This was an outstanding speech.

John Crowe's avatar

It was beyond outstanding-- it was brilliant. What a treat to hear from somebody who knows what they're talking about.

Deb Pierce McCabe's avatar

I think outstanding and brilliant are the same-- 😄 but yes, it is refreshing to hear a world leader speak with such eloquence.

Cyndi Magill's avatar

unlike the rambling mostly lies and incoherent BS Donnie has spouted at both his lunatic press conference yesterday and then today at Davos. What an embarrassment.

JudithMontreal's avatar

It's equally embarrassing that Congressional republicans, by their silence, continue to support this cretin as he continues to create global chaos from his bully pulpit. We, outsiders, don't understand why republicans would willingly drag your country into the abyss, isolation, and potential financial ruination.

Even after trump is gone, the GOP's 'political' debasement is a pivotal reason that the USA can no longer be trusted as a "reliable" or ethical partner and ally. Dim-wits, John Thune and Mike Johnson, are globally perceived to be impotent leaders and cowardly stooges, selling out their country/people then unleashing trump's abominations on the rest of us. We can only ask, why?

Do republican politicians even follow the news? Do they understand what's going on in the world? Do they all lack an "imagination" as to the consequences of their misplaced loyalty to a psychotic and demented mob boss? Do they realize that they're squandering away the standing of the USA for decades to come? Do they even care that most Americans are equally opposed and dumbfounded?

Your SCOTUS, along with the republican party, have demonstrated that they are no longer interested in upholding democratic norms, the rule of law, and alliances with your former allies.

Mary Ellen Dawson's avatar

Well said! If only “those people” would read your comments and the speech made by Prime Minister Carney!

JudithMontreal's avatar

Sadly, they've let down the country so many times that no one has any faith or expectation they'll do right by the people they were elected to serve. Instead, they do nothing - except ignore their oaths of office while collecting paychecks they didn't earn and don't deserve. Gutless little QUISLINGS.

Ken Smith's avatar

I would also ask where the hell are the Democrats? Are they tainted by $$$$ too?

Joan Diehl's avatar

Ken Smith, YES they are tainted. If this regime succeeds in destroying our democracy, the weak democrats want to be in position to jump on board, become a willing partner of this corrupt regime. To save their own a…..es ( power, money). Instead of fighting for our fragile democracy with every fiber of their being, the corrupt democrats are selling the soul of our country. For what? To sit at the table with the likes of DJT and others that will surely follow. Damn them all for their compliance!

Penny K's avatar

And you "think" this is true, how?

David's avatar

Judith,I think one of the reasons they follow him blindly is because he has been a major supporter of AI and as a result the tech stocks are going crazy. They all own stock and in this derulatory environment ,many have massive gains. They are interested in money ,not Democracy,in fact many believe Democracy is outmoded, equal rights a thing of the past. They wish for a Technocracy and they all support project 2025. If the Dems had better spokepeople, they would be saying the same thing. Dems are stockholders as well and they ae doing well,so why really rock the boat. They are saying we tried our best, but we have failed. And yes they have failed miserably.Shumer,Shiff, and so many others.

Listening to Carney’s speech is worth everyone’s time, I think. Read it, too!

It's absolutely superb.

Joan Diehl's avatar

It will go down in history as the speech of the century, the speech of an era!

Thank you, Canada! You have been a wonderful NATO ally. Some of us remember you & others standing with us after 9/11. Please know that you are valued, even if not by the so called thugs who are a) intent on destroying us and b) supposed leaders who won’t oppose the thugs. Go, Canada!

Judy Sherwood's avatar

Ahh... to have a leader like Mr. Carney. Such a solid, intelligent, honorable and well-spoken man. Role model for integrity. Too bad we have an orange idiot... what a comparison between the two... There really is NO comparison. Thank you for sharing his brilliant speech... powerful tribute to collaboration and humanity.

Yes, we would all love to have a leader right now with his intelligence, his resolve, and his moral vision. Judy Sherwood's avatar

Canada needs to take over the US.

Jan C's avatar

Why would Canada want us?

Leslie's avatar

Yes, I can understand that as wishful thinking. I would love it if we could replace Trump with Canada‘s Prime Minister as our president instead. But the whole point of the prime minister‘s speech is, if you don’t have enough power to conquer somebody you need to figure out Partial measures with the help of allies. I don’t think any country wants to take over the United States. It’s too daunting and not enough reward.

Penny Pawl's avatar

do you think DJT listened and got the message. He has become a liability for the USA.

When can this Canadian take over here!!!!!

Deb Pierce McCabe's avatar

Penny, I doubt he got the message, but here's who I hope were listening: the GOP leadership who have supported his atrocities, AND the Democrats and progressives who need to know what having a spine looks and sounds like. I know the rest of the world was listening, and I hope the American people were also listening. This is what courage and vision look like. We need to build stronger coalitions within the US right now, too, if we are ever to free ourselves from the rot and malice that have darkened our days and jeopardized our own people. We have needed this honesty and reckoning for YEARS, especially with regard to protecting our own children at their schools, and so many other of our citizens. Take the sign out of the window. I hope the progressive leaders here in the US are listening.

Debi's avatar

Totally agree with you, but I suggest that our ENTIRE federal government could at least get a reminder and where needed a lesson from actually hearing and comprehending Carney's excellent speech. Regardless of part affiliation, the majority of them need to grow a spine and reclaim honesty and honor and integrity. It wouldn't hurt if they each re-read the oath of office they each took and then made a REAL commitment to actually trying to live up to that oath in the future. The current administration has turned our government into such a incompetent lying joke, we could really use someone with real character.

Penny Pawl's avatar

I love everything you say. May I follow you

Deb Pierce McCabe's avatar

Of course! And thank you.

David's avatar

Courage and Vision, does that sound like something Dems have? If so other Bernie,AOC,Chris Murphy,Robert Garcia,Chris Van Hollen,Newesom.Am I missing anyone?

Paul Jerome Lareau's avatar

Jan C's avatar

Imo if Dem "leaders" could grow spines (or other male body parts), they would have by now. PM Carney's speech was a masterpiece, but it won't change institutional Dems.

AGC's avatar

My guess he didn't listen nor read the text. He doesn't read. If he did read, he wouldn't understand the vocabulary or it's overall meaning.

Margaret Rivera's avatar

He probably did not listen and even if he had, he would have uttered some profanity or called Canada a bad name and said something totally ridiculous like they should become our 51 state. Trump speaks nothing but BS

Carol Shetler's avatar

He just said that Canada was "ungrateful" and that "Canada lives because of the United States." Same old baloney as always.

Debi's avatar

Not sure tRump has (or ever really had) the mental capacity to actually comprehend someone using a good vocabulary to speak about being an intelligent, rational, caring human being. Those topics are outside his experience and ability.

Jan C's avatar

Of course not! He may have HEARD it, but he wouldn't have paid any attention. He's been a liability for the USA since 2015. But too many Americans, including corp. media, are too selfish and ignorant to care or understand. That includes every corporate Dem. in Congress, starting with Schumer and Jeffries and continuing from there.

We can get nothing back until they're gone too.

J Dickson's avatar

DJT doesn't listen to anyone. That's his whole problem . He doesn't take advice and surrounds himself with yes-men and women. He is completely useless AND dangerous.

Russell John Netto's avatar

On NBC News, Treasury secretary Scott Bessent was asked what national emergency justified Trump’s resort to slapping tariffs on countries opposed to his demands. He bizarre response was:

“The national emergency is avoiding a national emergency. It is a strategic decision by the president. This is a geopolitical decision. And he is able to use the economic might of the US to avoid a hot war. So why wouldn’t we do that?”.

So now it appears that the administration can declare a national emergency in order to head off a national emergency. Let's see them run that one before the courts.

Karen Close's avatar

We can only hope they do...

MikeyB's avatar

It is fine, but it is sad that it was needed. Would it have been needed if Harris had won and followed Biden's strategy of investment? No, the oligarchs defeated America to implement their strategy of extraction. They are not the last target. Canada is on the list as are the rest of the countries of the world. The wealthy powers will use their economic power to dim the hopes laid out in the prime Minister's speech. No, as has been said, it is not right vs left in the US, it is top vs bottom... and that war is not over. It is the ancient class war. The wealthy were incensed by the New Deal and have worked since then to put the wealthy back above the law where they belong and in control of the society and politics. The price of destroying the middle class will be worth it to them. Canada talks a big game, but I'm not sure they know what they are up against.

What is needed is a recognition of what is going on. Trump is just the front man of the problem. This is about returning to feudalism, with lords and subjects, masters and slaves, whatever their titles may be. The world has changed. We cannot go back no matter how much they want to, because it will not be civilization, it will be barbarism. This war can only be won by recognition of what it is. The great private powers of wealth must be brought to heal, or they will enslave all... before they start fighting among themselves as kings always do.

David's avatar

Mikey, which means trat this is not going to be settled peacefully. It is time to target these wealthy Barbarians. We all know who has made this possible,Wall Street, financial institutions that 100% support Trump and his degulatory state. If only we could get a tiny fraction of the population to boycott, but it is too inconvenient to boycott.Again the far right,Project 2025 know americans are pushovers for an aggressive " Nazi" party. When americans and all the Dems get some guts, something may change.

MikeyB's avatar

Americans my be easy going and have lived a bit soft, but they are nobody's push over. I don't think this will work. really, it's FIFO time. Maga put him in and I think enough of them are going to figure it out how much pain he's causing and then he will be out.

Joan Halgren's avatar

Why?

Carney overlooks that America became prominent by applying many of the ideas he mentions, in his speech, to help Canada and other nations today. Also, "veriable geometry" is nonsense. What we really need is inclusive geometry.

People forget, including our global leaders, during heated moments, that we are facing an enormous global climate emergency. So instead of talking 20th century ideas, we need to be facing 21 century matters with total coherence among nations. Plus, we need the sharing of finite resources for humanity (not competition for them) and other life forms to even survive. Also, we are not in a "rupture". We are facing a severe environmental condition, wherein we either transform our thinking to even higher principles and actions or we dissolve--scientist are mostly in agreement.

Russell John Netto's avatar

But there clearly isn't total coherence amongst nations and that's why Carney's proposed 'variable geometry' in international relations has always been necessary as a pragmatic solution to this problem. It's why Canada has formed a strategic partnership with China and why the UK is also taking a similar approach. There has always been a need for nations to form partnerships and alliances of the willing to tackle problems they cannot solve alone. Trump, and others, want to dissolve these multinational alliances to allow them to pursue their own selfish interests unhindered by the normal constraints of international law and the treaties between nations. It's why Trump has withdrawn the US from 66 such associations, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/12/trump-un-climate-treaty-unfccc

Trump is bucking the trend on energy by turning his back on renewables which provided 90% of new energy supplied in 2025. In doing so, he's allowed China to lead the world on renewables and denied Americans the cheapest forms of electricity currently available.

Joan Halgren's avatar

Russell John Netto, with all respect, being pragmatic with 'variable geometry' is incrementalism that doesn't resolve our worldwide social/climate crisis. It's tinkering around the edges. Alliances of the willing are okay only to a point--since they are transactional; thus, they can easily fall apart.

I have studied and am accredited in sustainability. Also, I have learned from

international development leaders, like Dr. Jean Houston, and scientists, like Annelose Smitsman, about what our world truly needs. Indeed, DJT's approach is destructive, and should be ignored. However, conventional ideas developed in the 20th century won't save us from ultimate self destruction, unless, we 'truly become coherent'--not having our separate kingdoms but collaborating as one planet that we are!

As for renewable energy, of course, DJT is on the wrong side of history that is accelerating our demise. I know the sickening story well. But we cannot fantasize that Carney's speech is somehow a revelation. We must do even better than just finding splintered areas around the globe to bring us satisfaction--be it a contract with China or whatever. We must finally realize we are one living on this gorgeous blue marble called Earth and we don't own the space we live on but borrrow it for a lifespan. If we cannot grasp this notion--we will be lost. Nature knows best we are deeply connected with her and each other too--we are not separate with our little policy plans and nation states. Let's transform to something better.

It's possible to own guns here in Canada, it's just that you can't own an automatic weapon and you do have to go through a course about gun use and ownership. If that's a problem, then of course you better stay where you can get mowed down by a gun at any moment.

Pamela's avatar

I just read a report where they, too, are limiting their immigration. The poor Indians who have immigrated there are experiencing a lot of discrimination. The Canadians are fed up with segments of immigration policies. Apparently they are having a housing and cost crisis too.

Catherine Beck's avatar

We have had a massive housing affordability and housing availability crisis. Not only was Canada accepting great numbers of immigrants and refugees each year, but also vast numbers of students from other countries. That's all good! We like people who want to contribute.

Except developers were only building splendid homes and landlords were wholesale "reno-victing" - kicking tenents out, renovating to some degree and jacking up rents way beyond the rise in wages and salaries.

Housing costs were sinking many people's lives. This endured for 5-7 years or more. Carney instituted some changes. Canada cut back on the number of overseas students it can accept. Companies now can access funds to build modular homes that ordinary people can afford. Cities changed zoning bylaws to encourage more density.

Some Canadians, e.g. Maple MAGA, don't want immigrants. Most Canadians do. As the housing crisis mitigates over the next 3-5 years, I hope Canada will carefully return to its former immigration numbers.

Pamela's avatar

I was unaware of all of this. It seems there are a lot of parallels to the US situation and Canada's. Canada seemed poised to lean right prior to Trump's crazy tactics. I think the Canadians woke up when they saw that. What seems apparent to me is that most of these problems stem from the hoarding of resources by the wealthy. It seems to be true worldwide. I guess it is the age-old devil's tool of greed. Pure and simple.

Ron's avatar

You should read the new Oxfam report "Resisting the Rule of the Rich." It shows that the rise of a large number of multi-billionaires in countries around the world has a truly corrosive impact on democracy. Here is a link to the Executive Summary: https://oi-files-d8-prod.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/2026-01/EN%20-%20Resisting%20the%20Rule%20of%20the%20Rich.pdf.

Pamela's avatar

I read the report. Very interesting. Just as I thought. The world is at a crossroad.

Pamela's avatar

Thank you. I will definitely read it. I can't right now, but I will get back to you.

Betty's avatar

Yes, we in Canada are not free of discrimination. The difference is, that most Canadians I have discussed immigration with felt, the immigrants themselves were not recognized as the problem. It was the lack of funding and programs to assist with the issues of moving to a new country were not available and we were therefore setting them up for failure. In a supply and demand economy we couldn't supply what was necessary with the increased demand. Either we fund what is necessary or we limit immigration to sustainable levels. That is not what I feel is happening in the US.

Pamela's avatar
20hEdited

The parallels are largely income inequality. Yes, there are large differences. Our country has been hijacked by the billionaires and ideologies that are still circulating worldwide since WWII. There are shadows of it in Europe right now also. The ugly is raising its head again. Just beware if your SC or whatever mechanism you have. If they start allowing dark money to fund your political discourse, WATCH OUT. Of course that isn't the only indicator, but without that SC decision (Citizens United), we wouldn't be here, providing many other things remained intact. It is very complicated. For the US, this is an extreme crisis. Too bad we don't have any allies left to come to our rescue.

Catherine Beck's avatar

In Canada, we have no equivalent to Citizens United. That type of funding for political campaigns is not allowed. Their are ceilings for the amount of money a company can donate to a campaign. Still, some people try to game the system...but NEVER to the extent we see in the US.

The influence on government of the very wealthy, however, still occurs. Many of the people elected to Parliament are lawyers. Overall, MPs are wealthy compared with most Canadians. And Ministers and Members of Parliament are continually and frequently lobbied by big businesses - while reps from civil society organizations have much more difficulty getting a meeting...or getting any action.

What a large chunk of Canadians want is voting by proportional representation. That way, everyone's vote actually counts. versions of that system work in Ireland, Netherlands and elsewhere.

Alfhard's avatar

You did not mention that - unlike in the USA - corporations are not allowed to make any political contributions. Also, Elections Canada, which draws the boundaries to ridings, is truly independent, so gerrymandering is not an issue in Canada. Yes, proportional representation would be a vast improvement over the present system.

David's avatar

Thanks Catherine, great commentary on how the Canadian system works. It would never work here, the system is just to corrupt and will always be corrupt and working for just a small fraction of the people.

Pamela's avatar

No judgement on the typo. Interesting points. Yes, the money influence is an age-old problem in many cultures. Our Supreme Court allowed this to happen and it has had monumental detrimental effects as evidenced by what we are now seeing. He is an aberration. Citizens United was unleashed on America in 2010. It took 16 years to evolve to the moral decay and the hostile take-over we are witnessing.

Sally Rhodes's avatar
