'Tis the season to remind that the Trump family charity stole from kids with cancer and disabled veterans. Santa needs help carrying enough coal....according to Santa, the amount depends on how bad those Trumps have been. Needs a train.

And don't forget to have a great Kwansa, Saturn's Day, Babaalu's saint's day and most especially the feast of the circumcision when the minion held a reception at the brith. Kiss 2023 bye bye. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aN4QpL1_GE

You are funny though I know you didn’t intend it to be. We are all angry with Trump and his supporters.

Did you see that Ivanka and Jared went to give the people support in Gaza?

~ Copycats of Diana ~ To deflect the fact that Jared was paid off (billions) by the Crown Prince for his father-in-law (Trump) not investigating him for the death and dismemberment of journalist, JAMAL KHASHOGGI.

WHY isn’t the House investigating Jared?? Write your representatives, contact the media and DEMAND they do so!

Actually, it’s not just Americans who worry about the USA.

And from Germany, it sure looks like a playbook we‘ve seen before.

Americans can never again attribute Germany’s fascist period to some defect in its national character. Our Trump Moment amply illustrates that the United States is susceptible to the same insanity.

Wars seldom end with peace treaties. They are often followed by more wars and even genocide. What the USA did with Germany and Japan after WW II was highly unusual and truly amazing. Both countries became free and prosperous with US help. We ought to be able to accomplish at home what we accomplished abroad.

Mythical narratives are driving the problem here. People who have >absolutely no idea< what came down in those dark days have bought into heroic nonsense about it to avoid the guilt they bear for and justify the excesses they were and continue to be party to here. They like that "Übermensch" feeling they get from believing they're some kind of half-assed master race. Bad news. Bigotry is egalitarian, as well.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all who have been so supportive of the thoughts and traditions that drive our Democracy. As long as the spark that you represent brings warmth to the hearts of our people, we stand a chance. God Bless and thanks Robert for being a giant among men.

So true, Donald. Robert Reich has the biggest and most generous heart of any public figure I can think of today. He’s the true definition of a Mensch.

You too, Donald.

Definitely a giant among men. Did you know Robert Reich was a Rhodes Scholar as well? I just recently learned that from Wikipedia when I was quoting him trying to “educate” a staunch Republican on Nextdoor.com (in a National political group).

Yes, and this idea of a superior man is seen in all sorts of things: he has to eat meat, have guns and say they are ready to use them at the drop of a hat, wrap themselves in the flag, be ready to offend before being offended, try to "own the libs", and of course, they cannot be gay. when they say jokes, those jokes have to be offensive to anything that is not white and male and 'Christian', at least what their version of Christianity is, really a heresy. This hyper [and fake] masculinity is seriously toxic.

Now that the Pope himself will allow same sex marriages, what will be their rationale for hating LGBTQs?

These KKK types never had any use for Catholics or the Pope or anyone else who was not born white male and Protestant!

Same thing in France: My sister is wondering what the hell is happening in this country. My niece, a Catholic nun sees the hatred of some Americans against LGBTQ and is also wondering: what the hell is happening here. How can Republicans think they are patriots when they hate some Americans? It is hard to love a country when you hate its people.

And rightly so. We must strive to do much better. The good we have done in Gaza is hugely insufficient. And we MUST continue to support Ukraine for the sake of her people and of her many neighbors.

Expand full comment

indeed. I see both Ukraine and Israel as the bulwarks that protect our way of life. We must support them more. The problem is: Germany doesn't have enough military equipment anymore. For a long time, people hoped for disarmament and now that we have done it, because "we are surrounded by friends", which is a famous quote by a former German defense minister in the 90s, it's wrong. Unfortunately, we need weapons and ammunition to defend our liberal western democracies.

I used to be supportive of Isreal but they are killing SOOOO many innocent people, come on, get better of what you doing.

Expand full comment

Hamas killed innocent people and knew what the response would be like. For Israel it is a matter of self defense to make sure that Hamas won't be able to fire rockets into Israel or try an invasion again.

Yes, too many people get killed. But as soon as Hamas stops the war on Israel, the killing will be over.

I’m supporting Israel

not that Bungler BB Netanyahu he is trying to bomb his way in to office.

Killing innocent civilians is creating future terrorist, so it appears at his goal is forever War to stay in power. Kind of Like Putin keep the focus off them and start stupid wars.

Netanyahu Killed his own hostages because he on an revenge kick not a save anybody his troops are shooting first and asking questions last they were just three more “ Palestinians they gonna have to kill sooner or later anyway”

No Trigger control just shoot everyone and see what happens.

2,000 pound bombs are in discriminate weapons by design.

Expand full comment

It's a literal genocide of the Palestinian people and their culture. 20,000 dead. Mosques, medical schools, hospitals, grammar schools all destroyed. Who knows how many orphans created? How many children dead or maimed? Now they are starving and cold. Sickness and more death are coming. The hostages don't matter. In fact three were killed by the IDF. Anyone supporting this is delusional and heartless. Their obvious goal is the erasure of what's left of Palestine so they can take their land and their natural gas. Many acknowledge that this is the goal. They're destroying as many people and as much infrastructure as they can get away with every day. Open your eyes. They are the chosen people in their own minds only. Bless those rabbis and other Jewish folks who are speaking out against this horror and against Zionism.

Expand full comment

it's not a genocide. It's terrible that so many people are dying, but please look up the definition of genocide. Genocide is what Hamas wants to achieve.

Expand full comment

The ongoing carpet bombing of Palestine is an inhumane tragedy but also a political mistake by Netanyahu. It is important to bear in mind that not everyone living in Israel and not every individual within the Judaic faith supports or is carrying out this self destructive genocide, lest we lose our shared humanity. The actual culprits are not a people but individuals on all ‘sides’ with names and faces who must be held to account for crimes against humanity.

If it were up to me, I'd vote for Dr. Reich to become a "National Treasure" and not post mortem, and begin the search for artists to make at the very least a statue or a name a national building, park (not a wilderness, for has surely led us out of the wilderness). I hereby cast the 1st vote...

Robert Reich you are a gift to all the decent Americans who value inclusivity and diversity. It is my holiday wish that some of the numb far right find it in their hearts to embrace the decency of an America for anyone who seeks it's haven. Blessings from Jamaica.

In the beginning you said our dominant religion doesn't define America. At the end you said it's our common morality that binds us. Many people don't separate religion and morality, especially those who didn't go to college. They get their morality from their religion. I think empathy, learning to walk a mile in "their" shoes (anyone's) is important. Not sympathy, but empathy. And education is supremely important! It has always been the road out of poverty.

Expand full comment

Many of the religious right believe non-believers have no moral compass. As an atheist, I think my moral compass is stronger than many of those who claim to be Christian.

Expand full comment

Without getting into questions of belief or non-belief, it's also fair to say (and philosophers do say it) that when you're talking about morality you should, in their words, “throw God out of the window”. What they mean is that your morality should be independent of your beliefs. If you're doing something for a reward (in this case presumably getting a pass through the pearly gates) then maybe that's why you've done it. If you've done it without thought for reward then that's where the morality kicks in, regardless of whether you believe or not.

It amuses me that some of those judgemental religious right wingers believe in the prosperity gospel. Presumably their moral compass can be summed up entirely by the filthy lucre they're hoping to gain! So yes, your moral compass is infinitely stronger than theirs. You believe in doing right purely because it's right.

Don’t remember reading about any atheists or agnostics in the history of the Inquisition or the Crusades .Hmmmm who was responsible for those lovely atrocities?

Expand full comment

Count me in that crew as well. Try suggesting to a "Christian" that they actually say that the only reason he (or she) says they are moral is their fear of the afterlife. I think many would find the heaven described in the bible rather hellish.

My mother lived through the battle of Britain and used to say that if anything were to start WW3, it would probably be religious differences. The Constitution has it right: Freedom of religion!!~ Personally I think we need a non-violent laissez-faire attitude towards people who also good and non-violent. Live and let live, if everyone can agree to it. Unfortunately that may be just a pipe dream.

Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, the longest night. After tonight, the days get longer until the June 20 solstice. We can think of today is the end of a solar cycle. We can imagine what we want for the coming solar year. We can set our goals, and mark our calendars with what to do toward those goals, every day. May it go well for all.

Expand full comment

A liittle nit picky here, my apologies, but the days don't start getting longer until Dec 25th, when (in the eyes of our ancestors) the sun stops its descent into the grave (the underworld), where it lay three days after the solstice, and arises, thus hallelujah, the promise of ever lasting life on Earth

Happy Dec 25th Dr Reich, an insprational message indeed,

Once again I feel compelled to remark that much - perhaps all - of what you write could apply equally well to the UK. But I have a lot of friends in the USA, and wish them a happy time this season, however they celebrate it. We may all hope for improvements in the conduct of public life, on both sides of the Atlantic.

We watched a "truish" movie on Netflix last evening, "The Bank of Dave" which takes place in northern U.K. Neoliberalism caused the same issues in the U.K. as in the U.S. I recommend this movie, especially for young people to help understand how the world works. Good wishes.

Looking at the synopsis things have always been like that.Thrifts in the USA ( savings and loans ),Credit unions here, non existent now.Terminating and permanent building societies in the UK,almost non existent now.

A terminating building society explains it well.Say the candlestick makers decide to fund mortgages. They all put their wages into the candlestick makers building society .One person per year is drawn out of the hat to receive that money to build a house.Repeat annually ,they can't survive

A large bank can survive.Bank of America has $1.9 trillion on deposit. They can lend that money out for mortgages. The last time I looked the large banks had $12 (?) trillion on deposit. The US system is different to the rest of the world so can have 30 year fixed mortgages,Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Still the same, the candlestick makers small bank that struggles. The huge bank where you can access the money. The large bank can operate on smaller profit margins than the small bank.

Before emigrating my grandparents lived in the north of England.Great for me and great for them that they emigrated .Great for me because it meant I could have dual nationality.

I haven't watched that film but there are 3 Ken Loach films that are a must watch.

Cathy come home from the 1960s.Then I,Daniel Blake.2015?. Then sorry we missed you 2019..

Watching things happen was strange as industry left the area. The UK was a work stop in travels around the world.

Trying to educate people financially was just as pointless in the 1970s 1980s and 1990s as it is now.

Those films are worth watching.Apart from Michael Moore died the USA not have people of that ilk?
