Assuming Biden has nothing to hide, then if Democrats play this well, it will finally destroy the Republican party.

70% of Americans want higher taxes on the wealthy and on corporations, 70% of Americans want universal healthcare, 70% of Americans want tighter gun controls, 70% of Americans support a woman's right to choose. We are the large majority. We are strong.

For once, let the DNC eschew their corporate sponsors and put forth a platform that appeals to the dog and not the tail, and we will win in a landslide.

Innocent people wlll voluntarily take a lie detector test. Learned this from my ol' pappy, a lifetime prosecutor.

I am a former defense attorney. I would NEVER voluntarily take a lie detector test. Too much depends on the questioner’s skill and the emotional makeup of the subject; if I’m telling the truth but worried whether I’m forgetting something or not admitting something that no one asked me about, I suspect there’s a high risk of failing the test.

Expand full comment

To me, the real test is whether your client IS WILLING to prove innocence.

What you miss is that you, as defense attorney, could have had your clients tested privately, rather than have the prosecution do it. Higher risk of a false negative than a false positive. Many cases are nol prossed on the basis of tests.

I was a judge for 30 years. You have no (0.00) clue.

Demeanor evidence is statisically valid. Departments of psychology offer degrees in forensic psychology. https://www.apa.org/ed/graduate/specialize/forensic#:~:text=Forensic%20psychology%20is%20a%20specialty,the%20judicial%20and%20legal%20systems.

The FBI and the school at Conyers, Ga, traains profilers and other experts in the field.

Criminal law is mastery of the art of cross examination, starting with certain inconsistencies. The MMPI, for example, has a couple of scales that measure exaggeration. Combine that with psychoneurolgical testing and in certain areas of the law, truth may not be established, but in medical jargon, it can be ruled out, to a reaasonable degree of scientific probablity.

I always thought that the best "lie detectors" were experienced big city police detectives. Liars have a hard time remembering all their "facts". The detectives would ask the same questions over and over, and the liar's response would change a bit each time until their latest response would be significantly different from their first response. The detectives would pounce on the liar's inconsistancies.

It's because the DNC has let them, in large part because of their corporate sponsorship. Either party is OK with the oligarchs who run this country. Bill Clinton did what he was told, Obama did what he was told - even governed to the right of Richard Nixon. Hillary would have done what she was told. Biden isn't following the usual script, so he'll be impeached.

The polls tell a story. In 2016, Sanders led Trump 70-30 in hypothetical matchups, whereas Hillary was 35-35 with 30% undecided. What did the DNC do? Why, they dumped Sanders of course. Political malpractice. Hillary went on to lose an unloseable election.

It’s because of Comey’s last minute investigation ~ right before the election ~ that she lost.

McCarthy's weak attempt to show loyalty to Trump's agenda by calling for the impeachment of President Biden reflects the need for a courtesy flush in a public rest room to help clear the air because this entire things stinks. Even the Republican party is divided over how they feel about the move. Trump instructed McCarthy to initiate impeachment proceedings in an effort to stir the pot because of the up coming election. "Put doubt in the public's mind" no matter if it fails to reflect even an ounce of truth. Kevin's butt kissing ability pleased Mr. Trump beyond all expectations. An Impeachment effort with no proof of any connection to a crime is a risky endeavor, one that doesn't kiss butts it takes large bites out of them. A quote from the movie Taken, "Good luck."

Expand full comment

I hope you're right. But which republican party - the GOP or the GQP - would be destroyed? Do you think the Grand Old Party has enough fiber to remove the GQP from power?

Expand full comment

I had to look up GQP. Now that I have, I think the GOP has become the GQP. I would like to think that destruction of the Republican party as we know it would result in a regrouping, a rebranding, and a return to a more civil discourse between the two parties such as existed up until Reagan.

The other possibility, which I think is farfetched, is that we could revisit the Constitution and in particular the institution of President. As far as I can tell, the President is basically a modified version of King George III. In retrospect, it was a mistake, although the framers couldn't have known it at the time, since all the great powers in 1787 had a King. The President has the following kingly powers: 1) The power of veto, 2) The power to raise armies for 60 days without consent, a power George III used to start the American War, and which JFK used to invade Vietnam, 3) The power of Executive Privilege and 4) The power to pardon anyone, including your criminal friends.

This is no accident. Indeed, the only difference between George III and the US President is that the latter has to be elected, and can only serve two terms. The British went on to Disneyfy their royal family, which thereby became vestigial, but Americans are stuck with the institution. Just as George III overstepped his powers and made rash decisions, so have numerous presidents, most notoriously the guy with the orange combover.

It would be so nice to have a representative parliamentary democracy in the US, such as is enjoyed by Canada, the UK, and the Scandinavian countries, but we have to play the hand we have been dealt, and must work to ensure that Trump never again sets foot in the Oval Office.

This means we must recognize that at least 30% of Americans are Q-crazy and will vote for Trump even if he is put in jail, and 70% of us are rational. We can live with that.

That DOJ opinion is still binding on the DOJ, meaning that without that House vote that McCarthy promised and then promptly reneged on(because he didn't have enough GOP votes) to approve his "inquiry", as a practical matter, there is no viable mechanism available to the House to enforce any Committee subpoenas for witness testimony, documents, etc.. In a recent interview with Jen Psaki of MSNBC, Buck said now is not the time to impeach Biden.

Kevin McCarthy hasn’t worn a set of balls for as long as I can remember. Initially a bogus Impeachment would be throwing a bone to the Far Right Whackjob contingent of the GOP, but as the real story of what Trump’s minions did on January 6th and subsequent crusades becomes more and more visible & , and as the useless spinning of wheels in service of politics rather than policy becomes ever more obvious, obviously more destructive ... and as the Far Right’s antics & bad political theatre become ever more irritating .... the attraction will wear off.

At some point - and yes I once believed that it would “sooner” than it obviously will be - the middle of the country will have HAD ENOUGH of posturing, toddler temper tantrums & “Political Theatre” ... and step back into some semblance of sanity and a desire for productive legislation & governance that will create real, positive & beneficial change.

We have a serious problem with our Economy, and it’s not Biden failing to do what the Whack Jobs on the Right are demanding, but rather that which we are not yet doing, and of what the 1% is terrified will happen, i.e. a comprehensive and JUST redesign of our tax codes - federal & state. We need to begin to tax the 1% on how games they play and how their “income” really works, i.e. they borrow against their stock portfolios, and therefore never need to cash out those portfolios, and therefore ... never incur any tax obligations on the “income” on which they are living ... quite remarkably well I would say?

And to the weak bleatings of “persecution,” and “unfair,” and “etc.,” and I call B.S. I would say ... well “Pound Sand?” There are alternative ways in which to phrase my message back to the Uber Rich in which I attempt to convey my (limited) sympathy, but I will try to remember my late mother’s wish that I speak more like a Lady ... and just go with “Pound Sand.”

Time for a Radical Redesign of our tax codes to generate the the money that we need to reconfigure our Productive Economy, and make our tax codes FAIR to all citizens of this country. This strategy worked for Republicans in 2004 against John Kerry and again in 2016 against Hillary Clinton; we can fully expect them to play it out now. Particularly if Democrats once again respond by trying to ignore it and wrongly assume people will realize how absurd it is.
