advised Trump not to do since a wide swath of Trumpers are recipients of that program. There is a move on to deluge the White House with postcards mailed March 15. Your choice of statements on the front of the cards. I chewed out My senator - a Democrat- in an email yesterday for appeasing Trump. Albeit that was so exhausting I had to take a nap afterwards but any avenue, any crack in the wall, any opportunity can be put into action.

Yup, my sleep habits have changed too. When I lived in Alaska in a cabin I had a wood burning stove and an outhouse. I hauled my own water and when I came home it didn't take long for that little cabin to warmup. It was a simple way of life. I always slept well from just the lifestyle. Now I'm older so it would be more challenging if everything collapsed. I do still go to a well to haul water. It's so fresh and sweet. I have a stove outside to burn yard wood but in the house I'd have to bundle up to stay warm. All this does bring appreciation for what we have now.

Professor Reich: i am astounded at how many people willingly hand over their hard-earned funds to online scam artists in exchange for worthless crypto. in view of all the freely-available information (and testimonials of those where were scammed into abject poverty) ameriKKKans are wilfully -- PROUDLY -- ignorant in pursuit of their boundless greed. i knew white men like this, in fact: they always had an "angle" or an "insider tip" on how to invest, yet they could barely afford rent on a single room in a house. if this man is any example, i'd say investing is a gambling addiction where the only thing that registers in these peoples' brain stems is the single-mined pursuit of fabulous riches, of gold, of beautiful babes, at the expense of all else. it's truly depressing that average (non-addicted) americans will end up impoverished: homeless, hungry, uneducated and without adequate healthcare.

So MUSK is saying TWO things...

1) That social security is a "PONZI SCHEME", and...

2) The world's population is dangerously declining.

Doesn't it mean "more money into soc sec now, less people to collect in the future"?

What am I missing?

That is simply musk's excuse for why SSec should be got rid of - of course they will use any pretext to do anything moneywise that benefits the plan they have to take ownership of EVERYTHING. Simply an extension of the KOCH BROTHERS long-running plan to eliminate soc sec entirely.

At the time, each of the (then both living) brothers was earning about $15,000,000 PER DAY, yet it still wasn't enough.

I guess they didn't like paying the employer match to each employee's PERSONAL SOC SEC CONTRIBUTION (something that seems not to get mentioned much by MUMP.) So for years they've been sponsoring literally HUNDREDS OF PAPERS claiming that soc sec cannot remain solvent.

All because they (apparently) think their ex-employees should spend their retirements STARVING TO DEATH.

Please explain the rationale for the cap income for paying social security taxes. Why would a person earning above $176,100. NOT be subject to social security tax?

Yes, that's true.

But what's also true is that MUSK has been going off for YEARS about the "dangers of Earth's declining population" , and claims that's the reason he has SO MANY CHILDREN, and he encourages everyone to do the same.

If he's correct (and he has been, or rare occasions) a continuing downward trend should be GREAT for soc sec., even if not for the planet. (Though not everyone agrees.

Seems to many that THE PROBLEM is too many people. (Obviously, what's bad for billionaires wanting nothing but CASH is very different from what's bad for an already overpopulated planet with declining resources.)

No doubt you're exactly right.

But I can also imagine Musk calculating the value of increasing the size of markets for his products, and weighing that against the millions of people that will have to die for his "shock and awe" to hit with maximum effectiveness.

I'd not be surprised if "Big Balls" (or some other teenager in thrall to Musk) could make a pretty accurate guess as to just how much "population decline" will still (over time) make Musk the most "richer than rich", and that number is perhaps large enough to count as "global population decrease".

So of course, Musk wants a huge market share, and at this moment in time, racism-based hatred seems to be the path to that greater market share. (Seemingly, almost no matter the "product.")

Terrifying...

Rising prices are going to be a fact that they can't ignore. So will the loss of benefits and for many so will the loss of their jobs in the federal government. Even Trump has acknowledged that his economic policies (if that's an appropriate term for his tariffs) will create a 'disturbance' that he hopes people will understand. They won't - that's his problem and you can see that intolerance at those angry town hall meetings held by Republican members of Congress that have recently gone viral. That's probably why the day after he imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico his commerce secretary said that they wouldn't last long and that a deal with both countries would be forthcoming and insisted there would be no pause in the application of tariffs until that transpired. Yet today, the administration announced the tariffs would be paused for American automakers. Trump pays attention to the markets and on both occasions they have reacted badly to his threatened tariffs. To add to this, his policy has now twice been called 'dumb' in editorials in the Wall Street Journal. None of this will impact his loyal base but believe me it will infuence him.

The Constitution expressly states in the the third clause of the 14th Amendment that those who broke an oath of office to the constitution by engaging in rebellion are disqualified from holding further office unless Congress exempt them by a two-thirds vote. This has not happened. The Supreme Court kicked this issue back to Congress when it considered Colorado’s high court ruling that it was not self effectuating. Congress needed to act. Why aren’t we pushing Congress to act??

The text: “Section 3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. When they take away the money that we worked all our life for and healthcare to give a tax break to the top 1% who don’t need it and don’t pay taxes as it is, we WILL take our country back and believe me, these billionaires will be jumping on their jets to get the hell out of here. This isn’t a game they’re playing. I don’t know how Republicans don’t see that if they do the right thing, it’s possible for some to get re-elected but being afraid of a primary??? Makes no sense because they will lose to the primary and the primary will lose to the Democrat running against them. It’s mind boggling what’s going on.

Sal,

I can truly appreciate your passion! (And I seriously doubt, at least in these discussions, that I stand alone.) Care for a little more ammo?

(I apologize if you've seen this before, but each day presents a largely new audience, eager to explore any and all new "realities".)

I've been asking this question online for several years now, and I've yet to receive what turns out to be a correct response. (And few people have even ventured guesses.)

Can anyone come up with...

1) ANY legislation the GOP has either proposed or supported...

2) For the purpose of helping middle-income, working-class Americans...

3) Within the past 75 years.

Simple, right?

The only example I'm aware of is the Americans With Disabilities Act (ACA). The GOP didn't present it, but neither did they fight it. One would think this reality about who makes up much of their base might have some impact currently.

We can hope, I suppose.

The Dems have enough laws fitting all these criteria to fill pages (ACA, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act(OOPS!) unemployment insurance, FEMA, etc.) And in every case, the laws to help middle-income, working-class Americans were fought tooth and nail by the GOP.

Any thoughts, Sal?

Dee,

Just came across this...

"Veterans Fired From Federal Jobs Say They Feel Betrayed, Including Some Who Voted For Trump"

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/bc-us-trump-doge-fired-veterans-betrayed_n_67c9af61e4b07a45b4c32f83

You know, if someone were cynical enough...

It just MIGHT seem as though for some reason (perhaps such as anger over being successfully ridiculed over his fake bone-spurs since youth(?)) Donnie seems absolutely OBSESSED with what might best be described as a commitment to CRUELTY toward people (both living and dead) who are/were dedicated to protecting America from foreign enemies. Almost as if THE KILLER WAIL wanted to be considered single-handedly responsible for crippling America's military readiness...

Hmm. Once again I ask a question SO STUPID that answers itself before I even finish typing. Could this be a sign of something?

(A bit wordy, but maybe a 2 or 3-person "sign"? Sorry, Dee, not getting much sleep...)

The whole of the western world now operates under the guise of a giant Ponzi scheme, while it's as much endemic to my country as it is to the US, with this being part of that natural progression that which is the now post-neoliberal project, with this being expressive of the real 'trickle down' as that pertains to the revised social stratification which has been consequential to the oligarch revolution. Fight on America, and this while taking inspiration from the epic struggle which was Michelangelo's life further to today being the 550th anniversary of his birth, while we must, all together, overcome!

More real than his last lie? His next lie?

It is NOT transgender mice. It is, in reality, trans genic mice. They are altering their genetics and using them to experiment with treatments for Altheimer's, cancer, and heart disease research. trump is simply so amazingly stupid that he hears "trans" and thinks it MUST be sexual.

Mark,

I understand, and I apologize for not providing appropriate clarity.

To me, my post was ONLY about this apparent "tell" from Trump. That for some reason, he wished to place a greater...emphasis(?) on the "truth" of this lie.

I can't but wonder what makes this lie "special" in Trump's mind (for lack of a better term than "mind".)

I'll attempt to express myself more clearly in future.

Thanks, Mark.

Can we please start a citizen's initiative to impeach Trump and JD now?(1)

Why a Citizens' initiative to impeach? Well, for one thing, our Democratic leadership seems intent on doing nothing outside of ineffective hand-waving and low-key tut-tutting. For another, I don't see anywhere in the Constitution that says Citizens can't impeach a sitting president.

On what grounds should such a thing be required, you ask?

Lemme see, they're working hard for one of our biggest adversaries (Putin), breached numerous security firewalls protecting highly sensitive personal information, usurped the legislative branch's powers (funding allocation), vindictively and illegally fIred highly trained professional civil servants who skills are essential, bankrupting the federal government by refusing to pass just and equitable taxation to protect the solvenc and credit of the US, and in many other ways great and small, acted to destroy the federal government in contravention of the Constitution, law and long-standing precedent.

Moving to impeach now, even if Republicans manage to block such a move, would at least set the stage for impeaching the entire Republican caucus at some future date for their failure to remove Trump and JD when called on to do so with such overwhelming evidence of their high crimes and misdemeanors.

I am well aware that Speaker Johnson would be next in line for the Presidency if the Don and JD get removed from office, but I believe he is as desirous of attaining the Presidency as any normal politician, and would cooperate in the impeachment if that were to be the obvious result. Should Johnson prove equally perfidious as Don and JD, he 'd face removal by the same route.

(1) (I like two-fers, very economical)

Citizens can not impeach but we might help move others to do so.

Isn't a declining population the BEST POSSIBLE NEWS for future soc sec recipients?

Doesn't it mean "more money into soc sec now, less people to collect in the future"?

Let's not forget the horrible "GET RICH AS F*#K QUICK" plan of another Texan, around 1980.

Bunker Hunt decided it would be FUN to PHYSICALLY POSSESS a huge % of the world's silver. It did NOT end well...

--------------------------------------------

"On March 27, 1980—a date that became known as "Silver Thursday"—the Hunt brothers finally missed a margin call and the market plunged; silver led the way, dropping to under $11 from its high of $50.42.

The Aftermath of the Hunts' Plan

Government officials considered a bailout to prevent systemic chaos. The action was vetoed, however, because the government agencies didn't want to be seen as underwriting dangerous financial speculation. In the end, the Hunt name held true, and the brothers arranged a private bailout from a consortium of banks and companies.

The Hunts were dragged in front of Congress, scolded, charged with manipulation, fined, fined again, and forced into bankruptcy. It took nearly a decade for them to unwind all their silver holdings and satisfy creditors, and the final bill left them billions poorer—although still wealthy by most standards.

I fear it's entirely possible that the ONLY GOOD that will come of this (for us at least) is when Musk's DEMAND that he possess all the MONEY in the world conflicts with the Putin/Trump DEMAND for all the POWER in the world..

That may actually border on the new definition of "fun", as Trump bounces back and forth...
