Unfortunately, I assume you went to press before the United States illegally attacked Venezuela.

chris lemon's avatar

Boggles the mind. By the way, in the good old days, before sanewashing, this would be called an act of war. Trump hasn't attacked Iran, this week, at least in the last few minutes, so that's something to still speculate about.

My take? Although the lie is that the invasion is about stopping illegal drugs and the apparent truth is that it's about stealing the country's natural resources outright, I think it has a far more sinister and covert purpose. It's about intimidating Canada, Mexico, all of Central and South America, Greenland, the EU, and everyone in the US that stands against what's beginning to look more and more like he's establishing his own, personal, military junta. Further, I don't think he's sufficiently competent to be the driving force behind it.

Over the years I've been here, I've recommended the movie "Mephisto," starring Klause Maria Brandauer many times. Things are now looking more and more like the scenario dramatized in the movie, which I always took to be about the role of a Ronald McReagan type character, an actor, is looking more and more like Chairman Yack-off. As I mention in an earlier discussion, I'm beginning to think that Chairman Yack-off is more like the autopen, and not the author of what are alleged to be his executive orders. I have no reason yet to believe the invasion of Venezuela is any different.

Please see my musings and wonderings, in my comment above.

Anne Barrett Swanson's avatar

For now, see the excellent videos being posted by Healther Cox Richardson, an hour or two after the US's first bombing of Venezuela.

progwoman's avatar

How would I access them?

Anne Barrett Swanson's avatar

Go to Google, type in Heather Cox Richardson YouTube

You will see many of her videos (all are good) so look for the 2 or more that date from Jan. 3 and address Venezuela.

Anne Barrett Swanson's avatar

Wow, my comment got taken down within minutes of my posting it. That scares me.

Try rearranging the comments by time posted instead of top first. It may just mean it has been bumped to a later page because other comments have gotten more likes quicker, before they had a chance to see your comment. That doesn't mean there's nothing to like about your comment. It just means the quicker you can respond the more people are likely to see and like your comment. I can't imagine why it would be removed, otherwise. I don't take you to be uncivil.

I agree, and I worry about the longest, undefended border in the world, as I am Canadian and most of us live along this border. "The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones."

Colin's avatar

Trump says he will help the opposition. How exactly? Anther fucking absurdity.

Debbie Aliya's avatar

Thank you for the reminder, which was washed out of my mind by the crime of kidnapping Maduro and his wife.

Dawn M Stergin's avatar

He is excited to cause wwlll. He gets off on mayhem. The bigger and more violent, the better.

Pamela's avatar

And no Epstein files or economy worries.

Punkette's avatar

I bet it’s on Dumpty’s to-do list, since he and Bibi just had another “strategy session” at MAL.

chris lemon's avatar

Anything is possible. The US is now run by fools.

Pamela S.'s avatar

Chris Lemon, before this attack on Venezuela, I would have said the US is run by self serving tyrants. Now I agree with you... it is being run by fools.

Only a fool would put the target of retribution on his own head and on the heads of his family. (I would not wish to be serving on the First Family's Secret Service detail)

Martha Ture's avatar

How many people will not see that Putin will now say I will go capture Zelenskyy?

Donna Maurillo's avatar

My thought exactly. China will be emboldened to attack Taiwan. Mid-term elections will be suspended "in wartime." And paratroopers will be sent to Greenland.

progwoman's avatar

Well, we have been for almost a year, but it just becomes increasingly apparent. Why else would I get up in the middle of the night to make sure nothing awful has happened?

Charlotte's avatar

the problem with pre recording. we wake up to shades of 1939, and Robert and Heather are upbeat about the new year.

Paul Cesmat's avatar

I see a much darker immediate and long range future. Never do Robert and Heather mention the surveillance state, nor acknowledge the fact that we live in a digital universe, by which i mean everthing we do is online/computerized. Banking, gov't., transportation, utilities. What happens if you don't pay your cable bill? they turn it off, right? any number of simple examples like this. consider the people who told the truth about charlie kirk, and how little protection there was for them. that was the start. notice they do it in small, tentative increments to see what they can get away with. then, once it blows over...

so it's not a very large stretch to anticipate that liberal substacks such as this one and journalism such as propublica will be turned off in the coming year. because we can't election interference, can we?

Debbie Aliya's avatar

Use cash. One small doable step if / when buying local. Embrace the inconvenience.

Paul Cesmat's avatar

that's good until the ATMs shut down. then gotta go all the way to the bank/credit union. by the way, a friend of mine had his account drained 2 days after his social security check was deposited. funny, it's not insured.

i suspect we'd better be checking our accounts often, even daily,

Pamela's avatar

What? The social security check was not insured? What are you suspecting?

Paul Cesmat's avatar

once the check is deposited in your account, the gov't's. obligation is done. what i suspect is happening, will continue to happen is that the supreme court this past june 2025 gave DOGE access to all our IRS and SS info. all of it! my conviction is that this was shortly sold on the dark web. or to any adversary state actor. I suspect it will happen more and more, and there is really no recourse as long as the terrorist organization known as the republican party is power. they will not give up that power.

Pamela's avatar

Or they round us up and they let the private prison owners make more money on us.

Paul Cesmat's avatar

well yeah, that's what the 13th amendment is for. legal slavery.

Pamela's avatar

Yeah. You mean like the slave labor that prisoners in this country are used for?

Paul Cesmat's avatar

absolutely. 13th amendment doesn't say it can't be a private contract prison. it's a very stark, brief amendment, worth reading.

if pam blondi has her way, many of us "vermin" could end up there.

I mean, what's to stop them?

Dale Greer -- Dagnar's avatar

Paul, I will add that the unscrupulous will use the 'digital age' for extortion of the innocent and easily confused to 'pay up' or get their on-line info/searches exposed~ I've gotten at least 3 of these 'new digital age Nigerian scams' which have said "I've invaded your devices and know everything you are doing on line" so pay up in X amount in Bitcoin. #1) I don't have multiple devices, #2) I really don't care at my age about this 'sh*t' getting out, #3) I won't pay in any cryptocurrency for any reason = all B S.... and #4) I don't respond in any way to these 'threats'.

Paul Cesmat's avatar

same here; i wonder who the ultimate corporate/state sponsor is of these scams. any number of techbroligarchs come to mind.

Anthony O Neill's avatar

My thoughts too, Charlotte. It’s good to feel positive feelings … but the world around us is under threat and the US Government is a.w.o.l. (that’s the kindest comment I can pass). Yours, Anthony.

These days Hegseth, the drunkard vigilante cosplaying warrior, doesn't pay much attention to the sanctity of life while committing acts of murder. Waiting for proof that Maduro and his wife are still alive.

Just seeing it........and now what?

Colin's avatar

Maduro is going to be charged in New York. Will the judge rule this out of order as the fat orange has broken International Law?

Anthony O Neill's avatar

Another chapter in Twenty first-century America’s struggle: distraction and narrow white-christian nationalism in a hellish marriage. Like Gaza/ Ukraine, Venezuela is more likely a plaything of colonialist American impulses than a recipient of support. With Trump’s Administration, there are no limits so far, so this outrageous action is likely to go unopposed. Some time, this will crash, but not for now it seems. Awful.

I disagree Chris. Those countries are taking advantage of this unqualified and incompetent president. They’re playing to his acceptance of flattery.

Keith et al., yea, with tons of gold, multi-billion $$ business deals, multimillion $$ airplanes, you name it! I wonder if T-rump is in on Netanyahu's dismissal of the 37 aid groups helping the people of Gaza, including Doctors Without Borders! On a report about this on NPR today, when they were interviewing a doctor from Medcine Sans Frontiers, there was a little boy screaming in the background who was suffering from serious burns! God, I so HATE NETANYAHU, TRUMP AND PUTIN! I WISH THE HAGUE WOULD STRING ALL OF THEM UP TOGETHER AND BE DONE WITH THEM! OR THE GUILLOTINE WILL DO!!! TAKE YOUR PICK! Attack on a resource rich neighbor in the dark of night. Sending as many people as they can to foreign gulags. Threatening NATO. Jailing dissenters. Engaging in ethnic cleansing in our own country. Sounds like Putin in 2022, mixed with Hitler and Stalin.

What American family is shivering in their sheets for fear of Venezuela?

Colin's avatar

They may be but anyone with any sense has left.

Anthony O Neill's avatar

Hi Keith and fellow commentators. The US has abducted Maduro … I offer Philips P O’ Brien’s comments on Substack to start our thoughts today. I shed no tears for Maduro but.. whatever happened to ‘self determination’? How much more difficult will it be for the Venezuelan opposition to assert legitimacy against this backdrop? Poor Venezuela, a plague (Chavismo) followed by a second plague (US colonialist intervention). Yours, Anthony.

Klare K.'s avatar

Yea, Trump was "so not the war president"!

Colin's avatar

Of course not, this a special action not war. (sic).

Hans Flikkema's avatar

WELL..America attacks Venezuela in what must be an act of war.....not different from Russia attacking Ukraine....

Mmerose's avatar

If you predicted "shock and awe" in Venezuela for New Years, I guess I'll go back and see.

Where to start? 1) My husband was in country with the Marines in Korea, retired out of the Air Force, and I am crying for the pilots who are murdering Venezuelans on not the faintest excuse of a legal order, and will live the rest of their lives with murder on their souls. 2) Words fail the shame and guilt on our elected "representatives" if they aren't mustering NOW to impeach and convict this monster Trump TODAY. Thin, thin excuse then, but at least (bad enough) some Americans believed there were WMD in Iraq. NOBODY believes Venezuela is "coming to get us." Stand up, a single constituent of a single Congressperson or Senator, raise your hand if you live in terror of Venezuela!

JudithMontreal's avatar

Canadian here: Who's next in line to have their country attacked with impunity, their resources stolen, their people/govt subjected to arbitrary rules as dictated by the demented moron and his cabal of dim-witted, blood thirsty fascists occupying the WH? The justification is flimsy; trumped-up drug threats or whatever "fabrications" they can foist off on the American people to justify what boils down to "theft" of property from vulnerable victims.

If Americans haven't been paying attention, take note: your 'former' allies are preparing for war. Denmark, already on the hit list, has beefed up their military and arms production. Ditto Canada, ditto EU. Why take chances when you realize that the USA, once an ally, is run by an unpredictable hot mess of nuts, psychopaths, and incompetents who don't fully grasp the dire consequences of their actions.

Congressal Republicans need a massive slap in the face before the situation gets completely out of control. I don't know what will wake them up at this point, but they must take back the reins of power from the trumpy thieving criminals steering your country (and ours) into an unnecessary global catastrophe, WWIII.

Pamela's avatar

I totally agree. I am not sure how we are going to get them out, but I know we need to. The Congress needs to take care of the last 3 appointees to the SC also. We need a LOT of as you say, the nuts, psychopaths, and incompetents OUT! ASAP. How? Why doesn't someone kidnap Trump and put him in jail?

Dr. Iris St. John's avatar

Couldn’t agree more! Any chance Canada will abduct Trump?

The recap on the Klatch every Saturday is such a support. Let me start with Mamdani - he is definitely a joy to listen to, I pray he succeeds. Trump’s war with Venezuela is clearly suspicious because of the oil. Iran really is absurd. Trump wants to help peaceful protesters there, but over here he asked, “ can’t I shoot them in the leg.” It gets to me that Trump is creating wars everywhere, but the one we really need to support is Ukraine. There’s something there with Putin and him? January 6 - how can anybody not see (was on TV) or forget this tragedy of treason. There was also the January 6 committee that did an excellent job. Trump should have been arrested right then - need new laws regarding this behavior. What will we see in 2026?

Anthony O Neill's avatar

Hi Diana & fellow commentators. I’d like to add another comment. Diana rightly points to the hopes and positive feelings espoused in today’s Coffee Klatch. I think the point that Robert Reich makes at around the seven minutes into the recording, about FDR’s understanding, that ‘the people’ must continue to push for the changes they want to be made, is a lesson for us today too. We need to keep up the dialogue, and direct pressure, on our political representatives beyond the elections. I’m sure I’m not alone, in feeling guilty for believing that once elected it is their civic responsibility to deliver. Trump is a sharp-ended lesson in how wrong that assumption is (even as I truly fear for the forty percent who still, in the face of all the evidence, still support Trump). Within-the-same-aisle and across-the-aisle argument is the single best way of preventing another Trump-style government. Yours, Anthony.

SWERL's avatar

I think his approval rate is more like 30% now :)

Kathy Hagar's avatar

Thank you, Dianna, for your astute observations. Only two factors drive tRump’s decisions. Will it make money for him and will it improve his ratings? He has never stopped being a reality TV personality and he’s performing as if he’s following a script for a soap opera style reality TV show. He had to do something extreme to distract from the Epstein debacle and the 5th anniversary of January 6. So, we have an illegal war. We definitely need new laws and elected officials with spines.

Anthony O Neill's avatar

Thanks Diana. Amid our excited/ depressed feelings, your comments are worth reminding ourselves of. Yours, Anthony

For weeks it’s been obvious where Trump was heading; create war (alas for the families of the murdered Venezuelan fishermen), declare martial law, as excuse for canceling elections, and start a war without input from Congress.

Bombing Caracas is a bolder step towards this dictator’s dream.

Having padded Congress and the Supreme Court with yes men, Trump acts with impunity — he’s had years to plan his dream of Dictator of Planet Earth, and it must be realized before his poor health carries him off.

Klare K.'s avatar

The Trump Regime is NOT a presidency, it is a domestic and international Terrorist Organization.

The Trump Terrorist Association moved from disappearing people, to sending people to third nation’s prisons, to killing fishermen, to pirating oil tankers, to starting a war in Venezuela and kidnapping the Venezuelan president.

Meanwhile, Congress is AWOL!

CONGRESS, impeach and convict Donald J. Trump TODAY!

A Glass-1/8th-Full Perspective's avatar

Maybe this land attack in Venezuela will be the last straw for a few House Republicans. There has been a myriad of precursor straws to choose from in deciding to jump off the Trump train, but an unapproved war should be a bridge too far.

Those who have seen my comments over the last few months know that I'm pushing something that I call the #ImmediateFlipMovement. And this should be that moment when the first couple of Republicans declare as independent, #ConscientiousDEFECTORS choosing to caucus with Democrats to prevent a war THIS COMING WEEK.

When they do that they'll unleash a #BlueHouseOversightRampage that should demand that Trump himself testify before Congress that Venezuelan aggression is warranted.

And whatever he says, impeachment comes next.

After the smoke clears from that, 80% of America will be ready to celebrate these clever defectors who will

#FlipTheHouseEarlyAndBeHeroesForever.

All it takes is a couple with a spine, a conscience, or insightful political instincts.

Mmerose's avatar

No! What the heck "the first couple of Republicans?" What the heck "demand that Trump testify?" Then we'll think about it? We are way over that pussyfoot as of NOW. Venezuelans are being mass murdered for the gratification of a monster. NOW.

AnaMaria🌸's avatar

STOP: Where does it say that “Venezuelan are being mass murdered”?! Are you reporting FACTS or inventing… for clickbait?!

Filing this one in my TDT -- Totally Delusional Todd -- file. One eighth full? More like more than one half a bubble off level.

Even IF the scheme works, it does NOTHING to restore trust in America by other nations of the world. The deal Todd offers is EVERY bit as moral and transactional as a Trump deal.

Traitors to our Constitution have to be identified and PROPERLY dealt with -- or kiss it goodbye.

Making war might be an ideal distraction when Americans are already angry with a foreign country but I don't think most Americans understand Trump's stance against Venezuela. I certainly don't other than seeing it as a manifestation of Trump's megalomania and desire to be seen as a strongman.

Mike Hammer's avatar

Saw you in MSnbc last night with Ali Velshi following Tim Snyder. Two colossal minds!

Jean Knowlton's avatar

Illegally attacked Venezuela, congress has not declared war, the executive branch does not have that power. Kidnapped Maduro and his wife, assaulted the country. Trump, Hegseth and every member of the military who obeyed these illegal orders need to be removed, sent to the Hague and tried for war crimes. This is just plain criminal, though, since there was no war.

Pamela Mendenhall-Howard's avatar

Jean....I agree! 💙💙💙🇺🇸

Cindy Wiggins's avatar

Isn't this grounds for impeachment? We need to put pressure on Congressional Republicans to stop this threat to America.
