The incentives are scattered, the risks are individualized, and the legal architecture is built to keep collective action rare.
If something like a general strike were to emerge here, it wouldn’t look like Europe. It would likely take the form of sector‑based walkouts, coordinated slowdowns, and local coalitions that create pressure points which accumulate into national impact. It’s less a single dramatic moment and more a distributed pattern of refusal.
I’m still thinking through what that could realistically look like—-the structure is complicated; but the leverage wouldn’t come from uniformity. It would come from synchronized friction across multiple systems at once.
So I’m assuming these systems would have to coordinate at the high-level.
You asked for other ideas. What worked for me is simple but not easy: cancel all social media except substack. Now, I choose what information comes my way instead of having it flung at me. It stings, just like cancelling amazon stung, but that passes. And when it does, there is less noise. At least for me.
I've done the same thing! I used to be a CNN junkie ... 14 hours a day with the TV on. Today, I have cancelled MSN (Mainstream News) except for the NY Times (See their coverage of ICE murdering Alex Pretti today. They're using language now that they would not have used even a few months ago.)
I go to Substack first. I see posts about significant news events there well before MSN mentions it. (If they ever do.)

Suppose Americans selected several specific corporations to target with boycotts, account cancellations, etc. Maybe one social media company, one streaming company, one snack food producer.
Stop buying the corporation's products, or one overpriced streaming service. Close a social media account. If you don't really need unlimited data on your cell phone, change your account to the lowest priced tier.
It won't be easy to take from ourselves to hurt their bottom lines. But it would be easier to go for these, many of which are (or likely will be) sources of propaganda, than for companies that provide necessities like food or medicine or banking.
We don't all have to go for the same targets. Just pick one. If enough people pick one streaming service or social media company to quit we can get their attention. The stock market squeals if any big corporation's profits drop 2-3%.
Take Tiktok. Seriously, take TIktok and flush it. It was just effectively purchased by 3 US oligarchs in a deal engineered by the Trump administration. They will turn it into something you won't recognize. And you won't even notice the transition because it won't happen overnight. Dump it now, before they've had a chance to X-ify it.
Through massive deregulation over the years, corporate structures have become almost unassailable. They're so huge. They've absorbed so many smaller companies that simply boycotting a company like Starbucks doesn't make the owner corporation blink. So pick companies that will actually feel the ding. They will notice. A 3% drop in value will give them the screaming willies.
- Stop eating at fast food restaurants that are replacing humans with robots.
- If you can stand it, and have time for it, make a point of checking out with the human cashier at the grocery store instead of using the self-checkout line. (If you think about it, at the self-checkout you are doing for free the work of another human that used to be paid. And on top of that the stupid thing yells at you if you aren't fast enough. Who needs that? Pfft.) And while you're checking out with the human, exchange some pleasantries with them. It's a tough job. Make it more pleasant. Give them a smile.

We need a general strike, but what does shutting down the economy for a day or a week do? The solidarity is nice, and it feels better to be doing something other than being angry and/or scared at home, but it mostly feels impotent. Trump's not reading the signs and is using the protests as an excuse to ratchet up the tension. People spend the money getting ready for it, or afterwards. People living paycheck to paycheck will be the ones most hurt.
I think it should be a general strike on paying federal taxes. If we all withhold $0 dollars until trumps gone, the government gets more expensive. Put that money aside with the hope that he's gone by next tax season, but with the understanding that if he's still there, we will have to pay the penalties. As much as they've gutted the IRS, they'd have a hard time coming after millions of people not paying. 25 million people not paying taxes would start to hurt quite a bit.
I've been suggesting a "parallel government" a defined, even if holding no official power, organized structure with the features of government to present itself as the opposition, the organized Resistance. Identify leaders, hold daily press conferences - ideally held at the same time as Leavitt's Hour of Lies to "the media" - hold regular, frequent "Breaking News" reports with detailed accounts of how much the Trump regime is costing us, where the money goes, how it's being used and not used, who is benefiting from every thing they do; in other words, report, investigate, report, follow the money, hold accountable with words and reports, STAND FOR SOMETHING and act as if we, the "parallel government" is the REAL government in contrast to the criminal mob that has declared power and authority over everything, as if simply declaring something, naming something, makes it so. Call out the lies on a regular basis. Don't just say, "they are lying." Detail the lies. Detail the corruption, the graft, the sadistic cruelty underlying everything they are doing. Sit at a replica desk of the Resolute Desk with flags behind - but no "gold" junk - and REPORT. Act AS IF we have power and authority and call out the lies. Begin each "press conference" with a showing of Trump's poll numbers. End each presentation with a reading from "1984." And more to the point, his own sister who became a Federal judge (and resigned as some kind of wrong-doing about her was making the news) told their brother's daughter, niece Mary Trump, that various kinds of cheating occurred with Don's "education" - recall is fuzzy but seems it involved paying others to take college tests for him. In the first term there was also a professor who said he was the worst student he had ever had. Although Thump liked to make his oafish blustery demands about what Obama or Biden and others must produce for him, like their college records or health records and the like, he has never shown his college aptitude scores or college grades or high school (aka military/reform school) standing (or tax records or health records or financial records....)
I wish there were some way to require that colleges and universities rescind degrees/diplomas from those whose activities are thoroughly antithetical to the meaning of those degrees. Examples: the Yale/Harvard Law School graduates, "lawyers." who blatently and brazenly violate THE LAW, who are traitors to the Constitution/i.e. the country; names like Cotton or Hawley or Barr or Cruz or Bondi or Blanche, et al, come to mind. Or, say, someone who has no educational credential like an MBA (I say that with a grain of salt) or a highly educated economist overriding experts and educated economists to foment the economic collapse of a nation should have even their undergraduate degree rescinded.

Do you mean Indivisible? There are several groups under that umbrella term of "No Kings" but I think Indivisible was the primary organization behind it. They are still active. You might look for them by organization name online.
There are also MoveOn, Public Citizen, Democracy Docket and numerous other groups. Indivisible advocates "stepping up" and forming your own local groups and they offer supporting information for doing that.
Inspired by the monks walk for peace, which I know almost nothing except that it exists, there should be an on-going protest moving past the White House and Congress building. It could be organized to start in a park nearby, have a set route, and those inclined would show up at the start, carry signs, walk the route peacefully, then dissipate while others would take their place. If enough protestors joined, this march could go on for days. A steady stream of Americans, humanity, protesting and petitioning the government peacefully, even at times silently. People could, would, come from all over the country to march once, twice, ten times. Stay a few days if you could. Would you come?

Video and reporting show that this was not a split-second mistake. It looks like deliberate government violence carried out by armed federal agents who swarmed him and killed him when they discovered he was carrying a concealed gun - lawfully per his government-issued permit to do so.

I have empathy for your pain and conflicting emotions. I like the idea of a nationwide general strike. There are exceptions like healthcare. Those who would suffer are not those who enable these monsters. It is those who are sick who would suffer. Routine visits yes, but those who need critical care should have it available.

People stood up when Black Lives Matter, why should we not stand up because every life matters and we don't know who will be next and there will be more if we don't take a stand now. Let's put that sign in the window that Mark Carney referred to, about everyone uniting. It takes guts to do that, but are we all going to lie down gutless and do nothing? In Minneapolis they are boycotting Target, Home Depot, Enterprise, Delta and Hilton for ICE complicity. Some are making reservations at Hilton and then canceling at the last minute hoping to reduce the number of rooms available for ICE. The same strategy might work for Enterprise and Delta.
This is a cautionary tale about what happens when lies become the coin of the realm and ignorance is its conduit. We didn't get here overnight -- it crept up on the unaware over decades. Excuse me for saying that it is way past "enough" -- it is way past anything any reasonable person can possibly justify, way too much. A general strike is definitely in order. Stop it all now. I have a theory that I call "the gravel pit" to explain why NEARLY all of the members of Congress are as crooked as a dog's hind leg.
A pile of gravel that has been screened will contain ONLY rocks that are smaller than the screen size. Any rocks that are bigger drop off the bottom of the screen. In the same way, all kinds of 'first time' people run for elective office. Some are corrupt, many are not. But un-corrupted people tend to lose while people who compromise and take the money tend to win. After several successful wins, only the corrupt survive the process.
It's not that politics corrupts people. They were corrupt to begin with. Politics just selects them so they float to the top like the really big chunks in a sewer.
This is not to say that EVERYBODY who holds a high elective office is corrupt. Consider Barack Obama. As an effective candidate at the state level in Illinois, he agreed to be the "sacrifice candidate" in a senate election that he was almost certain to lose to the wealthy, connected, white Republican Jack Ryan. But his beautiful actress wife, Jeri Ryan (Star Trek's 'Seven of Nine' character) had sued for divorce before that and the Chicago Tribune was able to get the divorce proceedings made public. It turned out that Jack wanted Jeri to participate in sex clubs in places like Paris. Jeri declined. Jack dropped out of the race just a few days after that and the Republicans imported a right-wing talk show host from Pennsylvania with only months to go before the election.
Obama thumped him like a drum in the general election. Obama was an accidental president. It was like there was a hole in the gravel screen.
I'm a particular fan of that section of the Republic that discusses the "Allegory of the Cave" since it discusses how our understanding of the universe is limited by our limited view of it. But I don't see my "Gravel Pit Theory" in any of the themes raised by Plato's Republic. Perhaps you could help me find it there.

I remember my parents' sacrifice during WWII during these days of turmoil snd challenge to our hard won democracy. My Dad, Richard, served on Tinian, the island in the Marianas from which the bombers flew to Japan in the U.S. Army Air Corps - before it became the Air Force. Tinian was the biggest air base in the world at the time. Mildred, his wife and my mother was @ home in NYC, working to support herself and her widowed mother. Dad sent home his pay for them. I am thankful they are not alive to witness what is happening now. Honoring them as members of the Greatest Generation is a large reason I am active in protests and helping the local immigrant community. Each generation must recommit to our democracy. I did in the 60s, canvassing for Eugene McCarthy and protesting the Vietnam War. "To every season.... " As Franklin said - if we can keep it. We will.

Mark Carney received a standing ovation at Davos, which is unheard of. You can trust that conversations are going on with European out of the eyes and ears of the American dictator. A general strike in the U.S. is hard to imagine in the classic sense because the labor landscape was intentionally fragmented over decades. There’s no centralized union structure, no shared bargaining framework, and no cultural muscle memory for coordinated stoppages. The incentives are scattered, the risks are individualized, and the legal architecture is built to keep collective action rare.
If something like a general strike were to emerge here, it wouldn’t look like Europe. It would likely take the form of sector‑based walkouts, coordinated slowdowns, and local coalitions that create pressure points which accumulate into national impact. It’s less a single dramatic moment and more a distributed pattern of refusal.
I’m still thinking through what that could realistically look like—-the structure is complicated; but the leverage wouldn’t come from uniformity. It would come from synchronized friction across multiple systems at once.
So I’m assuming these systems would have to coordinate at the high-level.

You asked for other ideas. What worked for me is simple but not easy: cancel all social media except substack. Now, I choose what information comes my way instead of having it flung at me. It stings, just like cancelling amazon stung, but that passes. And when it does, there is less noise. At least for me.
I've done the same thing! I used to be a CNN junkie ... 14 hours a day with the TV on. Today, I have cancelled MSN (Mainstream News) except for the NY Times (See their coverage of ICE murdering Alex Pretti today. They're using language now that they would not have used even a few months ago.)
I go to Substack first. I see posts about significant news events there well before MSN mentions it. (If they ever do.)
(But I worry because a lot of the billionaire royalty -- for example, Andreessen Horowitz -- are heavy investors. It's difficult to see the little green man behind the curtain in today's predatory capitalism and feudalism.)
Same. And I am boycotting just about everything 😁. Seriously, we buy absolutely nothing we don’t need, and then, if possible, not made in corporate media. No big anything. Buy books at local, family owned bookstores, no fancy restaurants ( luckily spouse is a fabulous cook). Luckily, cars (not American) and appliances are in good working order.

Suppose Americans selected several specific corporations to target with boycotts, account cancellations, etc. Maybe one social media company, one streaming company, one snack food producer.
Stop buying the corporation's products, or one overpriced streaming service. Close a social media account. If you don't really need unlimited data on your cell phone, change your account to the lowest priced tier.
It won't be easy to take from ourselves to hurt their bottom lines. But it would be easier to go for these, many of which are (or likely will be) sources of propaganda, than for companies that provide necessities like food or medicine or banking.
We don't all have to go for the same targets. Just pick one. If enough people pick one streaming service or social media company to quit we can get their attention. The stock market squeals if any big corporation's profits drop 2-3%.
Take Tiktok. Seriously, take TIktok and flush it. It was just effectively purchased by 3 US oligarchs in a deal engineered by the Trump administration. They will turn it into something you won't recognize. And you won't even notice the transition because it won't happen overnight. Dump it now, before they've had a chance to X-ify it.
Through massive deregulation over the years, corporate structures have become almost unassailable. They're so huge. They've absorbed so many smaller companies that simply boycotting a company like Starbucks doesn't make the owner corporation blink. So pick companies that will actually feel the ding. They will notice. A 3% drop in value will give them the screaming willies.
Other options:
- Stop eating at fast food restaurants that are replacing humans with robots.
- If you can stand it, and have time for it, make a point of checking out with the human cashier at the grocery store instead of using the self-checkout line. (If you think about it, at the self-checkout you are doing for free the work of another human that used to be paid. And on top of that the stupid thing yells at you if you aren't fast enough. Who needs that? Pfft.) And while you're checking out with the human, exchange some pleasantries with them. It's a tough job. Make it more pleasant. Give them a smile.
- When you find out that a business you deal with is bragging about replacing entry level jobs with AI, find a business to deal with that employs humans.
The most important thing with all this is consistency.

We need a general strike, but what does shutting down the economy for a day or a week do? The solidarity is nice, and it feels better to be doing something other than being angry and/or scared at home, but it mostly feels impotent. Trump's not reading the signs and is using the protests as an excuse to ratchet up the tension. People spend the money getting ready for it, or afterwards. People living paycheck to paycheck will be the ones most hurt.
I think it should be a general strike on paying federal taxes. If we all withhold $0 dollars until trumps gone, the government gets more expensive. Put that money aside with the hope that he's gone by next tax season, but with the understanding that if he's still there, we will have to pay the penalties. As much as they've gutted the IRS, they'd have a hard time coming after millions of people not paying. 25 million people not paying taxes would start to hurt quite a bit.
People would need to order necessities, and the delivery people would be put at risk.
I've been suggesting a "parallel government" a defined, even if holding no official power, organized structure with the features of government to present itself as the opposition, the organized Resistance. Identify leaders, hold daily press conferences - ideally held at the same time as Leavitt's Hour of Lies to "the media" - hold regular, frequent "Breaking News" reports with detailed accounts of how much the Trump regime is costing us, where the money goes, how it's being used and not used, who is benefiting from every thing they do; in other words, report, investigate, report, follow the money, hold accountable with words and reports, STAND FOR SOMETHING and act as if we, the "parallel government" is the REAL government in contrast to the criminal mob that has declared power and authority over everything, as if simply declaring something, naming something, makes it so. Call out the lies on a regular basis. Don't just say, "they are lying." Detail the lies. Detail the corruption, the graft, the sadistic cruelty underlying everything they are doing. Sit at a replica desk of the Resolute Desk with flags behind - but no "gold" junk - and REPORT. Act AS IF we have power and authority and call out the lies. Begin each "press conference" with a showing of Trump's poll numbers. End each presentation with a reading from "1984." BE the government by ACTING AS IF we ARE the government; in other words, co-opt the Trump world of "Alice in Wonderland" with a reversion to some simulacrum of normal U.S. government. I wish there were some way to require that colleges and universities rescind degrees/diplomas from those whose activities are thoroughly antithetical to the meaning of those degrees. Inspired by the monks walk for peace, which I know almost nothing except that it exists, there should be an on-going protest moving past the White House and Congress building. It could be organized to start in a park nearby, have a set route, and those inclined would show up at the start, carry signs, walk the route peacefully, then dissipate while others would take their place. If enough protestors joined, this march could go on for days. A steady stream of Americans, humanity, protesting and petitioning the government peacefully, even at times silently. People could, would, come from all over the country to march once, twice, ten times. Stay a few days if you could. Would you come?

Video and reporting show that this was not a split-second mistake. It looks like deliberate government violence carried out by armed federal agents who swarmed him and killed him when they discovered he was carrying a concealed gun - lawfully per his government-issued permit to do so.

People like Alex Petti should not die at all, and they certainly should not die in vain. People stood up when Black Lives Matter, why should we not stand up because every life matters and we don't know who will be next and there will be more if we don't take a stand now. Let's put that sign in the window that Mark Carney referred to, about everyone uniting. It takes guts to do that, but are we all going to lie down gutless and do nothing? In Minneapolis they are boycotting Target, Home Depot, Enterprise, Delta and Hilton for ICE complicity. Some are making reservations at Hilton and then canceling at the last minute hoping to reduce the number of rooms available for ICE. The same strategy might work for Enterprise and Delta.
Noticed these companies are finally responding to the boycott by asking for a deescalation, so it is working!

This is a cautionary tale about what happens when lies become the coin of the realm and ignorance is its conduit. We didn't get here overnight -- it crept up on the unaware over decades. I have a theory that I call "the gravel pit" to explain why NEARLY all of the members of Congress are as crooked as a dog's hind leg.
A pile of gravel that has been screened will contain ONLY rocks that are smaller than the screen size. Any rocks that are bigger drop off the bottom of the screen. In the same way, all kinds of 'first time' people run for elective office. Some are corrupt, many are not. But un-corrupted people tend to lose while people who compromise and take the money tend to win. After several successful wins, only the corrupt survive the process.
It's not that politics corrupts people. They were corrupt to begin with. Politics just selects them so they float to the top like the really big chunks in a sewer.
This is not to say that EVERYBODY who holds a high elective office is corrupt. Consider Barack Obama. As an effective candidate at the state level in Illinois, he agreed to be the "sacrifice candidate" in a senate election that he was almost certain to lose to the wealthy, connected, white Republican Jack Ryan. But his beautiful actress wife, Jeri Ryan (Star Trek's 'Seven of Nine' character) had sued for divorce before that and the Chicago Tribune was able to get the divorce proceedings made public. It turned out that Jack wanted Jeri to participate in sex clubs in places like Paris. Jeri declined. Jack dropped out of the race just a few days after that and the Republicans imported a right-wing talk show host from Pennsylvania with only months to go before the election.

I desperately hope enough Americans will say "Enough" and do something about it ASAP. I'm just afraid they won't. So many speak blithely about "the next election" as if there is no doubt that there will be one. So many speak about a Blue Wave and a Democratic Congress that will rein Trump in, as if he and his stormtroopers care about Congress, or the Constitution, or legality.

How many laws have been broken? How many attacks have occurred against our democratic government? How many more will be committed? There must be accountability.
I would guess VERY FEW of the readers here know about the Bondi offer to Walz.
This indicates that ICE/CBP are not there for any legitimate security purpose. It becomes a critical fact if and when Trump decides to declare an insurrection.
