Welcome to Office Hours!
I’ve been a teacher for most of my life. Teaching energizes me and enables me to stay curious and present.
The best part of teaching is the conversation. While I can’t look each of you in the eyes to see your mind gears turning (and I doubt all of you could fit in my office), I’d love for you to join me for Office Hours here every Wednesday.
This will be a space for you to ask me questions and to share your own opinions and experiences. I hope that it can be dialogue not only between you and me, but also among one another.
To kick this off, I’d appreciate it if you responded to this question: in your view, how would you rate congressional Democrats in handling Biden’s agenda so far?
And of course please feel free to ask me anything.
I’ll be online from 10-11am PT/1-2pm ET responding to your comments.
Before we start, I’d like to pull from an old syllabus to establish some community norms for these weekly Office Hours:
— Practice civility. Civility is not about agreeing. It’s about how we disagree. Let’s avoid the nastiness that has come to dominate so many of our online conversations these days.
— Assume positive intent. Try to understand what others are getting at.
— Be open-minded about dissenting views. The best way of learning anything is to talk to somebody who disagrees with you.
Friends, I'm going to have to head off now. Hope this was helpful to you. (I hope this newsletter is helpful, too!).
Democrats will have to give up on the idea that present-day Republicans are reasonable and willing to be bi-partisan. Dems need to develop stronger spines, use their power to overturn filibuster, expand SCOTUS, and just take off the damn gloves!
