Continuing to pressure Congress is vital. However, until Republicans are a minority, nothing will happen. This is where we are... and we hope that we will be able to vote the Republicans out in 2026, regain control of Congress, and move toward real impeachment and conviction.

Michael Hutchinson's avatar

Agree. But it will take more than a majority. The Republican Party must be completely MARGIANILIZED, otherwise this crap just goes on and on....

The DNC needs a progressive platform.

SunnySideUp's avatar

Ok like before whoever beats MAGA gets my vote. I’d prefer to pay down the debt and grow the economy through immigration, explaining to voters that progressive policies are a goal but come when we can pay for them. I don’t expect perfection but maybe keep one eye open for potential blowback and develop a taste for improvement. Everyone is going to have to live with something that they don’t like

Bill Katz's avatar

We need to move to the center not left

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I disagree. Moving farther right is what loses elections.

Michael Hutchinson's avatar

Agree, and respective;y disagree with Bill Katz.. The tacking to the right by the DNC over the last 40 years, and the greedy acceptance of corporate campaign donations, is what got us into this quagmire in the first place.

There is a lesson in history. In August 1945, just after the end of WWII, Winston Churchill had to call an election. There were no polls in those days and everyone assumed he would win, including the opposition Labour Party. When it came time to put out a manifesto, someone on the committee said "Since we're going to lose anyway why don't we put out what we really think, instead of tacking to the right as we always do."

The manifesto was: universal healthcare, free tuition, and higher taxes on the wealthy to pay for it - basically the Sanders platform.

Labour won in a landslide.

Bill Katz's avatar

It’s your prerogative of course. And Ihave my thoughts.

Laurie Blair's avatar

Bill Katz : I also disagree. we do not want more of the same that is clearly not working. it is a definition of mental illness to continue to do harm to oneself or others.

Richard Hansen's avatar

Agree with Bill Katz. A DNC progressive agenda is sure to keep Repubs in office. Faced with two poor choices during the 2024 election, moderates, undecideds voted for Trump. Can't let that happen again.

Michael Hutchinson's avatar

Camille Kelly's avatar

WRONG! It's been done, it's what Pelosi and Schumer do and it will kill the party completely. Reich wrote against centrist policy over the summer and demonstrated its ineffectiveness in his video, No Future Trumps.

Gosh, I am beyond disappointed that this is still a consideration pushed around. You're not going to sway any MAGAs, but you will surely lose more liberals. An economy that focuses on a living wage, Immigration policy reforms and Healthcare for everyone are the hot topics for the next Democratic progressive candidate. It's what the majority of liberals want. Ugh.

Bill Katz's avatar

Let’s all be on the same side per piacere.

Changing your mind is a sign of growth and learning not failing. There are opinions and there are informed opinions. Are we not the party trying to defend free speech and critical thinking?

What side are you on where we cannot debate what democratic policies we think will propel us forward versus which ones will hold us back? Who does the same thing over and over and expects different results? If we hadn't already tried centrist democratic paths, I'd be more open to it, but it was tried and it failed. We're already in the center. Biden was center. We need to move to more progressive policies. People are wanting change. The magas just didn't know what kind of change they want. trump and the radical right convinced them it was all the fault of immigrants and Democrats. We need to show them they lied and continue to lie.

Gail T's avatar

Maybe the current Repubs Achilles Heel is that they LIE about basically everything!!! That's what all Americans who love democracy ( small "d") can focus on... speaking The Truth!!! If that means having to admit being wrong sometimes - then, if truly wrong, admit it. Show that whatever party one belongs to one can truly love this country and want the best for ALL THEIR FELLOW AMERICANS!!! Isn't that the concept on which this country was founded! Most past Republicans understood this concept - and could actually dedicate themselves to working to achieve it!!! Protesting happens for a reason - there's a problem that needs fixing!!! When one loves one's country one wants to fix it... right?

Nancy Snow's avatar

Gail,

I think we cannot claim to want what is best for ALL Americans. I think what we must emphasize is that we want to create the best conditions for the greatest number of people, while ensuring the rights and beliefs of those in a minority situation are recognized, protected and considered.

To rich technocrats, high taxes on them, in their opinion, are not what is best for them. An opposing view is that they can afford it, and to whom much is given much is required.

For instance, to those who claim to be worried about the debt, let us propose a higher tax rate on those high earners and corporations to be applied to the debt until the debt is paid. Then, rates can be reduced--so that there is "something in it" for them--a lower rate AND, as a whole, the country is no longer paying the interest cost AND they have a more stable social and economic environment in which they can market their products. (A small % rate increase should also be applied to all taxpayers--because the debt belongs to all of us.)

When the debt is paid, the promised reduction in tax rate MUST occur in order to maintain trust in each other.

I like what GP Baltimore, below, is conveying.

We have to identify and pursue that with which we can easily agree, and then work on more difficult issues.

Lawrence Pinsky's avatar

And yet, no doubt, you think yourself a proud American.

Bill Katz's avatar

Be my guest. Oh and welcome to the new jazzy Nazi states of America.

G.P. Baltimore's avatar

We are presently legally guaranteed all of the freedoms stated in the Bill Of Rights and our Constitution. But, it is also obvious that we are fractured by opinion into roughly 3 different geographical sections. This dynamic cannot be maintained.

Why do we as Dems have to constantly emphasize what’s important to us as liberals? All of our Constitution and Amendments are there for a reason and are important. A lot of GOP support and votes in the past are now out-of-date because the Repub’s constantly change what their priorities are, for example: deficit spending and lying. They seem to rage about whatever FOX and their hero tell them to. Currently, that’s whatever takes their minds off of what the trump is presently doing or has been really up to.

I believe we all have common interests; issues we all can relate to. To campaign on primarily only certain issues emphasize differences. This is what clearly half of the country cannot understand or relate to. The majority of middle states and the South are not interested in voting for issues that the rest of us are committed to or worried about. This is their privilege. Our Constitution is for ALL of us not just them or us.

The fact that the rights are there in case any of us need them is what’s important. An impartial court of law is what’s important to maintain our protection along with honest representatives. Now, the administration is eroding and attempting to destroy these rights. I believe they’re getting away with it because the administration and their wealthy string pullers tell their constituents that tax money is primarily for issues that they either aren’t interested in or that threaten their beliefs. Trying to change their imbedded beliefs, or threaten them by pounding on only certain select campaign issues will not change this MAGA crowd one bit, but rather, only make them feel more frustrated, just as we do, now.

The rights guaranteed all of us in our Constitution and Bill are clearly not what the MAGA crowd want to hear. This is why they voted for a would-be dictator. MAGA ARE THE MINORITY. We as a whole are the majority, we have the numbers. Yet, the don is in office, now, for a second term after so many lies, blunders, and law breaking in his first time around. We need to somehow get united on issues we do have in common and pound on that. Biden managed to temporarily unite a fractured country and literally rescued us from trump’s misdeeds the first time around, but like a virus, he came back.

This is all about the greed of a relative handful of billionaires and corporate controllers who tell trump exactly what he wants to hear to inflate his fragile, ill ego. It’s also about these same string pullers, who under the guise of religion and political labels have successfully bought a whole administration who have convinced part of our population to believe they have a savior. They pour endless amounts of cash into buying news agencies and media of all kinds, and pound weak minded people into believing they actually should control not only the country’s workforce and how we will earn a living in the future, but our very quality of life, the air we breathe and our food and water.

This administration is directed to destroy our guaranteed rights. The rights that serve to protect us as a population, but also pose a threat to their power. These powers they so freely wield against us in order to protect their bloated wealth both now and in the future.

These corporate controlling billionaires want more power OVER us all and the more money they amass and hoard the more control they can buy. They are making the US into their personal playground while hiding behind congress and this twisted administration.

We have to pull the country together somehow. Show we have the numbers. We have to stop feeding the us vs. them scenario, and at least look and act united in the interests and needs we all do share as human beings. A fractured country, especially in 3 separate, geographical parts is not sustainable.

Russell John Netto's avatar

There is no centre any more, Bill, in US politics - it's a fatal illusion that may yet cost the Democrats success in the mid-term elections. Your country has only been as divided before during the Civil War. If you don't choose a side you will just get swept along on the tide.

In Canada we had a more left leaning Liberal party in power for 10 years. When PM Trudeau resigned, Mark Carney was elected leader. He went on to win with a resounding majority even though many Canadians were disillusioned with the federal Liberal Party. If you follow Canadian politics at all, you will see that PM Carney is much more of a centrist in his policies and projects as he works to expand our natural energy, ramp up military spending and address our substantial housing shortage. He brings a background of stability and financial expertise as he guided both the UK and Canada through periods of financial turmoil. His reasoned, proactive and more centrist approach appealed to both right and left leaning voters.

65 should really be the required age of retirement for politicians. Too many people now suffer from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and it usually appears somewhere around 65. There should also be a limit to how many terms Congress members and Senators can serve. I think 3 terms for Congress and 2 for Senators. None of them should be up there for longer than 12 years. I have also come to realize that there needs to be a limit on how long a person can serve on the Supreme Court… 20 years is technically a generational period. Do we want someone to hold sway over an entire generation? I think not.

Republicans are a minority in this country. But not in the Congress. And why is that!? Basically, as it stands the system is broken and the population is misrepresented. Tell me how you justify giving 2 senators to a state with 20 million people and 2 senators to a state with 2 million people? And that's before you even discuss gerrymandering!

And there's no talk of proportional representation, is there! That would be a first good step but in America, it's winner take all. Always has been and don't see it changing anytime in the near future.

1. Calling human beings "illegals" is dehumanizing. Is Donald Trump an "illegal," since he is actually a convicted felon?

2. We tried the sovereign state deal, and it didn't work (see: Articles of Confederation). That's why we have a federal government now.

3. The Constitution mandates that every PERSON be counted. So you want to violate the Constitution in order to pretend undocumented immigrants don't actually exist?

Robert's avatar

> 1. Calling human beings "illegals" is dehumanizing.

It’s quite an accurate description of their status. “Invaders”, if you prefer.

> Is Donald Trump an "illegal," since he is actually a convicted felon?

His “convictions” are the feature of an absolutely cucking forrupt system. 0 x 88 is still 0. I note that the Georgia state case is also collapsing under the weight of its own corruption.

> 2. We tried the sovereign state deal, and it didn't work (see: Articles of Confederation). That's why we have a federal government now.

Putting Prickster and other insurrectionist governors into a position of rebels to be crushed a la Lincoln.

> 3. The Constitution mandates that every PERSON be counted.

OK

> So you want to violate the Constitution in order to pretend undocumented immigrants don't actually exist?

You would undoubtedly like to think so, but it would be comparatively easy to include a question on citizenship in the census and apportion House seats accordingly - after all, that’s only one part of the census. When one suggests that that would reduce California to the status of Wyoming, one is exaggerating, but the results would be VERY interesting.

Thank you, Lenore Delgado for your intent to help, however, I believe that by saying that nothing will happen until the Republican party is a minority, you may be putting forth a sentiment that will harm our participation today by indicating that it cannot have a tangible effect. I'm confident that doing our "duty" today, as Robert Reich suggests, is extremely important and will make a much-needed step toward renewal of our constitutional rights. There may be another party arise in the future that replaces the party that Lincoln led through that civil war (which will likely take a long time) - OR it's possible that the more reasonable realistic Americans will prevail in reviving the Republican brand. After all, what's in a name? Label it as the populace will, but the two-party system has worked for a long time, although it has not always worked very smoothly. NO KINGS, EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL UNDER LAW!

In my tiny little county of 10,000 people where an amazing number of 6,500 or so actually vote and of those, about 38% vote Blue or Independent; we had 275 people turn out for the No Kings Protest today. And most exciting was that it was a mixed group: young, old, middle-aged, White, Black, etc. Understandably I didn’t see any Latino folks in the crowd, but a few rode by and waved and honked. At the June No Kings we had 24 people show up. There has been a big shift just since June.

There will be more people showing up for No Kings day than have been to ALL Trump rallies combined.

Why do you think the admin is so scared of the estimated number of people attending? It speaks for itself! They're calling it "hate America rally", although using our first amendment rights to protest against an authoritarian government seems the MOST American thing.

America the beautiful.

America you are weary, but not finished. Stones may have shifted in your foundations and shadows may gather at your gates, yet there is breath in your chest and light in your soul. Do not let your wounds write your ending. Remember who you were: a stubborn, hopeful thing that refused to bow.

Tomorrow, October 18th, Seize control of federal buildings—nonviolently. Nepal reformed its entire government in two days—over Discord. Anything is possible. Walk into Congress. Take back your House. Take back your state capitals. Don’t say it can’t be done; impossible is a word used by fools. The far‑right proves every day that the impossible is possible—because they act. They march, they infiltrate, they seize. And what do you do—wait? Hope? America was founded on revolution, not submission. This isn’t radical; it’s tradition. Any excuse now is cowardice. This is your last chance, because if you don’t act, America will become no different from Russia: a democracy in name only, ruled by fear and force. You have the numbers. You have the right. So take it back.

Show me your courage, America. Show me your strength and your tenderness. Bring comfort to the mother who worries, and steadiness to the father who struggles. Let Lady Liberty stand tall again not because we force her, but because we become her: torch-bearing, compassionate, true. The dream is not finished. Rise—steadfast, peaceful, and resolute—and prove that love can still remake a nation.

I still believe in America.

Be safe tomorrow and take care of those around you.

Done!!! Doing what I can while living abroad. What's happening in the US now is also horrifying for we Americans living overseas. We are with you. We vote. We write. Sure, we sit at the beach and drink beer, but we are paying close attention. Thank you Robert for being so engaged and doing what you can to save a fragile and seemingly teetering democratic republic. Stay safe and peaceful everyone tomorrow & post your signs and video on Bluesky for us all to see!!! #NoKings

Go find the American Embassy where you are and protest with us tomorrow!

I would, it's terrrrrrrribly far from us!!! We'll be with you in spirit though!!!!! This is so good. I expect there will be btw 7-8M protesting JUST in the US, not counting the No Kings rallies all around the world!!!!! So inspiring, warms my heart. We got this. xoxoxoxo

Please be alert and safe. My heart is with you . I am too old and would get in the way but my support love and prayers are in lock step. March loud and proud this is the people’s country ….that is its greatness.

I hope tomorrow is ENORMOUS! That said, we all must realize that even if every single one of the millions of us protest peacefully, the Republicans will 100% get their people to behave violently, blame us, and give Trump the excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act that he is itching for. But no matter - this protest has to be the biggest ever, and the one after even bigger. Good luck out there tomorrow everyone!

Turn the other cheek. Those of us who can't be there due to living in other nations, will be watching on uncensored channels and cheering for you and praying for you. Keep your dignity. America has more than one National Anthem. It would be good if they could all be sung, one after the other, as you march. A force attacking a group singing the National Anthem will look a bit out of place.

Trump is running to the Supreme Court to get permission to deploy troops.

And he'll probably get it even though the court runs out of money today.

We’re all rooting for you over here in the UK… I so hope tomorrow’s rallies go peacefully and make the required points and that the Dicktator doesn’t completely lose it and do what we fear he will.

Tomorrow is a big day. Good luck 💛

Thanks for your support!

I fear the "Dicktator" has already "lost it" and no one on Earth knows what the psychopath will do next (except perhaps his buddy Putin).

Be glad you are in the UK, where you can keep your distance and sense of perspective. That helps.
