When I—having whistleblown about corruption in Zimbabwe’s banks— did not allow myself to be intimidated by Mugabe’s ‘secret police’ (who disappeared people), I could do it only because I had unshakeable faith. I believed unequivocally that I was doing the right thing, and that God protects the righteous. And yes, I was protected—no physical harm came to me. But the psychological impact was still profound; I struggled to even speak about it until recent days.

But I had no support network, not one person beside me. So I would say 2 things:

1. If you’re not going to back down, draw people around you. Act as a member of a group, if possible— not because action can’t/ won’t be taken against a group, but because you will always—always!—have one another for support. The bonds that are forged in such a situation are never broken. And if you can’t act as a member of a group, draw your family and close friends near. Make sure they understand why you feel you need to act, and bring them alongside. Standing up to tyranny if your family is against it is an impossible situation to be in, especially if you don’t have faith.

2. If you are a person of faith, build it. For me that was repeating scriptures like, ‘If God is for me, who can be against me?’ Find the ones that speak to you, and repeat them to yourself. They will give you solace through the darkest times.

I wish I could do something more for you.

Octogenarians Unite! You have the experience that few other groups can call on. Your family endured the horrors of WWII. You saw students gunned down for protesting. You saw or perhaps were beaten bloody for peacefully protesting apartheid in South Africa and here in the American South. You and your friends were sent to Vietnam to fight an unjust war. You lost friends and brothers in that war. You saw a President declare he was not a criminal because if a President does it, it is not illegal. Then you saw him resign in order to avoid impeachment and conviction. Against all odds, you are still here. So rise up, gather your friends, use your influence, stop the insanity now accelerating in Washington DC. Rich S, Octogenarian, Contrarian and tired of the spineless "representatives"
