Hello Professor Reich,

What a thoughtful message to write to this community online! I noticed the repeated messages and figured that it was a small snafu but it was no big deal.

You keep me grounded knowing that I am not alone in my perception of all that is going on and have taught me so much by simply voicing what I couldn’t reason with in my own mind. After being isolated for two years you (and your team) have provided a lifeline to truth and transparency which is so refreshing and encouraging.

Wishing you an equally wonderful and restful weekend.

Hi Robert, You seem to me to understand very well why we're having inflation. But Jerome Powell does not seem to. He plans to raise interest rates, which you oppose. Can you explain what's going on with him?

And, I've noticed that quite a few other people also don't understand inflation and related topics, as you do. What's going on?

Dana, It's very frustrating. When we believe we have only one tool to control inflation (interest rates), the Fed feels responsible for controlling inflation by raising interest rates -- thereby harming vast numbers of people by slowing the economy, making it harder for them to afford homes or cars, making it less likely they'll get pay raises and more likely they'll lose their jobs. In fact, we have many tools -- such as antitrust laws and windfall profits taxes.

It also puts an unnecessary burden on the poor, who suddenly have to pay higher interest on things like loans and mortgages. The higher the interest rates, the less I can afford to pay down the capital on my credit card. Once again, the rich get richer at our expense, I keep hearing Tennessee Ernie Ford in my head, singing "another day older, and deeper in debt..."
