Nothing threatens a conman desperate to be seen as praise-worthy more than someone who has actually earned respect.

LHS's avatar

I was driving home yesterday, listening to NPR. When they got to the story about Hegseth threatening to court martial Kelly, I was bellowing at my radio, "Bring it!". I can think of very little Trump & Co. would regret more than putting Mark Kelly on the witness stand.

Charles's avatar

I see no way a military tribunal, or any other court, would convict Senator Kelly for stating the *law* in the UCMJ. Trump and Hegseth are two loose cannon, too full of themselves to make rational decisions.

Linda Boccia's avatar

Not only are they full of themselves they simply don't understand the process of law. It is NOT ENOUGH to be vengeful and thin skinned about remarks that were the rule of law and to try to prosecute. You have to have proof of malfeasance and hegseth AND trump have none. They are BOTH MORONS.

Charles's avatar

Linda, I am in complete agreement.

Mary E. Martin's avatar

Totally agree Linda - I think trump is given way too much credit for the mouth diarrhea he spouts. The only legal concept he may be able to grasp is "I'll sue!" He doesn't know and couldn't care less about the differences between a military tribunal, a court case, due process, or exactly what a legal and an illegal action entails.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Mary, you are right about Trump's inability to discern among legal actions and who can do what. His dementia increases daily and he can't reason well. I know he was never much at reasoning at the best of times, but now, it is really bad and his handlers, his toddler pool just keep pretending Trump is just fine!! That's for their own personal gain of course.

Susan Gorman Gerke's avatar

If anyone should be tried for treason it’s DJT who has ignored the constitution and incited a riot, that he had hoped would be a coup on January 6 2020.

He went on to steal top secret documents and hide them his bathroom. He also shared some of these documents to foreigners for no other purpose than to show off. He was not the president at that time.

Once elected for the second time he immediately pardoned all of the insurrectionists including people who during that insurrection committed some of the most heinous crimes.

Now he’s sending government troops to protect federal buildings. What about his proud boys who broke windows and rubbed their feces in the Capitol’s halls? He wouldn’t even call the National Guard let alone military troops.

I propose we charge DJT with treason, for he certainly has both then and now broken the laws set forth by the constitution. And if I’m not mistaken, I’m pretty sure the Capitol is a federal building.

MaryLouise Clarke's avatar

I don't understand why they haven't tossed him out of the White House already.

Margaret Reis's avatar

I don't understand how he was allowed to run for office in the first place! There must be a competent test to run!

Charles's avatar

The Constitution specifies two ways to "toss him out of the White House": Impeachment or removal under the Twenty-fifth Amendment. Impeachment requires both Houses of Congree to agree and a two-thirds majority in the Senate. Twenty-fifth Amendment removal requires the VP and Cabinet officers to determine that the president is not longer able to serve. In other words, we're stuck with him for the time being.

Charles's avatar

I have viewed Trump as a traitor since early in his first administration. It hadn't grown up to be a regime yet!

Joe H's avatar

Pete “Kegstand” Hegseth is the poster boy for dry drunks - alcoholics deprived of their booze against their wishes.

I’ve known a few. They are unable to take criticism w/o resorting to anger.

He is useless but dangerous, well until his charges in the military revolt by honoring their oath to our Constitution. They can and should defy this second-tier newsman from Fox.

A R's avatar

Loose cannons on a heaving deck, no less.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

LHS, you are so right! Can you imagine Trump and his stupid lawyers trying to make the accusations against Kelly with the judge holding a straight face and Hegseth trying to explain how he can justify trying to get Kelly court Martialed! What a joke, two ignoramuses who have done nothing positive in their lives, standing against an actual American hero!

Barbara B's avatar

Well, Hegseth says Kellys medal are out of order on his uniform picture. That’s certainly serious!!

Laugh now. Kelly has so many medals they almost don’t all fit!

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Barbara, how would Hegseth know? He hardly served and was probably drunk most of the time!

Mike Hammer's avatar

Sounds like fodder for SNL.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Mike, you are so right! That troupe could do an amazing job with it and might even get some people to actually see what is really going on with their Baby Donnie!

Jill Stoner's avatar

Yep. Bring it on!

Donna Maurillo's avatar

Hegseth and Trump should watch "Nuremberg" if they want a lesson in following illegal orders. Of course, Madame Leavett says that every order that Trump gives is a legal order. I'd love to see this reach the courts.

Susan Gorman Gerke's avatar

I’ve notice that the perky miss Leave-it has bags under her eyes. Probably can’t sleep after telling DJT’s lies everyday.

John Rainey's avatar

The scary part: given the ultra-authoritarian Supreme Court, anything the President does, when acting in his official capacity as President, may perhaps be seen as ipso-facto legal — beyond the Orange Man’s wildest fantasies!

Anon's avatar

Donna - T probably couldn’t even stay awake past the opening credits of Nuremberg and the movie isn’t airing on Fox so he once again he “knows nothing about it”. He is trying to bring back another Rush Hour movie because he sees the 80’s and 90’s as the best times. Neither one has a clue about what they are doing these days and (to quote from another movie that he should probably watch) “he can’t handle the truth”. ;)

Joe H's avatar

Leavitt is a pathological liar with no moral compass. So sad to see someone so young with such a sadistic streak.

I’m sure Trump is proud of her. What the hell was she doing before this gig? I think she’s in her mid 20s.

Sad.

Donna Maurillo's avatar

And after this, she will be a blond Fox bobble head.

Joe H's avatar

Fox is the only place I can imagine her getting a job after this gig. But she may be below even Fox's low standards.

She is simply incapable of creative, spontaneous, and/or insightful comment. She is an AI robot set to deflect and cast aspersions on anything that calls into question the Yam Man's actions. (I'd say "the Yam Man's thinking" but that is an oxymoron).

I truly don't believe she will be employable. Even the dreadful Sean Spicer offered some insight, such as it was, rather than just blather the WH talking points and denials. He at least displayed some emotion. Sarah Huckabee Whatever was simply vicious, like all good Evangelists. What good is Jesus if he can't be used as a weapon of hatred?

How can someone so young and otherwise articulate keep spouting outright lies? She's never had a single original thought since being PS.

Xplisset's avatar

Ian, man, reading this my brain was like, “welp, there it is, diagnosis in one sentence.” That’s pure narcissistic injury right there: the grifter melts down the second a real grown-up with receipts walks into the room. www.xplisset.com

@Ian wins the Killer comment award!

Susan Gorman Gerke's avatar

They need a strong majority vote to get rid of him. He was impeached twice in his first term but didn’t have the backing to remove him. And I’ve seen announcements that they can get rid of the entire cabinet but I don’t know if it’s fact or wishful thinking.

Joe H's avatar

Interesting. If Trump was removed, JD “eyeliner” Vance takes over. It would be up to him to retain the cabinet or pick his own. I don’t think he could make the cabinet any worse.

Susan Gorman Gerke's avatar

Many years ago a friend of mine and a father asked his son why he wore eyeliner.

His son replied “Because YOU don’t!”

Joe H's avatar

Yeah Susan I think there is some kind of universal law that kids are biologically programmed to do the opposite of what their parents do.

Must be Darwinian/Natural Selection related

Anon's avatar

Ian - Anything that I have to say just got put aside because you said it better in one sentence than I ever could! Great work!

Side note: (Of course I have to add…) But, I was also going to address the fact that Hegseth now wants to ignore Congress and take away the funding for Scouts America (formerly Boy Scouts) just because they had the audacity to rename themselves and include girls. Nothing like telling a whole bunch of children that they can no longer go to military bases or have the military participation in their activities just because girls are now included. They get a decent amount of children who participate in Scouts (both boys and girls) who then enter the military but this could keep that from happening. Plus, what message is this action telling the children? Apparently none of them are welcome in the military because the Scouts now include little humans without a certain dangling appendage I guess. My child went from this type of organization (Scouts) into the Navy and is proud of the legacy that people like Kelly have left behind - but they are not so proud of the current heads of the military because of this administration. Plus, they don’t like the fact that this administration/cabinet has moved into military housing (because they are scared of what they created) and it has taken away resources from active duty members.

Judith S. McConnell's avatar

I lived near in Tucson where Gabby was shot and I would do anything to get elected to president. I never will hear of a more devoted couple to each other and America.

Joe Tonini's avatar

Perhaps drawing more attention to Senator Kelly and the other former military and intelligence members of Congress who made the video will help an increasing number of tRUMPistas realize how much they have been duped by the Orange Bonespur.

Jane's avatar

Yep, drawing more attention to Kelly, about as true representation of American patriot as there is, will hopefully build support for him as the leader we need coming out of this dark administration.

David Doyle's avatar

Nope, what I read in the comment section of our local paper is that the video was "encouraging military members to disregard orders". It's like they didn't even listen to the video but rather just listened to the Trump Cabal.

Kelly for President. This country needs a hero and a decent person, desperately.

Christine's avatar

What is not to love about this man? He has all the qualities I want in a leader and a President. The total opposite of the man-child in the Oval.

GingerLee's avatar

Agreed the MAGAs will rue the day they put Kelly in the spotlight but honestly it's been something I've been thinking about for at least a month.. we need a true military person in charge to get this country back on its feet...

Gary Slovin's avatar

Yes. And the qualities of a decent human, too. How different that would be.

Anon's avatar

Christine - It boils down to one word - integrity. Something the others seriously lack.

Martha Ture's avatar

Integrity, courage, fierce devotion to duty, respectful of the rules of engagement and the rules of civility, steady under pressure, knowledgeable, skillful, and able in leadership.

Anon's avatar

Martha - So true! Words most of us were taught, and strive to live by, but some how are totally devoid in this administration.

Pamela's avatar

They probably don't even know the meaning of the word as evidenced by their bubble-gum and disgusting behavior.

Anon's avatar

Pamela - Agree, and it’s sad watching how their actions are hurting so many people.

Pamela's avatar

It is simply horrifying.

Jan's avatar

Not to mention the talk show host running our military and threatening John Kelly with a court marshal!

Lisa Browning's avatar

Mark Kelly is a great man, a true patriot and is what I wish more members of our government, at every level, would strive to emulate. I would vote for Sen. Kelly for any position which he might choose to run, including President. He would make an exceedingly great President.

GingerLee's avatar

It's so strange for me a 79yo hippie nonna/grandma going for someone with a true long military background and yet it feels like the right thing todo... so much to fix and correct after this destruction

Babydoc's avatar

I’m with you, Ginger, except I’m 76. I was in college during “prime time”, and saw what it took to convince the criminal administration of Nixon that killing more people in SE Asia, including or own military, was going to accomplish nothing. Trump is now the worst president in history, which gives poor Nixon a break. He’s now the 2nd worse.

Mary Stewart's avatar

Several people I have talked with mention that Trump makes Nixon look good. At least Nixon had the decency to resign.

Robert Matthews's avatar

Decency or self-preservation? He should have gone to prison.

Pamela's avatar

He really didn't have a choice. Barry Goldwater and the boys went to him and told him to resign or he would be impeached. No integrity there.

Nancy Dickowski's avatar

I'm also 79, but not really a hippie - married too young to be a part of this elite group . . . but I am wise enough to know crap when I see and hear it. The first time I saw DJT on his TV show and saw his contemptuous face spitting out "Your Fired!," I immediately disliked his arrogant tone - and the rest of him went down hill FAST! How he had made it this far has boggled my mind. There is not enough room on Robert's post for me to say how I really feel about DJT and his MASTER puppeteers --- for all of it amounts to a game. He's stupid enough (and THEY know it) and fool enough to follow wherever the strings pull him or his signature gets on an EO (I'd bet my retirement on his not having read them), or to let him loose to 'act on his own volition'. This particular event of him allowing idiots to also pull strings - and the list here would go on and on - will be his undoing, for sure. Then, we may be faced with a bigger problem with flashy Vancey --- the made for TV VP --- with bigger goals being DESIGNED for him.

Lilla Russell's avatar

I'd like to be 5th please supporting Richard's comment (and originally from RR).

Charles's avatar

I could support the idea. Imagine a man with true integrity; a man who stayed with his wife through very tough times; a man who has actually served in combet and flew in space four times. If Kelly was a poor president (which I doubt) he would still be about one hundred times better than the current occupant!

Lilla Russell's avatar

Yes Richard! You are so right that our country desperately needs a hero and a decent person for President and Mark Kelly has all the qualities that we need in an unbelievably courageous leader with integrity and compassion for everyday Americans. I would love to vote for him as our next president.

Sen Tammy Duckworth, a vet who sacrificed both legs in defense of this country, summed it up:

“Pete Hegseth is a f*cking liar. This is so clearly classified info he recklessly leaked that could’ve gotten our pilots killed. He needs to resign in disgrace immediately. “Hegseth and every other official who was included in this group chat must be subject to an independent investigation. If Republicans won’t join us in holding the Trump Administration accountable, then they are complicit in this dangerous and likely criminal breach of our national security.” https://www.duckworth.senate.gov/news/press-releases/duckworth-pete-hegseth-needs-to-resign-in-disgrace

Marguerite Boyens's avatar

Amen to your comment, Senator Duckworth, and high praise to you for your integrity and courage in countering the disgraceful administration in power now.

Jane's avatar

How about Kelly/Duckworth in 2028! The true American patriot ticket!

kasperhauser's avatar

I've heard of zero integrity but I've never heard of negative integrity. Then Pete Kegbreath spoke about Mark Kelly...

Christy Shaver's avatar

What hits me most in all of this is how dangerous it is when public servants are attacked simply for upholding the Constitution. Mark Kelly has spent his life serving this country with courage and integrity, and his response here shows what real leadership looks like, calm, grounded, and committed to democratic principles even under threat.

Moments like this remind me how essential it is to protect not just political democracy but economic democracy too. When power concentrates in too few hands, intimidation becomes a tool. Expanding democratic accountability is how we keep our institutions strong and our communities safe.

I’m grateful for leaders like Kelly who refuse to be silenced. We need that kind of steadiness now more than ever.

Xplisset's avatar

Christy, You got me sitting here nodding along like “yeah, this is what the job is supposed to look like, not some freakin Marvel movie cameo.” When basic constitutional courage gets treated as radical, it’s a sign the rest of us have to step up too so folks like Kelly aren’t the last thin line between us and the bullies. www.xplisset.com

Anon's avatar

Christy - Absolutely. Plus, we can’t forget that T’s words have put another target on lawmakers. We have already seen a man with a hit list kill a state lawmaker. T only gets upset about rhetoric when it is turned against him. This time the rhetoric was just the plain truth written in the military laws.

Orion Clemens's avatar

I'm a long time Arizonan (have lived in the state 53 years), a retired attorney who litigated more than 40 years, and a proud lifelong Democrat.

What folks outside of Arizona need to understand is that Mark Kelly is extremely popular here. He has nearly unanimous support among Democrats, and very strong support among Independents. Kelly is among the most well respected Senators in this country, for that matter. His record (before and since his tenure in the Senate) is without question.

Trump has picked the wrong fight this time. Trump will lose the legal fight if he proceeds. More importantly he'll lose the political fight. There is just no one out here who dislikes or thinks ill of Mark Kelly. His integrity is beyond question. I think any viewers who saw his interview with Rachel Maddow last night will attest to this.

They don't make 'em any better than Mark Kelly. Literally the most despicable, ignorant person who ever sat in the Oval Office has gone after literally the best this country has to offer. Mark Kelly will win this fight. Not a doubt in my mind.

Nancy Dickowski's avatar

This is one war that has been lost to DJT from the get-go. The true test of his and his handlers could never have planned for - unless they want DJT to end this way.

I think Trump's idiotic and unconstitutional move here has just about assured that Mark Kelly will be President, if not in 2028, then in 2032.

Peggy Freeman's avatar

Senator Kelly is a man I could get behind, campaign for and vote for as president!

Michelle Jordan's avatar

I agree. And as defending the Constitution becomes increasingly important, I think his record in that regard is unsurpassed. Maybe we should thank Trump for increasing his name recognition.

Doreen Dalesandro's avatar

Americans have very short memories. We have to continuously remind them of Senator Kelly's exemplary qualifications for president.

Michelle Jordan's avatar

Well, it's ridiculous but true. Trump has done his bit, now we need to do the rest.

Donald Hodgins's avatar

Trump's ego enema stinks--

Senator Mark Kelly is in the cross hairs of the Trump administration. How sick can they get, yes I'm referring to Trump and Hegseth. The subject being, if service members are bound and obligated to ignore commands that are known to be "Illegal" in nature--They sure as hell are. If your commanding officer issues a directive that you know to be illegal, tell that prick to take a hike. Kent State stands as an excellent example of what happens when the ignorance of an officer over takes common sense and the law. Trump is pissed off because he has it in his head to conduct a series of nefarious military invasions into various cities positioned within our own country. What would happen if the officer in charge simply said "No." Someone's BP would cause the moron to have a stroke. It is beyond me to think of all the ignorance in our country today. Those 6 Democrats who aired that segment explaining an individual's right to ignore a direct order if it is known to be illegal in nature, are patriots while our President is a moron.

Martha Redsecker's avatar

our potus is a total moron!

Elene Gusch's avatar

I wouldn't mind a bit seeing Kelly run for president. However, he may have better things to do.

Lori McConnell's avatar

What a relief it would be to have someone run for President out of a sense of duty, instead of self-aggrandizement or opportunism. Mark Kelly as president would be meeting a need of the country.

Mary Stewart's avatar

The "better thing to do" might well be to have time to help his wife. As president he would have more obligations than as a senator.

Peggy Freeman's avatar

Yes, he would make an excellent president. I admire and respect Senator Mark E. Kelly. His love and service to our country stands out as what a true patriot is all about. Hogsbreath and the orange man are nothing more than the white scum you see on top of a pile of manure.

Martha Redsecker's avatar

BEST EVER RESPONSE, PEGGY! :)

Leoni McVey's avatar

The contrast between him and Pete Hegseth or Trump couldn't be more larger

Leoni McVey's avatar

Sorry everybody…that was irrelevant but could not resist commenting…. A bit of silliness to cheer us and Robert Reich is checking to see if we are paying attention.

Richard Brody's avatar

I vaguely recall during basic training in the Air Force there was a section on UCMJ - the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Illegal orders were discussed but I cannot recall how much attention was paid to it. But UCMJ was an important part of my training and I’m certain it remains so today. So when the President or one of his lackeys decides to have the military “do something” that’s patently illegal we should hope that all military folks follow the rules, especially when something they might do would cause them to be prosecuted.

Paula's avatar

Absolutely! I'm glad that people are highlighting the UCMJ and getting people to pay more attention to it. Refusal to cooperate with the unconstitutionality will help save the country.

Nancy Dickowski's avatar

I also just read some interesting information on being a Conscientious Objector - while in the military: An individual who refuses to do something on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, and/or religion.
