They want Trump to win because long term that's what helps them. They are not even trying to hide its one-sidedness at this point. They got Trump elected before and they are trying to do it again, with a lot of help from extremely wealthy owners. They'll help democracy burn for share price. Media has become no different than anyone else with too much money and influence.

They can stage fake WWF battles while actually helping each other profit!

It's up to us now to fight back with our numbers. VOTE!

JP said: " Media has become no different than anyone else with too much money and influence."

Do some google and you will find that the media is owned and/or controlled by billionaires like Larry Fink, Brian L Roberts, Robert Iger, Ochs Sulzberg family, Redstone Family, Newhouse Family, Jeff Bezos, and even the institutions which own the majority of investments are owned and controlled by these families

The majority institutional investors of the media are Blackrock, Vanguard and State Street Group.. Institutions are run by CEO's, CEO's are hired by Boards of Directors, Chairman of the Board, represents the largest investors, which often are other corporations, and often CEO's, Chairman and Largest individual investors are the same.

The one billionaire who towers above all the othe4rss in terms of influence is Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and other libertarian, racist outlets. How come you forgot to mention him, William?

Expand full comment

Actually Vic, Murdoch is a given, anyone who who is anyone on the left Knows Murdochs name, but how many know the names of Robert Iger, Brian L Roberts, Larry Fink, the Newhouses, Redstones, even the Ochs Sulsbergs.

Because I am a publicist for Rupert Vic, when I am not letting him fuck me in the butt.

Expand full comment

It occurs to me that big mass media outfits are like other large corporate entities. They have recurring meetings at the top, where they discuss all things business among all their VP's. How to stay afloat, how to improve the next quarterly report to stock holders, report outs on various to-do's, all associated with running a successful business and keeping it successful or making it more successful. They do news, and rely on viewers. That is how TV and newspapers work. And Trump is a gold mine of news. He is a phenom unlike any other - quite literally a bigotted ignorant dangerous idiot that once ran the country and is poised to do so again. A guy with a cult following. That is news. And has been for long enough to be a direct factor in the profit margins of these news media corporations. It should come as no surprise to us who understand a bit about unfettered capitalism that what is reported and what is expressed on opinion pages is affected at least a little by the corporate word come down from on high as to how to handle the Trump effect. If Trump goes away, like we all hope he does, what does that mean for corporate news media? If politics in this nation becomes measureably more civil and rational, how will that affect them? I for one would be watching or reading less news, and doing things more productive.

So one might wonder how much of the Trump effect is sustained and fed by our news media itself. For the sake of the bottom line. The quarterly report. I tell you - that is not healthy for the country at large. This guy and the movement he has helped create is on the verge of ruining our democracy, and the heart and soul of the nation. It doesn't take a genious to see that. Yet our system of relatively unfettered capitalism, coupled with a poorly educated gullible public, has given this cancer life. And BTW just as it has given life to continued climate denialism in the face of ever stronger evidence that we are ruining our climate, and unless some miracle occurs, has sealed the fate of our future generations to a harsh and dystopian world. Media both-siderism along with sheer neglect has allowed that to happen.

A Harris/Walz win along with taking both sides of the legislative branch will go a long way towards correcting these egregious wrongs. Not completely of course, but a good start and a good continuation of what Biden has begun.

At the risk of sounding pollyanna-ish, what if the media were to have to operate under the following rule, for every story that is submitted for approval and publication that talks of murder, mayhem, blaming, bloodshed, negative slurs, violence, imminent doom, catastrophe, and controversy, it had to have a counterbalancing story of something positive, successful, heartwarming, peace-making, generosity, and helping others to submit and publish as well?

Outrage is something to be noted in opinion pieces. Facts are what's to be noted in the news pages. You'll note that the Washington Post put Trump's attack on Liz Cheney prominently on its webfront and outlined Cheney's response quickly in its story. The mainline news still tends to stick with the old-line balancing of quotes way too much, and I do see opinions sneaking in to some of their stories, which an old-line editor like me would've have takemn out. But The NYTimes pretty aggressively and effectively blasted Trump on its front pages over the last week or so. Owners like Bezos and the LATimes guy (I always manage to misspell his name) aren't journalists. The people in the newsroom are and they're working in an impossible suttaiuon with Trump; every day -- sometimes may times a day -- there's something to be outraged about.

PowerCorrupts: On a scale of 1-10, I would give this comment a 9. The statistic I would add to make it a 10 is it has been estimated that at least 70,000 people die in the US every year that wouldn't if we had an NHS.UK healthcare system. That's more people every year than have died in Gaza this past year. The scale of these deaths is staggering, yet they are scattered throughout the country and are grieved one at a time by each family without news coverage.

If civilization endures the challenges of climate change, future historians will undoubtedly condemn our inhumane, profit-driven healthcare system. They will view it with the same abhorrence we reserve for the historical atrocities of slavery and the slaughter of Native Americans. Maybe we can't accept the horror of what our system of democratic capitalism has imposed on the people. We want to believe we are exceptional in history and in the world. Madison's insistence on keeping it was one of the reasons Mason refused to sign.

It's clear to most people, except for those 6 on the Supreme Court, that the Presidency has accrued too much power over the past decades (see for example Califano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xkc039_YNsg&ab_channel=FacetheNation )

I think that proportional representation (PR) is a better electoral system than first-past-the-post (FPTP) because FPTP cancels out all voices that didn't vote for the candidate who won a plurality, but not a majority of votes.
