The first to topple!!

Evie Weinstein-Park's avatar

And hopefully not the last!! Such great news!!!

Judson MacLaury's avatar

Crowds were reportedly chanting, Russians out! Russians out! This hearkens back to 1956.

chris lemon's avatar

They can reuse that chant in the US too. In Hungarian no less!

Make Authoritarians Go Away! MAGA!

Judith Wynn's avatar

A more simple chant: YOU'RE FIRED.

Judson MacLaury's avatar

To be used at the celebrations after a Blue Wave has (hopefully) swept the Republican Party from power. To be amended thus: Hey Boss, You're Fired!

milbank's avatar

I prefer the simple, but more ironic, LOCK HIM UP!

Judith Wynn's avatar

Ironic. But hopefully with literal results.

milbank's avatar

I sure hope we have better results than they did with Hillary.

Mmerose's avatar

I saw that clip on Meidas, and in the background was a giant screen image of Orban kissing Putin! Let's see billboards across America of a big Trump/Putin kiss, and some Trump/Netanyahu big smakeroons, too!

chris lemon's avatar

Its not their lips that Trump will be kissing.

Mmerose's avatar

Wasn't there something in 1968, too: Russian tanks in Budapest? I was a teenage tourist in Paris for "Liberation from Hitler" Day memorial, but Paris was unsettled. Europe is small: only 700 miles Paris to Budapest, or so. I wish my memory was better, but there was a sense of friends and family not far across not usually very problematic borders. God Bless the scrappy Hungarians!

Carol Shetler's avatar

1968 was the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia. Vaclav Havel, a statesman and poet, took a large role in the protests, and eventually became President of Czechoslovakia from 1989 until 1992, when it broke into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in the Velvet Revolution.

Dick Montagne's avatar

I’m not sure about the tanks, but wasn’t that the time that “The Incredible Lightness of Being” was released. “Take off your clothes, I’m a Doctor” or something very close to it was a key phrase.

Russell Bixby's avatar

Not my favourite new year, but that was an exception.

Merrill's avatar

Ignore the Bombast bloviator. When you see or hear his miserable excuse for "words" follow Melania's advice "I don't care. Do you?"

Praise the Hungarians. Believe the Pope's Message of Peace and caring for the less fortunate than us. Find a candidate you like and support them through Nov. Bring your friends. Save the America we love.

Richard Ferrell's avatar

Yes, I immediately thought of 1956. I was 13 years old then.

Mary Roeser's avatar

Me, too. I was 13, too.

pts's avatar

The Tisza voters just did what we have to do in November: vote and take back Congress with such huge numbers that no amount of right-wing fuckery can deny, lie, or cheat its way out of the results. Make the outcome, as Orban himself put it, "unambiguous."

Congratulations to the long-suffering Hungarian people. Now let every one of us pledge not only just to vote in November but also to get at least three other people to vote as well, and to vote for candidates committed to stopping the present régime in its tracks, clearing out the corruption and systemic rot, and getting on posthaste with the comprehensive, transformational rebuild that will result in America 2.0.

Jill Stoner's avatar

Truly a landslide. We can do it too!

Merrill's avatar

I think that's a good idea the Democrats should take up - 3 more votes for democracy for every one, ike you, who also votes Democrat!

Russell Bixby's avatar

Let's hope that he is only the first of a great many McNamara-esque dominos.

Betty Amstutz Gerson's avatar

BUT Trump can use Orban as an example of one thing: ACCEPTING the results of a free and fair election. This is very good news. In the end Orban's illiberal democracy was a democracy.

Joyce T. SMITH's avatar

Not to mention shtler🤮☠️💩☠️🤮esque

Timothy Cooper's avatar

Orban's fall will hopefully encourage other populations under the thumb of a despot to resist and change their future. Very encouraging

And, more to come, Ginny K!

Mary Ann Dimand's avatar

I am so thrilled about this-- may he slink away, perhaps disembarrassed of some material gains, and may the lands and prospects of Hungary brighten.

Tracy Zaiss's avatar

Orban did something Trump should take a lesson from - he conceded.

MikeyB's avatar

There is going to be fire on Truth Social tonight.

Jill Stoner's avatar

Perhaps. Or Trump will merely say: "Victor--I never really liked the guy."

Anon's avatar

Jill - Or “I know nothing about it and don’t even know the guy.” ;)

steve reed's avatar

Yeah trump doesn't like losers.

chris lemon's avatar

Trump's going to rename it

правда социальная. (pravda sotsial'naya)

As a distraction.

Anon's avatar

chris - Maybe not. Have you heard him try to say the word acetaminophen? It basically shut him down. I doubt he has it in him say what you recommended but I sure wouldn’t mind hearing him try. ;)

Klare K.'s avatar

Chris, translated, what does that mean?

chris lemon's avatar

Truth Social, in Russian.

Martin Mayland's avatar

He's too conceited.

J L Graham's avatar

That he should, though I think he is emotionally incapable of it.

" 'You've got to deny, deny, deny and push back on these women,' Trump said, according to Woodward. 'If you admit to anything and any culpability, then you're dead. That was a big mistake you made.'

Trump said the key was showing no hesitancy in denying accusations and instead, be on the attack and push back.

'You didn't come out guns blazing and just challenge them. You showed weakness,' Trump told the friend, according to Woodward. 'You've got to be strong. You've got to be aggressive. You've got to push back hard. You've got to deny anything that's said about you. Never admit. ' "

Such an important win for democracy worldwide! Congratulations Hungary!

Carol Taylor Boyd's avatar

Congratulations Hungary!!! Wishing your people all the best!

Gloria Picchetti's avatar

Vance went there and he still lost!

Suzy Fraser's avatar

With the US being so dimly viewed by sane people around the world, sending Vance to Hungary pretty much guaranteed that Orban would not be elected. We need to keep sending Vance out! :)

Richard Knabel's avatar

And hope he doesn’t come back.

David Dilling's avatar

Send Vance out! Send Vance out!

Klare K.'s avatar

Suzy, my thinking exactly!

Victor's avatar

maybe he lost because of Vance. Hungarian Catholics know he is a fraud.

progwoman's avatar

Don't give Vance too much credit. I think he read the situation wrong, and we should remember that.

J L Graham's avatar

He gets credit as a liability.

Jan Moon's avatar

Don't forget Vance went to visit Pope Francis and he died. At least Viktor is still alive. So far.

Elene Gusch's avatar

But Vance lowered his chances by a few percentage points.

Being Trump's friend is getting to be the kiss of death (figuratively of course) for European politicians.

Anon's avatar

Jan - Vance shows his true Catholic-ness as he continues to allow his boss to trash the current Pope. I’m not even religious but I still respect what the Pope has been saying.

J L Graham's avatar

Same side of The Force.

Frank Fulton's avatar

Vance visiting Hungary guaranteed Orbans loss. Vance is the anti-Christ. If you want people to run away screaming in terror, bring out Vance.

J L Graham's avatar

The Trump Regime is is Antichrist Inc.

Anon's avatar

Frank - While I believe you it’s a shame that they didn’t run away in the last election.

Lisa Botwinick's avatar

I don't believe Vance will be liked as a MAGA candidate for President in 2028! He's been a failure as a VP!

Laurie Blair's avatar

As a Person, period. Don't forget that Peter Theil educated and installed him.

Therese Wilson's avatar

Vance is certainly a failure as a Catholic! But also as a human being! How can his wife even STAND him?

Laurie Blair's avatar

Most likely she has no choice.

GabrielM's avatar

Vance's visit might have helped him to lose...

Daniel H Laemmerhirt's avatar

That's the thing: ZERO people, possibly even his family, take JP Mande-JD Vance seriously. He's a joke to BOTH sides of the aisle in America.

Stephen Brady's avatar

Looks like his endorsement is particularly revolting. Maybe tRump will have the ‘big one’… of course then we are stuck with the couch molester.

Lucia Kasulis's avatar

Better a piece of furniture than a human!

Alfhard's avatar

I think Vance contrbuted to Orban's loss

Therese Wilson's avatar

Vance is completely ineffective at everything he does. He's an idiot! Along with the other MAGA idiots. And Jared Kushner and RUMP's real estate buddy--they should have just gone to Islamabad and said the truth, which is, "How can Iran's problems benefit ME?" ME, ME, ME! That's what RUMP and his lackies are all about--lining their own pockets and screw America!

David Dilling's avatar

Maybe it’s Vance went there and he ensured a loss.

Laurie Blair's avatar

Vance is poison to a 'Democrat' Victory, in any case. He accused his own constituents of eating cats and dogs, just because of their race. Long live the Hungarian People!

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Thank you people of Hungary for showing us a way out of insanity, greed, fake anger on the part of rich white men, and more!

PJ's avatar

Yes, we can use their 'playbook' and study their example!

Gloria's avatar

Takes guts, determination & realizing PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER

Mary de Ridder's avatar

It is important to remember that Orban controlled the media, the justice system and of course the civil service. And yet the Hungarians rose up and voted him out. The winner is a Conservative Party. Not far right wing like his predecessor.

The People decided to oust Orban. By word of mouth. In Europe we don’t have a choice of two - right and left. Conservative parties are often more similar to the Democrats.

So called social democrats are left of the middle and then you have the real Leftists who support Moscow and a type of Communist state.

There is a lot of choice on both sides of the middle.

Daniel H Laemmerhirt's avatar

They're a better people than us dumb, redneck 'Muricans is the lesson here. God bless you, Hungarian world heroes!!!

Gloria's avatar

YERS, so proud of you, Hungary !!!

Paula's avatar

I'm so glad he conceded. Trump will say he's "such a loser" for doing that.

Laurie Blair's avatar

Yes, it takes one to know one.

This is such awesome and hope filled news. It’s a blessing and I hope bodes well for the future of the US and the world. 🌎

Marvin Carnow's avatar

Trump must be soiling his pants, knowing he is next.

MikeyB's avatar

He's gonna fire up on Truth Social tonight... if he's not weeping.

Robert's avatar

I'm sure that the soil comes straight out of his soul.

Todd Heller's avatar

Your comment is pure BS. Trump cannot be "next" as he cannot run again.

And even if we don't want Vance to become President, if us Democrats are stupid & select AOC or Kamala Harris in 2028 he could very easily win. We need a moderate, reasonable candidate like Rahm Emanuel or Whitmer or Kelly. Or Kubachar.

Marvin Carnow's avatar

I was alluding to him being impeached along with JD and convicted. Next, meaning out of office. Sorry, not BS.

Lisa Botwinick's avatar

We need someone to really make some changes! People like Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer don't make the cut in my book! AOC needs to be a Senator first. She can replace Schumer!

Daniel H Laemmerhirt's avatar

No no, you don't understand: Americans need to IMPEACH, CONICT and either IMPRISON or EXECUTE Bunkerboy! . . . Well, that or hopefully this news will do what the 75 McDonald's berders a day can't.

Klare K.'s avatar

It's Klobachar, y'all, get a Congressional Directory and use it!

Gregg Scott's avatar

HEH! HEH! HEH! Thank you.

Robert's avatar

Speak for yourself, there Klare.

„Klobuchar”, pronounced „Clawbitcher”.

A woman has never been President. Only one black has been President.

These are not normal times. The first criteria for a nominee beyond all else is the liklihood of winning for the Dems. I believe a populist campaign framed correctly can win big, but you have to appeal to independents and others. If you do it right many voters will see the nominee as a change candidate but not "extreme" (whatever that means to voters). And our candidate must speak directly and from the heart. Come across as authentic and for the working classes, but not just the working classes. A certain amount of ambiguity is good. If people have an overall favorable impression of a candidate they can fill in some of the policy gaps with their hopes. Best not to be too specific as people will latch onto what they hear as negatives.

Robert's avatar

> A woman has never been President.

Jimmy Carter

> Only one black has been President.

Two, actually. Bill Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama. The latter gets a twofer, as the first Muslim President (according to THEIR rules).

Robert's avatar

If Kelly’s not a “konvicted felon” by then ….

But there are NO “moderate, reasonable” Demshevik candidates. They’re all a bunch of Klares. Look at the way you guys treat John Fetterman.

Klare K.'s avatar

What the FUCK IS A "KLARE", FUCKHEAD ROBERT???

Robert's avatar

> What the FUCK IS A "KLARE", FUCKHEAD ROBERT???

I love the lack of self-awareness there, Klare.

She’s a lunatic, violence-prone, ignorant Antifa Innsmouth Insurrectionist with unblinking bulging eyes, flopping and hopping as glimpsed by the narrator of SoI, actually one of the tadpoles-with-legs of the Cthulhu/Yog-Soros spawn, emerging from Devil Reef.

Oh, and when HPL concluded The Festival with “things have “leared” to walk that ought to crawl [on their elbows]” he was clearly predicting Klares, and, by extension, the Demshevik Party.

Seneca Lapham, Henry Armitage, or Laban Shrewsbury need to shove her back into the black hole, and seal it forever.

Might be worth an extra chapter in August Derleth’s The Trail of Cthulhu….

Klare K.'s avatar

Robert, your in-depth interest in the seriously obscure literature of the world makes you an utter bore. It's too bad for your sake that you weren't blessed with more exciting and lively interests. In the meantime, stop using my name in any way!

Robert's avatar

„your in-depth interest in the seriously obscure literature of the world”

Oh, come, come Klare. Without H.P. Lovecraft there’s no American literature (I really did get away with opening a conference presentation that way, btw).

„In the meantime, stop using my name in any way!”

Too late! It’s escaped!

Brian C.'s avatar

My wife and children are dual US-Hungarian nationals. They all voted for Tisza last week by absentee ballot. As she so eloquently said after the results, "I'm proud to be Hungarian today."

Anon's avatar

Brian - I’m half Irish and half Hungarian and I am definitely smiling big right now. Kinda feels weird because I haven’t used those muscles in a while. ;)

Dear JD

Please endorse all the fascists in the world. Visit their countries and take photos with them for extra measure.

Love, Grateful Americans

Klare K.'s avatar

Dee, ha, ha! Too funny!

Dee S.'s avatar

I bet many Americans saw those happy pictures of Vance and Orban together before the elections and thought “kiss of death, buddy.”

Dee S.'s avatar

And soon, Goodbye Vance.

Stephen Kaufman's avatar

Israel should be added to your list of forces of authoritarianism.

David Kleinberg-Levin's avatar

Israel needs to get rid of wishfully authoritarian Netanyahu; Iran needs to get rid of authoritarian rule by Islamic extremists; and we here in America need to get rid of criminal authoritarian Trump. The people CAN win! Hungary proves the point!

Robert's avatar

“Iran needs to get rid of authoritarian rule by Islamic extremists”. How?

T_Allen's avatar

Over the course of time the Iranian people will take care of this themselves. Just not on an American time table. If Trump didn't make this all about himself, a lot more people would still be alive and Iran would still be on course. Trump is incapable of doing anything for others that doesn't benefit himself.

Katharine English's avatar

Hoping this is just the first salvo we need to right our own sinking ship.
