Thank you for this piece, Professor Reich; it so uplifting I cannot tell you…

In this time of rampant fear and mass shootings nearly every day so many of us are in a state of despair and need optimism more than ever. You provided a glimmer of Hope to me this morning.

Keep yourself and your loved ones healthy and safe.

America is also becoming more secular. White evangelicals are slowly decreasing in number. Most of the freedom-undermining policies and laws are defended by their advocates with ideas from a version of white evangelicalism or a type of right wing Catholicism. The group of people who do not identify with a specific church or religion is increasing. There’s an extremely strong correlation between the presence of evangelical churches and support for the death penalty, abortion bans, an absolute right to guns, and the loss of rights and freedoms for LGBTQ people in various states. I cannot say what it means--whether it means that you would not get these as political options without the megachurches. But the megachurches are always a big presence wherever they exist in large numbers and not where they do not exist in large numbers. I believe it’s very hard to predict what will happen because using Christianity and race are just one of several ploys the right has tried. If one starts to falter they may always evolve a different one to hang on to power. But we have to assume that this particular strategy is showing its age and weakness or they would not openly be jumping to destroy the democratic system.
